Astrid made Pamela a body/doll to inhabit so that she has a 'physical' body in the world, rather than being a ghost all the time.

For now, appreciate the fact that you know that she's a ghost, but everyone else in Totori's village doesn't.

>>8120390
Gust uses the various sub-series as a way to explore and experiment with various ideas and features as well as focus on the games. That lets them actually experiment and at the same time be unrestricted by having to implement or incorporate previous designs that can add up a lot of baggage.

In any case, The Atelier Iris and subsequently Mana Khemia series are adventure and combat focused. The Iris were an attempt to be more of a traditional RPG rather than being a strictly Item Synthesis RPG. Iris and Mana Khemia are great games to settle into the notion that item synthesis and use are very important, but be able to have something else to work on. Rorona is a hardcore step back into the management and schedule heavy pressure of the earlier series and has an extremely simplistic but functional combat system. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for those who really like the idea of trying to tweak item synthesis to get specific results, it's good. Totori is more adventure oriented, but the combat system is still a work in progress and there is a risk of being overwhelmed as you have no hand holding on what you should focus on.

While that is true, the alchemy system actually seems more worth experimenting with in Mana Khemia and Ar Tonelico 1-2. Why? because most of the effects don't matter in Rorona/Totori due to the simple combat and weapon system. In Totori you hardly ever have to get a specific trait.

I actually liked the micro management in Rorona, they just could've made the combat a bit less mind numbing.

The sub-series are for all intents and purposes, totally separate from each other. The games within a sub-series are normally direct sequels/prequels but that isn't necessarily a rule in itself. I'm not certain if the three Iris games are connected in any way other than being similar gameplay focus.

The only things that are common are similar item synthesis (Supplements, Zettel etc...) some common enemies such as Punis and of course, Pamela and Hagel. Almost standard franchise commonality conventions really.

Totori does have DLC packs which let you change the battle/atelier BGMs to ones from the earlier Atelier games (Nefertiti, fuck yeah!) which can be great for the nostalgia trips and just enjoying the earlier musics.

The most enjoyable skits out of the AT1 heroines.

The best character design in the franchise. Actually, I'd go so far as to say that when I think of a videogame character who's "pretty", Shurelia is probably the first that comes to mind.

She had inconsistencies, but I remember her more for the good than the bad.

>> No.8129740

I actually agree with this, oddly enough. I didn't much for Shurelia at all when I played the game, but in retrospect I view her as one of the better girls in the series. Maybe I've just involuntarily glossed over the shitty parts.

>> No.8129767

>>8129740

I started liking Shurelia pretty quickly after she joined and I started watching skits. When I finished AT1, my solid ranking was Shurelia > Aurica > Misha.

I just initially hesitated to put her on par with my other favorites in the franchise. (played AT1 last)

I've grown to like Aurica more, too. She's one of the few things about the game that didn't really seem to suffer from any sort of bad writing. If anything, she's a rare example of a depressed, withdrawn, self-loathing chick made me feel sympathy for her. Its obvious that she's where the writers were focusing.

Misha... not so much. I really wanted to like Misha, but the writing surrounding her was the worst that the game had to offer. There was no connection between her and Lyner, and her character just came out feeling weak all around in the end. So much for "second reyvateil is always best".

>> No.8130352

Objectively speaking, I think Aurica was the best in the series in terms of character development. You can really see the difference between the annoying wet blanket Aurica you first meet, to the funny, wacky Aurica she becomes by the end. If you listen closely, her battle dialogue changes progressively as the game goes on from a "I don't want to do this..." to "ALRIGHT LETS DO THIS!".

And then you have Tokousphere Aurica where she is all sorts of crazy, non-canon notwithstanding.

10/10 on the part of the writers, wish they had put as much effort into Misha's writing but hey, guess who's on the cover of the game?

>but the writing surrounding her was the worst that the game had to offer. There was no connection between her and Lyner
When people here kept repeating how much of an idiot Lyner was, I had no idea what they were talking about until I started to play Misha's route. I mean, he was playing disinterested in the innuendo but he had decent plans and leadership qualities. Honestly, Misha's route makes everyone look horrible.

I maintain that there is a connection between Misha and Lyner, but it doesn't really develop, so much as become revealed. My personal gripe with her is that her cosmosphere resolves itself. With Aurica, Lyner becomes the cause of her inner conflict and he resolves it by personally reaching out to accept all parts of her. With Misha, Hama swoops in at the last moment.

That said, I think that Misha is still better written than anything I've seen out of AT2's phase 1-3 so far. At least romantically. AT1 has an air of coziness about it with all of the heroines. AT2's talk topics are too short, its heroines don't open up their Cosmospheres until you commit to them (and you only really get 4 short levels to see their surface issues), and its crafting topics are more about the RT's relations with other people. They barely talk to you when you take their route and then they get pulled out of your party for an entire phase, and when they finally come back they are raging lesbians. AT1 had dozens of subtle little touches that make you feel closer to your choice.

Lyner never seemed to care much for Misha, at least not up until the very last second where you choose her over Shurelia, at the very end. It was too late and too sudden. It never had a chance to go anywhere. And he downright treats her like shit throughout Act 3.

Croix at least seems like he enjoys the company of all of the girls.

I would kind of agree with AT1's and AT3's synthesis skits seeming a little more "personal", though. The shop keepers (awesome as Skycat and Cynthia were) cut in a lot.

I have no idea what you're talking about with any of the AT2 heroines being pushed aside, ever. Both Cloche and Luca remain relevant throughout, as does Jacqli once she joins up.

>comsospheres

AT2's cosmospheres were fucking intense later on, though. That's when they got good. I played AT2 first, and was disappointed that the others didn't reach the level of intensity.

For AT3's cosmospheres, Saki's kinda sucked, but Finnel's had its moments (and fuck yeah, Soma), and Tyria's was a nice little side story.

I really didn't like AT1's cosmospheres very much. The mind guardians here were the most memorable of the lot, but beyond that... they were just underwhelming.

>I was happy enough maxing out def and all the resistances

With one grathnode, you can max out all the stats aside from hp, attack, defense, and agility. Sadly, once you get to phase 3, there are no enemies worth mentioning that even use elemental attacks.

Otherwise, my Radolf is the only char that can legitimately solo any boss monster. A few auto-regen crystals and two diamond defenses mean that his auto-regen out-heals Mir's damage. Hell, it can out heal 3 mir's attacking him. Seriously. He also has enough damage to barely out-do mir's auto healing...but the fight takes a while.

If you're still having trouble with mir,
another thing to do is to use the genuine IO's to have all your craftables to S-rank, and then make a few S-rank high end equipments, which can then be grathnoded into the overpowered S-rank grathnodes that you can only otherwise find from Spica.
Lastly, you can farm the relics from the random fights near the child of light, and then turn those into special grades.

At that point, there should be no way in fucking hell that you should ever have any trouble with anything.

>Especially AT3. Aoto played off of the girls really well. The hidden option in Finnel's ending was DAAAAWWWWW.

Yeah, AT3 was the best in the MC-heroine relationship department. AT1's problem was that since you could max out all CSes and the choice of which girl you end up with is literally at the last minute they had their hands tied as to what they could do in those scenes, while AT2's problem was that Croix's relationships with the heroines (as well as Croix himself) becomes completely irrelevant to the main story after he gets them to the point where they stop hating each other.

I think if Lyner had openly assured her that it was only temporary to say goodbye or come up with Plan C then it would have come out better.

Things like Lyner expressing his eternal gratitude and complete devotion at the end of Phase 2, and the stuff written in the characters status screen only made it so much worse. As far as maxing out more than one girl, AT1 didn't bother me in that regard because the Cosmosphere marriage was symbolic. If the Talk Topic acquisition wasn't so squirrelly at times they could have tied it in with that, since you can only max one girl per playthrough.

Barring that, they either needed to bring in Shurelia's branch earlier or at the very least not have her intrude once you finally pick the other girl's ending.

Overall, I think that a harem end where you strongly and clearly favor one of the girls would have been the best there.

While that is the most logical I believe it's not possible due to the fact that the song must be maintained for a set number of hours at a time in order for the seal to keep its strength so by constantly switching out people the seal would slowly allow Mir to break out. There's also more technical stuff to keep in mind like each reyvateil having different levels of strength (depending on their age) which means the seal would fluctuate. There's also development costs to keep in mind.

It's been a while since I read up on that stuff, but aside from there being one Chronicle Key (the hymn crystal can only be installed in one RT at the same time), wasn't there also something about the star singer using the first Lune's D-Cellophan as some sort of requirement for the hymn?

Oh I don't believe he was dense (at least in this regard), he was just playing dumb most of the time, the way I saw it. I thought he didn't want to be bothered by all this relationship stuff and whatnot. The only moment where his true feelings/thoughts/character shone through was, if I remember correctly, in Misha's cosmosphere where he said something along the lines of "Sorry, but I won't be bound by anyone" (unless of course he really was completely dense and meant that strictly literally, and I read too much into it).

Which is why I was so confused by his few sudden outbursts of emotion and supposed 'care'. It's like the writing for this character was inconsistent.

Regarding Misha's situation, he also wasn't oblivious to that. There's a time in the game where you begin to realise that Misha will have to go back to that room and stay there forever, and yet no one ever says anything about it, not even Jack - until finally Lyner, of all people, tells her he's sorry that he can't help her escape that fate somehow.

>> No.8133015

The song itself is inserted into their D-Cellophane and only a descendant/clone of Lune would be able to sing Chronicle Key.

>>8132483

I think 'treating her like shit during phase 3' is mainly due to Lyner growing up and having more respect for Shurelia, which is completely understandable when you consider that she's an administrator and she was also very close with Lyner and his father when he was growing up. It was a shitty move to ask Misha to sing again but unfortunately that's her role as a Star Singer. Lyner could have certainly handled the situation a lot better but that's just him being dense.

As for the lack of emotion towards the girls you have to remember that the game never truly locked you into a girl and apart from which story route you take the game doesn't really know who you really like. You could max out all of the cosmosphere's so it's kind of hard for them to put emotion towards the girls. This is why AT2 has you locked into a reyvateil when you go past level 5 and the other two accept that. The last second decision in AT1 is a pretty dick move though, I have to admit, but it was the only way for the game to know who you actually chose.

Yeah, pretty much. They were kind of forced into that by the fact that Shurelia joins the party so late, though, if she had joined at the start of phase 2 they could have had you lock someone in by phase 3.

AT3 had a slightly better solution to the "third girl joins 2/3 of the way through" dilemma by giving you the option to lock a girl in before Tyria even joins or friendzoning them until later. Though having some of the two-point scenes happen and then going Tyria or Cocona could be a little awkward.

Overall I don't think any of the games did as good a job as they could have integrating CS progress/girl choice with the main story. It wouldn't have been to hard to, for example, have certain bits of main story dialogue play out differently if you had seen certain CS scenes/talk topics, or if you had committed to a girl by that point in the story (such as the bonus scene in 3's phase 3 if you had 3-pointed a girl, which is basically the only example of this happening in the series outside of the endings.)

Obviously.

Unless you somehow magically guess exactly when you should clear a cosmosphere level, there's always going to be inconsistencies between what's going on inside the cosmosphere and what's going on outside.

1. Characters that the heroine hasn't met yet will show up inside her cosmosphere.

2. The protagonist will witness a revelation inside the cosmosphere, but when its brought up outside, he won't know anything.

3. The protagonist will learn something outside, but when he sees it inside the cosmosphere, he'll act as if he doesn't know.

4. Character changes that take place inside the cosmosphere are meaningless everywhere else.

5. Character changes that take place outside the comsosphere do not always reflect inside, especially if you've waited a long time to complete a level.

They're like two completely different universes that have no impact on one another, except for rare instances.

>> No.8135192

Which is the reason why AT2 at the very least had conditions on when talk matters will unlock and hence when a Cosmosphere scenario is allowed to be accessed.

Not only does that impose a 'level cap' for song magic for the sake of game play, it also synch locks the cosmosphere with the actual main storyline so that certain revelations and scenarios won't occur before they are meant to occur. There is one slight mess up from memory which was a minor spoiler with Cloche.

AT1 was a total mess because it didn't lock off access to the higher cosmosphere levels based off the story progression, which meant weird things such as you've mentioned, NPCs that haven't appeared yet and even Adult Misha before that major spoiler is released.

AT2 has its fair share of those exact same problems. It doesn't have AS MANY, but the ones that are there are significantly worse. Two examples from recent memory:

If you finish stage 5 and choose to protect the heroine, you can then finish the final boss and then have the rest of the cosmosphere spoiled for you by the ending epilogue conversation. It's most apparent with Jakuri.

In addition, if you wait until the final ascent before doing much with Cloche, you'll be asking yourself "uhh...why are we having a friendly talk here when you are two floors above me trying to kill me, Infel?"

>> No.8135266

>>8135249

I guess the intention of the cosmosphere restrictions were to prevent the main story from being spoiled and the assumption would be that you'll be progressing with your 'chosen' reyvateil as quickly as possible. It'll be rather difficult to have multiple scenarios based on where in the actual story you were.

You can still finish the game without a bad end from your position. As posted before in previous threads, Totori doesn't shove deadlines in your face at every step, but it can be brutal since you are tossed out into the world without an inkling on what you should be doing, so it's pretty much understanding how to rank up quickly and effectively.

The biggest tip I can give really is check the license details and aim to clear those objectives as efficiently as possible and do as many quests as possible. You should always aim to do the 10 requests per rank since those are miss-able. You will get a number of random points, mainly for defeating x number of y monster type, or just by adventuring by itself. Stack up quests, and clear those in one huge batch. I was planning circuits to clear a whole set of quests and sometimes ending up moving from Arland to Alanya/vice versa in the process.

The only toubling part would be the ANIME ORIGINAL VERSIONS of Ryner's choice for the phase 2 heroine and combine them both, as well as never diving beyond phase 4 for either girl, and then followed by an ANIME ORIGINAL ENDING involving Misya going on a song tour, Orica making a music box shop, and Eolia returning to her tower administration job and leaving Ryner all alone with only his father to comfort him in the hotel at night.

Nope.

Her big gripe is that her body is neither that of an adult nor a child. Its stuck at that awkward stage in between. She keeps her face covered because she doesn't have the look of an adult otherwise.

What she REALLY wants is to experience childhood and adulthood as regular people do.

Was yea ra sonwe infel en yor
Which is a really nice subtle bit of foreshadowing you'd probably only catch in replays.

Also, the translated lyrics for METHOD_REPLEKIA/. for the bit they use in the anime scene before the Ryuju fight fitting really well with the actual scene itself was brilliant.

So far they're making a good impression, my request was processed shortly after I placed the order and the proxy order was made about 10 minutes after I finished the first payment (first payment is for the item itself, second payment will be for shipping).

On a different note and from the NISA twitter page:

How bad are the additional costs? Delivery outside of Japan, especially through proxy services, usually costs a ridiculous amount.

Not bad at all, at least so far. Shipping fees are probably gonna suck though; insurance usually means EMS or DHL which costs like 1000 - 2000 yen. You can choose that you prefer cheaper shipping (probably air mail) when you place the order.

Keep me updated on that, I'm curious to see what the grand total comes to.

I had expected that by now I would be sick of listening Hymmnos, but this is not the case. It's the first time this has happened to me with anything and it's been years now.

Yeah, I foolishly wanted to buy a certain 26,250円 box set when it came out, but with shipping fees and importing taxes (herpderp 60% of the item's value) it would have gotten to an astronomical sum. And there's always the chance that the guys from my shit country's customs liked the item and made it disappear.
It would be nice having real CDs and merchandise, I would gladly give them my money, but it's not going to happen.

>> No.8173082

>>8169893
Wait wait wait, you're ordering Mio through a proxy?!

... You do know you can get that from amazon.co.jp, right? And they do ship worldwide (that's how I got my AT3 OST and LE hymmnos concert box set). As of this post, it's 2,804 yen plus shipping.

>> No.8173168

>>8173082
Amazon's shipping rapes some countries for no apparent reason.
For example I'm an Ausfag and I tried ordering Kara Kola and the LE version of ~Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor~ from Amazon.co.jp. I got to the checkout and what do you know; the shipping fee was 100% of the combined cost of the items.

I thought I was insane when I contemplated buying 2 CDs for $50. With the shipping cost included right there that's $100. For 2 CDs.
Fuck that and fuck Amazon.

>> No.8173197

>>8173082

I'm fully aware that it would have been cheaper to order directly at amazon, cdjapan or whatever. Or I could have tried a local store that does imports, though they tend to overcharge like mad, depending on what you want to buy (and Mio happens to be one of those things).

The whole point of my order is getting the bonus item (chronicle key score), though, so I kinda have to order at the GUST shop, which doesn't do international orders.

I'm an ausfag too, and the last shipment I got, which were said CDs, cost me 9,581 yen in the goods themselves and 2,800 yen in shipping/handling.

>>8173197
Oh, you were after the bonus printed score. Carry on then. And BTW, I have to say I am damn proud that a rather notable portion of us in this thread are buyfags even if the objects of our desires cost us a significant amount of moolah

Interesting. I just re-added my order and the shipping has been reduced since last time. It used to be ~3600円, now it's 2600.

Still pretty ridiculous, but less insane.

Wait a minute. I can't into moon, and neither can google translate apparently.
Is it that if you pay for an order over a certain amount you get the printed score as a bonus? I thought the Meruru Handkerchief was the bonus? If so, how much do you need to buy?

>> No.8173274

>>8173264
An arbitrary Shikata Akiko's CD to get the score, and over 2500 yen or so to get the handkerchief.
The moon is not exactly strong within me so I'm not quite sure myself.
