So I heard the number of Touhou circles dropped by 10% on the last Comiket.

Was that a con wide trend due to tsunami and Ishihara or Touhou is starting to loose steam?

The population of Gensokyo has also increased.
I don't want to make hasty conclusions about this though.

Touhou peaked for a few years from about 2005 to 2008-9. It's become less 'trendy' if that's what you mean... the 'new' has worn off.

Generally, Japanese anime/manga/games only survive by continually introducing new characters, even if it's the same rehashed plots time and again. It's the same with Touhou, and although a new cast is added to the dramatis personae every two years or so, it still revolves around the same developed world with its fixture characters.

Eventually, maybe people will get tired of Touhou and it will die out except for the hardcore crowd, but those generally aren't the people that produce content for it. I'd say Touhou has another 5-10 years to go before stuff stops being made for it. Either that or ZUN stops making the games and eventually the hobby goes under because there's nothing new to work with anymore.

The touhou games have been going downhill since SA,

Just wait for Zun's slump to end and the fans will come pouring back a comiket or so after.

What a sad thought...

Games will still be made regardless of how many people sell merchandise at cons.

Slump? In what way?

>>8093809

It can be, yeah, but nothing lasts forever. It's hard to imagine ZUN making Touhou games in his 50's, although it's possible. I get the feeling ZUN is burned out on Touhou, and probably has only kept it going past IN or so because of how crazy people are for the series. But once ZUN stops making the games, that'll be it... even if someone else picks up the torch, even with Kannushi's blessings, it won't be the same. You can see how much less detail has been put into Touhou games from about MoF onward. They're still good games, but they just don't offer the depth of experience that earlier games did.

Touhou is dying. But that's a good thing. It's gotten too big.

I could do with only 10% of everything that is currently being made, and 2% of the total amount of current fans.

I blame the unsexy, uninteresting Taoists.

You are silly. I'm a person, not an encyclopedia.

All you have to do is wait and learn to speak Japanese, because that'll be the language that the holdouts speak.

ZUN has explicitly stated that even if his entire fanbase disappeared he would continue to make games if he wanted to. So at the moment he's still making games because he wants to, even if he is running low on ideas.

People say a lot of things. I think he's pretty bored with Touhou already. Newer games don't show the dedication and soul they used to.

Because Reitaisai and Kouroumu are near Comiket.
