Think of it as a substitute for punctuation. Where a period / full stop would sound terse, a line break provides more of a pause than a comma but not as big a pause as a period. It makes a post seem more casual.

It can also be used for comedic effect, putting a punchline well below the actual post, where it will only be seen after some scrolling.

The only good thing about FYAD is the occasionally funny usernames. That's about it.
