Koakuma went from being a nameless midboss to the most perfect Touhou ever conceived.

Mokou and Kaguya are equally shitty characters, with or without fanon.

Kaguya was my answer. Every character involved with Kaguya is awesome, but Kaguya herself didn't make an impression on me as having an interesting character design or a very noticeable bullet pattern theme.

She's really the least interesting character in Imperishable Night for me, and the only reason I ever found her interesting was her relationships with Mokou and Eirin, two of my favorite Touhou characters.

Most Touhous are blank slates. You're just projecting characteristics upon them.

Touhou M1 Grand Prix wouldn't have been as funny or awesome without the fanbase personifying the cast.

Originally they tried to make her Queen of Emo and she had a beyond retarded fanbase. It doesn't help her that she looks like a guy in-game, either.

Then people realizes her design is perfect for making her really hot, so they started doing that. Then they started playing up her being a trickster. Then they also started playing her up being a terror. And there's also cuter stuff, like Nuesis and Invasion of the Nue-girl, where she's more of a sub than one would expect of an ancient powerful terrorizing trickster.

True to shape-shifter form, Nue plays basically whatever role is required of her, she plays it well, and she looks a damn fine sight doing it. This is such an astronomical improvement over her initial place in fanon that it's almost impossible to conceive that they're actually the same person.

(The cherry on top came not from fanon, but from XD, where she made her third appearance in four games and trolled the shit out of the Mima fanbase in the process.)

Yeah. She had the haircut and the outfit, and the names of cards like Red UFO Invasion of Rage and Blue UFO Invasion of Grief didn't help.

But the final product ended up being something so much better, so it all worked out in the end.
