It's not just based off that. The premise is that Sanae is a character from the outside world where there are fantasy video games where you do butcher everyone in your way, and that somehow Sanae got the borders of fantasy, reality, and fantasy mixed up in her head. She was just playing a fantasy game, that's all.

That could be deep, or it could be pretentious garbage, but it's not "gore for the sake of gore," because the author is attempting to write something more into it.

Ooh, that reminds me of that Tohonifun doujin about EoSM, where Sakuya should have killed Reimu with her time stop and knives but the universe reversed itself to make Reimu win, because Reimu WAS the System. In that one Reimu was all serious and somber all the time, because she's used to the life of being surrounded by youkai and being the chosen enforcer of the land's rules. At some level, the gore is there because the artist in question likes drawing gore, the same way that in some works there are a lot of chibis because the artist likes to draw chibi style. But it's not entirely irrelevant, because the story and the art go together; they're conceived as one thing.

At some other theoretical level the ludicrous gibs are there to drive home the point that a game is not a game if people are dying.

And here is the problem, which code of morals are we going to go by?

No one's opinions are any better or worse than anyone else's, but many people are convinced that their beliefs are objective fact.

I am evil for eating meat according to many vegans.
I am evil for not believing in a deity according to many theists.
I am evil for having a penis according to many feminists.

There is a fairly decent chance that a majority of people in the world could find a reason to consider me evil.

I happen to think that most of those people are fucking idiots, but that's just my opinion.

At the end of the day most people serve their own interests and profit at the expense of others. Labelling anyone as evil for this is childish.
