For those who need help with Totorin's harder bosses, this is how I did it.

Shadow Bands on everyone, for double turns. Totorin gets triple turns if you used/Duplicate a Dimensional Egg on her.

Since endgame bosses like the OzeanKaiser has too much resistance, I pretty much stop using bombs but have a few with Final Attack+, Effect L around to duplicate with. Get your other characters Skill +X% and have them spam their attacks, while Totori on her turn duplicates regen items, mp items or an Elixir will all of those functions. Don't forget that max hp increasing item.

To make sure others go first and spend their mp/hp, give them items to tweak their speed. Have Totori move last to heal them. In case you have trouble against hard hitting bosses, with Shadow Band you can always attack on the first turn and guard on the second. Defend + guarding Totori while the enemy attacks cuts down a lot of damage. Don't be afraid to use the item itself and not duplicating it if you need it.

Since I have Dragon Scale made armor, I passively regen hp, steal hp from enemy when I attack and regen some due to the effect of the Elixir. You shouldn't die unless you have low max hp or you forgot to Defend.

Mimi just joined my party. And now I must choose between Gino and her since Melvia is the only character doing any real damage right now. Gino needs certain Adventurer Levels for his events and 25 for his last one and is on the same level as Totori while Mimi's is lower. He also has much higher LP. But Mimi is in dire need of FL, she has slightly higher HP and ATK and much higher MP. Though nobody except Melvia has learned any skills yet.

Which of those two did you guys keep around when you got Mimi?

There's FAQs on GameFAQs and it looks like the materials vary by quite a lot, so you can't just focus on crafting one type.

Mimi is tsundere so just go add her into your party. I think you can't really lose friendship by not recruiting people but they may complain to you.

I got this game first in Japanese, found it hard to understand. Borrowed an English copy and I'm having a lot of fun. Now that I have an idea I'll go back and finish Meruru in Japanese (with a little work).

Consider that certain JRPGs need Japanese knowledge to play (like Atelier Totori or Meruru), but others like FF13 not so much. I wouldn't recommend buying a PS3 just for this game, or any game even but PS3 does get plenty of JRPGs and if that's your thing then maybe go for it.

Yuri wasn't a 'don't give a fuck' character. He's got more of a cynical outlook in life and has been through some shit before so he rolls with the punches rather than whinge about the bad hand he's been dealt. The last thread had a lot of Mimi. Consider it as a break to guard against fatigue.

Anyhow on Totorin gameplay, I could kiss Astrid for leaving behind a single particular item which solved all my money worries in an instant. The moment I saw it, my Rorona memories were triggered and I knew I was in the money pile. Sure it takes ~2 minutes to cash out two spring waters, but at 5k cole per round, that's my definition of breaking the economy. Process a batch of 10, go back and synthesise a new item, repeat... meanwhile the Chims are busy manufacturing/duplicating particular ingredients or stuff that can't be wholesaled. I might need to go back and redevelop my bomb lines to incorporate the higher quality ingredients I have access to... That is, if I can afford the time to do it because I royally bootched making the ship (Didn't realise you had to speak to Cordelia to start the last chain of events to get the ship recipes... The bloody ship is made out of S ranked parts without trying)

Rorona beating Sterk AND Gio in the arena is canon. Sterk already knew that Gio was way stronger than him and is one of the primary motivators for Sterk to keep on training. Even when getting the advantage of an ambush Sterk gets his ass handed to him by Gio. Astrid End is considered as the 'true' end for Atelier Rorona.

Sterk also tells Totori after a few outings that she's a lot better than he expected and expresses disappointment in that fact (because yet again she's not someone who'll rely on Sterk to protect her). He's got a serious knight complex...

I swapped from using Nefertiti to the default for that boss fight. I was a little disappointed in that fight because it was easier than the Black Dragon and the Glass Spirit. Those two kicked the living crap out of me./ I guess that teaches me for fighting optional bosses without getting the top level accessories. I'm still using Runestones, Spirit Necklaces and Gibate Anhks as accessories for the resists.

Guess it's time to buckle down and custom tailor some new accessories and if I can manage it, optimise the weapons and armours. Not that I'm disappointed with my current weapon/armours.

I'm probably going to make Mystic Rings as the 'primary' accessory once I set up the production chain. I'll need to produce a brand new high quality Arland Crystal, aim for a near 100 quality Polish Powder and then concoct a Sylph Breath with the traits I want on the rings then spike the trait points pool with a Spirit Stone to replicate the traits from the Sylph Breath to the Blessed Coin. From there, I can use the Blessed Coin as the base for the Mystic Rings, tack on a +10 all stats with a Dragon Tusk that'll also negate the Muscle Atrophy effect then use another high quality Spirit Stone to spike the trait point pool again to set the traits and get the Block L effect. Phew... That accessory is going to take a good 2 weeks to manufacture...

Urrrk... The Mythical Rings that I spent about a month to manufacture are not what I expected. yes, it transfers HP and MP that's consumed into a random stat, but those random stats mean HP or MP. No appreciable increases in Atk or Def during a 14 turn battle against the bosses in that stupid tower. On the plus side, taking damage = charging MP, using skills = small heal and using the Dimension Egg on Totori gives her a nice HP boost. The rings do appear to soak a lot of damage due to the Block L and I was noticing that Mimi with the rings was simply not dying while Sterk who was still using a Gibate Ankh for stupidly high resistances and has more Def was hitting the deck.

For all you OCD synthesisers, the elemental Dampens/Cloaks are not applicable to accessories. The only real way to get meaningful resistances would be to use the Spirit Necklaces or the Gibate Ankhs

The play times for the Atelier games are variable depending on how long you stay stuck in a rut researching and developing a new item synthesis. Just got Platinum Rank.

I notice I haven't really synthesized much. I guess I just felt I haven't really needed to. I might need to it again to upgrade my armor but otherwise I've synthesized a lot less than I did in Rorona. I spend more time just running into different gathering areas and doing some quests to get my rank up or fulfill the Rank Artisan achievements (also finally did the do-9-quests-before-any-refill achievement... only for the 12 one to appear right after, dammit).

Anyway, is this bad? Has anyone else not synthesize often?

Well I'm not too worried over Rorona's End since this is my first playthrough and I'm doing a blind one (i.e. not consulting walkthrough for true end).

I initially thought I was synthesising a lot less items, then 'something' happened and I was synthesising like crazy updating my consumables and setting up chains to get particular results on ingots/cloths or just items in general. I think that something was just the realisation that the initial batch of items I had wholesaled and was using were well past their prime. Bombs were doing less damage than Totori's basic attacks, healing items were nigh pointless in that they couldn't negate a round of hits, not having MP or LP recovering items etc...

Since you've hit Platinum Rank, you should really look into getting the Traveller's Shoes made. Those are a massive time saver (They cut the travel time on foot between Alanya and Arland to ~14 days from 21) and relieve a lot of time pressure especially when you get into the last two years because you'll need to travel a lot.

Just finished Iris 2, so I am now only four games behind.

I have to say, though, the one thing a video game can do that pisses me off more than anything else is when the game is easy for the first 99% and then you hit the final boss and suddenly the game starts fucking you in the face. I don't mind games being hard, mind you, nor do I mind games starting easy and then gradually gaining difficulty, but putting a huge spike right at the climax, thus potentially forcing you to go back and grind/minmax (thankfully I just had to do a bit of synthesis and shuffle some equipment around in camp in AI2) and completely fucking the momentum of the game, is pretty shitty.

well about half a year ago I was in the same situation as you:

while browsing on /a/ someone posted the youtube link to METHOD_REPLEKIA/.
and I kinda got interested in the franchise.

today, half a year later,
I have bought all origna playstation games,
AT3 as limited edition in fact,
bought the art book,
and
cleared every single route for the girls,
cleared all the extra content in all games
(100 IPDs, all talk topics etc)
and listen to my favourite hymmns on a dailys basis.

so I guess I kinda like the game.

if you are as fascinated by the music, like myself,
then you should definitely play the games.
the whole concept of music/songs and the story surrounding them is really something which makes the games so special in my opinion.
and you should also read all the lyrics and translations for the hymmns.

I really love the links between the songs itself, their context in the game and the meaning of the sometimes really "different" lyrics.

the best example for this is EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/.

if you listen to EXEC_METAFALICA/. and METHOD_METAFALICA/. and read the translated lyrics, (And know the context in the ar tonelico 2 game)

and then hear/read/know the combination:
EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/.
= nerdgasm.

I loved that particular scene in AT2!
my favourite game of the series just for this song/scene/story

another interesting example for the "story within story" aspect of ar tonelico is EXEC_FLIP_FUSIONSPHERE/.

the story which is told in the lyrics is really noteworthy and doesn't fit the context of the song in the game at all.

hmm let's stop the discussion about music here.

the game itself is your typical jrpg with sci-fi, post apocalyptic, fantasy elements, the story is rather good, especially AT2 imo,
All 3 games are linked together and create the great finale with the end of AT3.

oh and the best girls are Misha, Cloche and Tyria!

Should I replay it and try getting the true ending, or head straight to Totori?

>> No.8084020

>>8084003
Personally, I would recommend a run to get the True/Astrid End. The techniques and pressure the true end places on you will serve you extremely well in any Atelier game since you'll learn/have to use efficient techniques, go through how to maximise what you do, and how to run rings around the synthesis system to get what you want, for the lowest cost and how to tailor traits to make very effective equipment and items. If anything, it'll show you how you can do things faster.

Although it doesn't have the same 'tick tock' of Rorona's 3 month intervals, Totori can be just as brutal on the time front because you do not have any easy time posts to help you calibrate yourself if you're on track, or if you've just wasted a month for nothing.

I've just about finished my first playthrough of Totori and I've got a huge list of stuff that I will do better in my 2nd+ play through as soon as I'm done collecting and collating all my data for a synthesis reference.

Don't tell him that, Iksel's healing is pretty much unlimited once you get his levels/HP up, even better if you can get him to learn his second-tier healing. I don't know how Lionela's healing is, I never used her much because her element clashes with Rorona's and Cordelia's and she's the weakest attacker in the game. So, it might not be a bad idea to keep Iksel in the party all the time. You'll need him, anyway, to reveal his special ingredients in each dungeon.

The only real good healing items late in the game is the Elixer and the Healing Bell, which you should try to wholesale.

The game ends on 6y6m30d (or 6y7m1d?...something like that)
When the boat is finished you need like 30-45 day of travel time (go east, leave the island to the south for later) + one boss fight to reach the place where you need to go

So I decided to take a break from Rorona since the game wore me out (second year, vulture assignment, zero motivation to continue). Instead, I decided to backtrack in the history of Atelier games and started Mana Khemia.

After a few hours, the game already made it on my "wtf how did I manage to miss out on this great game all this time?" -List, kinda similar to back then when I stumbled upon the Ar Tonelico series. It has taught me that this whole alchemy stuff can actually be fun, when you do it for a reason (upgrading your party)!

Also, whenever I hear Nike talk, I keep imagining a catgirl Dalian in her place. (<3 Sawashiro)

MK2 is a step forward and a step back. I love the tweaks they made to the combat engine, like everybody having a variable strike, defensive supers, and even further streamlined harvesting/synthesizing. But on the other hand, the characters are pretty weak and the character balance is done along elementals instead of their roles in combat, so instead of MK having every character be very useful in different ways, MK2 is most characters are very similar in usage barring a few incredibly broken skills and you can only modify your party in the single post-game dungeon.

MK2's synthesis system feels like cheating in a way. They bloody list to you all of the possible effects on an item in the library so you don't even need to experiment. It's just a matter of looking at the effects, deciding on what you want then nailing them.

I will agree that the characters are flat. I'm seriously suffering through Ulikia's route because almost every single character in her group are... urrk and their combat prowess is just horrid. Raze's group in contrast is much more interesting combat and personality wise.

Et's quirks are far more pronounced and amusing when Enna is around (the 'duel' in the first of Enna's character events between the two of them is rather amusing) while Chloe's snarky perspective adds companionship to Raze's rather 'oh shit, here we go again' attitude to things.

That's kind of the point of having that 'reward' ending.

Some items that require Arland Crystals would have different effects depending on what kind of gem you had as an effect. I personally preferred the Runestone because it was easier to manufacture initially. You don't. You'd tend to aim for the True ending once you've got all your gear pre-synthesised in earlier runs or you know exactly what you want to do and cut out as much of the extras as possible and know how to minimise time wastage. New Game+ advantages of having the best equipment lets you ignore the level requirements for any zone up to the 4y+ areas, which gives you a lot of extra breathing space to work on your alchemy levels so that you can get those traveller's shoes and the like the second you get the recipe. Also knowing that you can get the boat speed upgrade before you actually make the trip across the ocean cuts off a good month or so of travel time compared to a near optimal run and multiple months if you've stuffed things up big time (like on my first/current run), PLUS, being able to get through the earlier areas without relying on bombs means that you can afford to have your chims feed themselves with their own pies because you don't need them to duplicate ingredients or items for adventuring.

I've 'resigned' myself to the Mimi end for my first playthrough and I'm spending the remaining 4-5 months just synthesising optimal equipment and cataloguing synthesis info such as allowable traits, cost level contributions and the like and finally filling out the library as much as possible (and making the Chimpie). While building up a ludicrous bank balance of course.

And now I have defeated Evil Face. What is it with Arland super demons and dressing all snazzy?

Well as Totori said, there's really nothing left to do but random adventuring. I guess I should try to craft optimal equipment, get to Galaxy rank, and try to set off or come close to set off as many ending flags as possible so I don't have to worry about them in the second playthrough.

Although the latter two may be difficult. I'm starting to run out of time - 6y2m27d - and I haven't triggered any ending flags yet. Probably the only ending flags I may have time for are Gino's, Chim's (depends on how fast they eat the pies), and maybe Melvia's. Unsure about Sterk (didn't complete the beer quest and walkthrough mentions he needs to drink), Rorona (FP not high enough, events take a long time to trigger), and Marc (FP nowhere near high enough). Mimi's impossible since I missed some of her events. Oh well, I'll see what I can do with this playthrough and do the others in the second playthrough.

Oh, when you guys are optimizing equipment, what are your preferred traits? Element Power/Enchant Element, Convert Damage, Element Dampen/Cloak, Enemy Repel, Attack/Defense +, etc. etc. Element Power is very tempting due to extra damage, Convert Damage would be nice for recovering HP on the easier encounters, having strong element resistances is great for survival... But always doing criticals against enemy types, gaining extra stats, regen, inflicting status (especially sleep) are also pretty nice. I find it so difficult to choose.

+10 to def, atk and all stats. I'm not going to worry too much about +speed as speed only really makes a difference if you're evenly matched with the monsters. I'll be using Mythical Rings as my primary accessories so for the most part, I can ignore resistances except for special cases (The Terra Bomb Squirrels and the first Dragon need high fire resistances to take down early). +30HP would be handy to kick start the beginning but best weapons + convert damage L would negate the need to heal for most of the game. Skills +30, MP Cost -30% are standard. Holy Power to resist Instant KOs and Healing Power to have regen on the accessory covers all 5 traits on the accessory. Atk +10 and Convert Damage L on the weapon will cover pretty much all the needs for the early parts of the game where you just brute force past stuff without needing to worry about status effects. Slapping Repel Animal, Beast and Demon/Ghost would cover the remaining three traits on the weapon and give you a massive advantage over the stuff you'll find in the early game.

+30 HP, MP and LP, especially LP on the armour would help immensely in the early game as well. +LP is nearly vital for Mimi at the beginning since she has very little LP and if you spend a month out on the roads, she's going to be exhausted. That puts 4 traits on the armour when adding +10 Def, so if you move the Healing Power from the accessory to the armour, then put +10 speed to the accessory, that'll cover all your major stat boosts.

If you need specialist equipment, might as well make that per-run but keep the general quick start gear as default.

>> No.8104777

I'll keep all them in mind (I've given the game a rest for a little while). I guess elemental resistance aren't too important, then?

I found it incredibly difficult to get meaningful resistances on gear outside of using the Spirit Necklace or the Ankh because of their effects. TBH, I only had problems with the Dragon and the Terra Bomb Squirrels that resistances helped in a significant way. I'll be making wholesaleable versions of the Spirit Necklaces and put them on Cordelia/Iksel/Ceci so I can replicate them on new games for the cheap and easy resistances.

I use the Mythical Rings, which do a great job in reducing damage via their Block L effect, which also appears to reduce elemental damage since I had Mimi with the rings, lower overall resistances and defence take more of a beating than Sterk who had a good 10+ more def and +20 resistances on average. That's not including the endless MP stream from taking damage.

Which walkthrough do you guys prefer to follow when trying to get True Ending for Totori?

This one: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/991771-atelier-totori-the-adventurer-of-arland/faqs/63191

Or this one?: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/991771-atelier-totori-the-adventurer-of-arland/faqs/63157

The second one is familiar to me as it's structured the same way as the Rorona walkthrough I followed.

I'm just looking through the equipment I am able to make. shadowband is the best, right? It sure seems that way.
Also, am I supposed to be losing health each round while wearing it, or did I just add a terrible trait without realizing it?

It has HP Degen by default and I don't think you can remove it. That's the trade-off for having 2 turns in a row.

>> No.8107450

>>8107406
you can "remove" it by having the hp regen trait (from the dragon scales) on two other items

>> No.8107481

>>8107406
If you're willing to spare a slot for healing power on all your equipment then you can just overpower the degen that way, though.
It's a pretty good deal, especially since you're probably gonna be trying to find 0 cost traits to put on the shadow band anyway since its cost level is so low.

Good evening, gentlemen. The first time I played this, I didn't put Mimi in my party immediately and eventually she came into Totori's workshop complaining about not using her help and she moves to Arland. If I invite Mimi into the party the moment she appears and use her all the time, does she stay in Alanya?

>> No.8107945

>>8107649
She normally relocates to Arland regardless.

Blind-first-playthrough player here.

I finally beat it. But unfortunately I was wrong about when the game ends. It ends on 6y*5*m30d, not 6y6m30d. So I only had time to get the normal end, even though I could have also had Melvia, Gino, and maybe Chim if I had more time. Oh well, looks like my second playthrough will be busy. I'll be following a guide this time.

This game was pretty good, better than Rorona. I noticed it had more serious/dramatic moments, too, whereas Rorona was pretty light-hearted all the way through with only a couple exceptions. I wonder how Meruru will be.

FFFFFFFFFFFFF and I thought the game was just cockteasing with her sidestory.

Also, I am really horrible with the time-managing. On my first playthrough I wasn't able to reach the last adventurer rank (or trigger any ending flags) so I got the bad ending. Now I'm at around y5m11 and still need 800 points...

>> No.8109881

>>8109874
The story acts like she isn't in the party, sorry.
Also, no battle pantyshots. Covered up by monsters.

>> No.8110323

>>8109874
woah woah woah... y5m11 and you've got 800 points to go for Galaxy rank?

I'll assume you've been to the remote village so you've cleared the Normal end flag. What's your Adventurer and Alchemy levels?

General time management tips:
Synthesise in batches. Supplements take 0.2 days each? Make them in lots of 5. Something else takes 0.4 days each? Again, lots of 5. 0.7 days? Ideally in lots of 10 (7 days) but that'll come down to a judgement call on whether or not you have the materials, need that many, can duplicate the item via Chim/Wholesale and can get the traits/effects you want with a lower count. 0.9 days? Do the same with 0.7 day items.

When adventuring, the game always advances by one day when you leave an area. Try to leave a little bit of time left on the gauge so you don't get hammered by a day when you can avoid it. This may mean you don't pick up a gather spot(s) or avoid that last enemy fight. An exception would be if an area has an 'achievement' for grabbing all of the gather points. If there is such a thing, get it in one hit because normally that means those places have a LOT of gather points. If you're in a fight, fight it. It's not worth running away because you get the time deducted regardless (unless you'll get KO'd in that case, run and try to get away). You can look in a gather spot before you commit to taking anything in it without a time loss.

Don't over-synthesise. Wholesale and the Chims exist for a reason. Use them, abuse them. Don't be afraid to hot swap a wholesale item if you really need to duplicate an item quickly. Do your own synthesis or adventure while you're waiting for mass replication from chims.

Good enough is good enough. No need to keep hammering quests when you've got all the points possible (do 50 of each type, get S rank in 15 of each type). You don't make a lot of money from quests in any case.

Make the Traveller's Shoes, Gathering Gloves, Warp Portal, Backpack ASAP.

How is the translation for Rorona/Totori? While working through my backlog I've recently completed AT3 and I'm playing Neptunia right now and some of the translations are either downright wrong or they've just thrown in extra stuff for absolutely no reason. Having stuff like 'bro' thrown around kind of irritates me too. Why do NISA keep doing this?

>> No.8111757

>>8111573
The localisation for Rorona/Totori are perfectly fine in most cases. Probably the only really annoying thing is the unnecessary name change from Esty Erhard to Esty Dee ROTFLMAO STD get it? So funneh /sarcasm which unfortunately had to be carried through to Totori where the attempt at a pathetic joke hits a brick wall with Filly. My understanding of Japanese isn't advanced enough to pick out any major issues with the dialogue translation but it seems to be fine/acceptable for the most part.

NISA is NISA. Wouldn't be right unless they made an unnecessary name change or slip in dubious lines here and there. The optimist in me hopes that they get enough of a profit with their Bleach licensing to put more money into the localisation and QA staff. It certainly bugs me to no end that the Library in Totori has a big fat typo with 'Category' being 'Cateogry'

It's actually more like 6 months. That's insane especially considering that if GUST were to release their own game mid-year this falls right in the middle of their crunch time. If you look at the credits, GUST dedicates a lot of their staffing resources towards the localisation.

I recall reading an article on Siliconera that NISA said in response to requests for faster releases behind the JPN releases that it's difficult because of GUST's schedules, the fact that GUST likes to help with the localisation in the first place and they've released Totori ~1 year after Rorona and in doing so, raised the question if it would be hasty to release the next soon after a previous one.

Last I heard, GUST was co-developing an Atelier Otome game with Compile Heart or someone like that. They probably have less of a stress load as a result of that. Question is: is anyone here going to take a serious look at that or give it a miss?

In any case, I threw my money at the screen when I saw the localisation news and the release time frame. I'll be spamming F5 on the NISA store page and THIS TIME I'm going to grab expedited shipping. I've got local and imported copies of AT3 and Totori now and my wallet isn't going to hold out for much longer like that.

Standard shipping normally gets things from there to me on the day they come out or before. Do they not ship before release date for everyone?

>> No.8113751

>>8113723
First thing, Australia. Second thing is that my shipments have typically never been in the first few shipping batches. For Totori, I put in for the Priority International Mail, which has a estimated shipping time of 6-10 business days. I got it at the very end (10 business days) which was nearly 3 weeks after the release date. The Express Post with guaranteed delivery was only a few dollars more than Priority. As for the AT3 CE shipment? First Class, took 6 weeks.
