Hello wonderful /jp/.

I've been teaching myself Japanese for a few months now. I have a friend that went on a year-long exchange program and in talking to him, I extracted that the language gets learned like ten times as fast in Japan itself.

So, I want to go there. I'm too old for the high school based exchange he's on. I've been looking everywhere and asking many people. I turn to you in what are my some of my final efforts. How would I be able to go on a one year exchange to learn the language in Japan?

Thank you.

>> No.8117958

Wrong board for this, try /lang/. In hopes that you delete your shitty thread, Japanese isn't a very hard language to learn, you should have already grasped everything but kanji if you've been spending your time efficiently. Being surrounded by signs you can't read won't help you learn any faster. You could try a JET program if you have a degree, but without actual skills you won't be able to get a job in a xenophobic country like Japan for a year.

>> No.8117959

You could try WWOOF.
If you like to be driven like a slave while working on a farm.
But hey, at least it's slave work in japan, amirite?

My mom has a coworker that is going to Japan to teach English, and she said that if I wanted to go with to let her know. I don't know her living arrangements but I'm assuming they're being paid for so I would basically be piggybacking. I've never even met this woman before, but that seems like an awfully generous invitation to make, doesn't it? I'm probably overthinking this. She was probably joking. My mom keeps telling me though so I'm not sure. I'm not doing anything with my life right now and it's fun to toy around with the idea.

Like I said, it's most likely some kind of joke. My parents always joke around with me with stuff like this. The fact that my mother keeps telling me about it makes me wonder though.

I can cook and wouldn't have a problem doing cleaning, but that's really all I have to offer. I have no passport either. I literally have only one hundred US dollars to my name and that's going to be gone soon due to a preorder I placed a while back. Unless I sold my car I wouldn't even have any way to get a ticket (which I'm assuming I would pay).

Maybe I should just ask if she's serious or not. I can always get an emergency job if I decide that I really want to go.

There are many bars where western and japanese ppl go out together, very easy to find some new friends or new ppl to talk with.

expect hell if you join a language school as a teacher. shit hours, shit pay, shit everything. expect to be overworked. if you're going in legit with a work visa you need a BA. if you're not, you just need to be in the country (tourist visa) but if you overstay it you're going to be in trouble if anyone finds out. another risk to working without a work visa is that some of the more unscrupulous types can take advantage of you and there isn't much you can do legally about it
