There's more than one game series being discussed in these threads. The Atelier games are generally about item gathering, crafting and character relationships set in a fantasy world. The Ar Tonelico games are similar, but less emphasis on gathering and crafting, more on RPGish plot, throw in some visual novel, and mix in more of a sci-fi setting.

There's more than one game series being discussed in these threads.

Gust's mainstay series is the Atelier line of games, which can loosely be described as alchemy RPGs, with a focus on item gathering, crafting and character relationships in a fantasy setting. They're considered relatively light in combat compared to other RPG's, excepting the Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia subseries.

The Ar Tonelico series is similar in that it's an RPG with crafting elements, but much more emphasis is placed on character relationships, with VN style segments comprising an entire mode of gameplay. The games' music is also a big selling point with fans, and an integral part of the sci-fi setting.

>> No.8021317

I am just finished phase one of AT3 and I am very disappointed. Saki is an ok heroine but Finnel is god awful. She is trying to get at Tatsumi's cock and use him while using the MC. I wish Gust would stop with the slut heroines, AT2 was bad enough with heroines as you could get.

I liked Salavec Rhaplanca so much that I put together an animation storyboard for it in my head.

Verdict: Salavec Rhaplanca and a ton of other AT songs are highly feasible as animated PVs. Since they are songs which tell a story already, putting an image to them would have amazing results.

Too bad I don't have the talent and resources to make it happen, my imaginary storyboard for Salavec Rhaplanca is so fleshed out it is a waste.

Man, they really should have made that thing the actual last boss and gave it multiple forms instead of Ciela. I felt the latter was kind of anti-climatic compared to the former, but it might have just been the pace of that battle.

Also, has anyone tried to see what happens if you let the penultimate boss atttack the sphere too many times? I actually had to try hard to let it use its special attack (which I learn is damaging that thing) by letting everyone but one vanguard die because he activates it so slow and my teammates always break it.

>> No.8027690

>>8027683
Rorona is good to play just to get the character backgrounds in place if anything else. As far as actual 'adventuring' goes, it's not as engaging as Totori since the combat system is very primitive but still somewhat functional. Aiming to get the Astrid ending will also serve you very well for Totori since you'll know how to squeeze every drop out of the time you use as well as seeing how to maximise shortcuts in everything you do.

If you're set on playing Totori, it would be worth going through Rorona if you want to maximise the experience. You probably won't be able to go back to playing Rorona after Totori because of all the quality of life improvements they've made with Totori (I mean seriously, it takes ages before you get a multi-use attack item in Rorona or at the very least, get Wholesale up and running so you can use items with abandon while Totori starts off with a 0.5 day synth time item that has 3 uses each and has good AoE range)

Looking at the character flags in that walkthrough. Oh boy, some of them sure look "fun," especially those that require you to be practically psychic. Mimi's in particular. Also Rorona's requires you to be Alchemy Level 50 -- a very difficult feat in the previous game and was only able to achieve in the second playthrough but just barely. Crap.

Oh yeah, another Adventurer Level 50 requirement for Totori and Mimi. They really are the Rorona/Cordelia of the game...

I figured they were the R/C of the game when I read up on Mimi's personality and her and Totori's relationship. It was more of a, "Well, as if they weren't already like those two..." kind of thought.

It was hard for me to reach Alchemy Level 50 in Rorona because both finding the ingredients to make the really high-level items (like the Elixer or the ultimate pies) and actually synthesizing them took up a crapload of time. Hopefully I'd get more time in Totori.

Working for the Astrid End in Rorona had conditioned me to seek the quickest path to hitting the goals and really push it. Request stacking, abusing wholesale to manufacture synthesis turn ins and replicating adventuring supplies so yeah, in a way I'm going all out as if I were aiming for another Astrid end. Though there are a few differences. First, I'm not getting every single request since there's a few I have dropped or ignored, and secondly I haven't focused on Marc or Gino's character events. Having Rorona in the party is great for the AoE damage, dropping two sets of bombs per turn plus Rorona's basic attack is AoE. I just need to synthesise some decent armour for her but that'll probably come about once I get my alchemy levels up by another 6 odd levels so I can synthesise the next tier of gear.

But yeah, quality over quantity. Spend the time to make a great item, then abuse the game systems to mass replicate them. (In Mana Khemia, I would churn out a crap load of cheap low quality items, then make a single stupidly high quality version to reset all the traits and effects to the new one).

This topis has really made me intrigued about these games, but just from reading some of these posts, it's quite intimidating to not only have two different series to start with (Ar Tonelico and Atelier), but multiple subtitles within each, such as the Atelier <name here>. Is there a recommended game to start with?

>> No.8040606

>>8040535
Personal recommendation would be Mana Khemia, which is one of the more combat/gameplay oriented Atelier sub-series. PS2 game with a PSP port. The lack of a strict time schedule means you can spend as much time as you like gathering materials and synthesising before you decide to advance the story at your own pace and the general gameplay is engaging enough on its own before you dig your teeth into an item synth system which is easy enough to pick up, but has enough depth to make it worth your while trying to synth the perfect equipment.

Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm has probably the 'easiest' synthesising system of all the games in that it's very forgiving.

The three Arland series games, Rorona, Totori, Meruru, are more 'management' heavy than the other localised Atelier games. Rorona in particular can be brutal in time management and the item synth system is both more intricate and unforgiving. Mess up and you will waste both precious time and materials.
Totori doesn't have the full on 'tick tock, time is ticking and you've got an assignment due in 12 days' time pressure, but there is another sort of time pressure in that you have a goal, you generally know what you need to do but you decide how to do it. It is still possible to waste a lot of time if you're inefficient (Hint: Minimise travel time). If you want to play the Arland series, I would recommend to play Rorona first because of the setting is being used heavily with Totori. Not to mention, you'll probably won't be able to go back to the simpler game mechanics.

With the Ar tonelico series, unfortunately you'll be best served going through them in order because of plot spoilers

>> No.8040691

>>8040654
I disagree. Of the three localised sub-series, only the Arland series is actually management heavy.

The Iris series was purposely more about adventuring than the item synthesis and Mana Khemia is a rather drastic retooling. In my point of view, what's important as an introductory game would be to have the absolute fundamentals in (item gathering, item synthesis) but wrap it in a gameplay that compels someone to keep on playing and explore the other games. The critical part, item synthesis, is rich enough in Mana Khemia where you can spend hours trying to rework items and equipment to a monstrous state and you have all the time in the world to do it. Yes, the combat system in the MK series is the best in the Atelier line, but it's best to throw it out first to allow newcomers something to drive them to play and synth those items well.

There's little point in throwing someone into Rorona or Annie which have elementary gameplay outside of the management aspects if they haven't got a taste for item synthesis.

A little confused here on the MYU fight in AT3. If you don't kill it, you get locked in the bad end? Or does it lead to the normal end for the girl of your choice followed by NG+ in your choice of a phase?

>> No.8041223

If you run out of time, you can only get the normal or bad endings. If you win you can get normal or true endings. Normal vs true/bad depends on if you stop the song or not. Stopping the song and not defeating MYU leads to bad end.

Ah, okay. Since I lost to MYU (That thing took hits like nothing...), I guess this means I'll have to rely on NG+. I've done some reading on my own and I guess I can just get the bad end first, then normal and finally true.

The guide I was reading said to load up a save from phase 2 instead of using NG+ to jump back there, why is that? I mean, wouldn't it be much quicker to use NG+ due to your higher levels and whatnot?

The MYU option starts you right at the battle against MYU if I remember right. But doing that makes you miss the last heart point event so you can't change it. Its better to have different save slots if you're going for the different endings.

You won't have to restart from phase 2 until you're going for the other girl.

1. Bad
2. Normal

4. Back to phase 2 and then repeat 2 and 3.
5. Move onto phase 4 for the 3rd Revyatail?

Still working out that last part though. And by the way, though I sad I'd get the bad end, I just know I'm going to feel horrible about it once I get to it.

And is it just me or is 3 a lot shorter than 1 or 2?

That's just the point though. The games that are currently localised have been the two of the most adventure/combat oriented Atelier series and it's only with the Arland series that we're getting back to the original core game play with a heavy emphasis on time management and a big focus on seeking particular ingredients.

As far as anyone who played the localised PS2 games would think, MK is pretty much the type of game play to expect when it comes to the focus on heavy adventuring/combat with item synthesis in a supporting role.

I do agree with making the point very clear that MK and the Iris series are general exceptions to the Atelier series as a whole when it comes to the gameplay focus. I still think that MK would be the best 'gateway' into the Atelier genre as a whole because it has an engaging enough game play to stand on its own and have item synthesis providing it own effective lure into getting people to care about creating high quality or custom items without forcing it.

My order was 3 heart Finnel, make a save at M.Y.U, lose the fight, save at Ar_Ru, grab the bad end, reload Ar_Ru save, grab the normal end, reload M.Y.U. save then faceroll him and continue to finish the game. Start new game+, put two hearts into Saki, one into Finnel, kill M.Y.U. in time, save at Ar_Ru then grab the normal end, reload save, continue with the true end, shortly before the point of no return make a save, confess to Saki, finish the game, reload, confess to Tilia, finish the game, reload, confess to nobody, finish the game. This means you can get all endings and trophies within the course of two playthroughs If you NG+ the second playthrough it becomes beyond easy. Easy modo and/or encounter down items make it even easier. You can play through the entire game in a very short time at the cost of it being mind numbingly boring.

As for your question I thought the game was about the same length but it was more drawn out in certain areas. I left the game running for a few hours at a few points too but I still finished the game with 30 hours roughly so 25 hours of playtime which is about the same as what I did in AT1/AT2. It probably felt shorter due to all of the action being stuffed into phase 4.

So theoretically, wouldn't it be quickest to do 2 hearts for one girl and the last one on another? Then saving at certain key points you should be able to get the ends for everyone using just one file no?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't True end require going through all of phase 4?

'True end' relies on absolutely nothing other than what happens with Saki's song and whether you kill M.Y.U. in time. 2 hearts with one person just means that you aren't locked into them however you can't confess to the person with 1 heart either. First playthrough with Finnel with 3 hearts was purely because I like her and I wanted to see her extra scene. You can only get 3 endings on a single save due to the heart points spread out so you need at least two playthroughs. The way I did it allowed me to play the game as I wanted on my first playthrough, which was on hard, finding all the chests, talking to everyone, crafting everything, fighting Akane three times and focusing on the story. The second playthrough was blitzed through on easy purely for extra talk topics I couldn't get and three different endings. You'd honestly be surprised what 99 of those encounter down items, level 70+ characters, easy modo and knowing where to go can do in regards to cutting down the playtime.

I disliked Mana Khemia to some degree(level up style) and I couldn't get into Rorona. Should I give Totori a chance? I really like the Art style of the Atelier games and I heard they made Totori gameplay more fun.

>> No.8046859

>>8046788
Going to be tough to recommend... Is there anything else that you disliked about Mana Khemia apart from the Grow Book style of levelling up?

The vast majority of Totori's improvements are quality of life improvements. The core game play is still extremely focused on item synthesis, and you are thrown into the deep end because you don't have hand holding from a rigid objectives framework to guide you form point to point. Although there is a lot more freedom with Totori, there are an equally large number of ways you can screw yourself over, such as purchasing a recipes book much earlier then when you can actually use it and thus kill your cash flow. Time management is just as important in Totori as it was in Rorona, and it can be even worse because you don't have a big fat sign saying 'You must do this in 90 days'. You can easily blow two months going around finishing 5 requests if you fluff around and don't prepare properly or plan a travel route.

Totori is an improvement over Rorona in terms of its gameplay and flow, however it is not a drastically different game. You're going to have to give more info on what you liked and didn't like with the other Atelier games before I can say with any degree of certainty if you should give Totori a shot.

Well I only really disliked the levelling system in Mana Khemia. I mean, you could fight mobs but not grind them for exp. I kinda missed that.

Also I kinda dislike STRICT time limits but can live with them IF they give you enough free time to do other stuff.

Don't know what to say else. The screw up part you mentioned kidna worries me. is it really THAT bad?

>> No.8046941

>>8046895
It's more of a fact that you aren't prevented from making stupid mistakes. You can screw yourself really badly if you have no sense of time management but that's kind of the same as sleeping for weeks at a time in Rorona. You are given a rather lenient amount of time to accomplish the first major task (Reach Rank 7 as an Adventurer in 3 years) and I've actually hit that goal in ~1.5 years counting 16/6 yr1 as the starting point using my Astrid End honed skills/methods.

The time limit is a lot more lenient by far when it comes to being able to do your own thing. You aren't constrained with absolute deadlines for the most part, but it really depends on whether or not you are able to exercise the most basic time management skills. Travelling between the towns is an obvious time sink (1 month round trip initially. That hurts big time).

In a way, you don't get training wheels when playing Totori. You have to be able to judge for yourself if you are capable of doing something, so in a way, you really are in complete and utter control over Totori's story.

I guess the big thing I'd like to know would be what your thoughts are about Rorona in terms of the various aspects of the game. Combat, story flow, what you're actually doing, the synthesis system etc...

>> No.8046955

How long is an average Totori playthrough? I'm assuming its the kind of game that encourages you to play multiple times due to time constraints and such. I'd just rather not sink 20+ hours into something only to get fucked over near the end because of simple mistakes early on.

I've only played Atelier Annie and didn't like it, but a friend said that one isn't really like the other games and is pretty bad.

>>8046955
The 'enhanced' new game feature apparently starts you off with however much money you have left over as well as your items/equipment. That goes a long way to boosting the subsequent playthroughs. I'd estimate 25-30 hours for the first run. Contrary to the doom and gloom talk of screwing up, the leniency of the time schedule allows you to pretty much salvage all but the absolute worse performance for a decent ending. If you can hit a 3 year goal in half the time, with some wasted time, you'll seriously had to have screw up big time and you'll deserve the bad end, otherwise like most GUST games, you pretty much have to purposely aim for a bad end. Even the requests have a huge leniency with the due dates. I think they're like 2 months (60 days) on average, which is huge.

Annie is a mixed bag. I will admit that I'm enjoying it a lot more after working my ass off for the Astrid End because I'm 'attuned' to the frantic work schedule compared to when I first played the game (and all of its simplicities were... a major turn off) so I'm able to concentrate more with the character interactions.

>>8047004
Totori is a better game in virtually all areas (the filtering UI for the container inventory is a BLESSING FROM GOD/whatever deity you subscribe to) and the adjustments to the time costs in synthesising items compared to everything else you do is great for experimentation. My only complaint would be splitting the wholesales between two locations can be a bit irritating, but all is forgiven when Chim is introduced and once you figure out how to keep track of which place has what items wholesaled.
If you're absolutely sure that you're fine with a simpler combat system than most jRPGs with a very heavy emphasis on tinkering with items and ingredients, then go ahead and grab Totori but if you're fundamentally incompatible with the item based gameplay, then there's not much that can be done.

I don't know why you'd need or want to grind for exp in the Khemias anyway. They're easy enough as it is.

It really is a much easier and forgiving game than Rorona.

Took me like 15 hours to beat it, though I was playing in between projects and such.

One thing Rorona did better though... it was in earning money. Dear lord I was poor as shit up until I was able to make Spring Cups. Jobs pay absolute shit even at max alchemy/adventure rank with all recipes. Nothing like making 200 cole off a job that takes 4-5 days to do...

Currently playing Atelier Totori. Melvia just joined me. Nothing else has happened so far. I guess I'm supposed to just keep doing the random jobs from the bar until the next event, right?

Also, is it just me or did the difficulty ramp up? The third area opened up and I'm met with Audras that deal 2-3 times as much damage as the old enemies, they have higher defense and HP, and Melvia is the only person to do any reasonable damage to them. Also Gust seemed to have signficantly nerfed level ups in Totori. In Rorona you get a good amount of HP and other stats, normally in the 3-6 range depending on the character; in Totori you only get 1-2 points in ALL stats, even HP; hell in Totori's first level up she didn't get any Atk, Def or Spd at all. What's even worse is that battles take time now. It's pretty much pointless leveling up in this game now, yet they expect us to want to level two characters to 50.

You're just beginning the game. Also, equipment partakes a much more important role now, though I wouldn't call leveling "pointless". In fact, it helps alot, since some bosses in Totori can actually be incredibly challenging. The HP gains aren't exactly noteworthy, but damage dealt, defenses and whatnot do iron out alot as you keep playing, and fights don't really take up much time in comparison to gathering or traveling, so I suggest to never run off a fight; you'll appreciate the EXP later.

Melvia certainly carries Totori and Gino for the early stages of the game at least until the first rank up where Hagel suddenly remembers about his commissioning scheme. Oddly enough, if you grab the Ceci DLC, she starts off at level 1 but deals damage that is nearly on par with Melvia at the start of the game... I loled when I got an event with Melvia about her being concerned that Totori was catching up to her as an adventurer. Then I loled even more when I got the next event and Melvia reveals she's rank 4-5. Totori was already rank 7 for about a month at that point and complained that Melvia got it easy with not worrying about the renewal process.

Upgrading to +3 attack weapons, even if they are of the same 'type' is a huge boost and you'll probably only need to spend 3-4 days to make that first set of ingots unlike in Rorona where it'll cost you 6 days for 3 ingots. That should pretty much key you into the fact that equipment upgrades and getting good traits is a very necessary thing to do.

Levelling up is still necessary. You need every bit of def you can get, and the gains from levelling will go a very long way to reducing that 30 damage hit to a more manageable amount.

>>8048107
If you enter a fight, by all means you should stick around and finish it off (unless you're getting your ass kicked) but I'd advocate for some very careful time planning. Finishing a fight within 2-3 turns will cost 20% of a day. Harvesting will cost 50%. The aim should then be to fight and harvest in such a way that you are left with 10-20% of a day left, then leave and reset the area. Leaving an area will always cost an additional day so even if you have a full day gauge left, it's going to cost you another day ie; a day is wasted. For those safe areas with no enemies but 4 harvesting nodes, you're going to have to ignore one unless you want to spend a full day for a gather.

While they do appear very late, they are by no means pointless because at that stage of the game, you have a lot of tools which compress and magnify the amount you can do in a single day. Multiple Chims replicating items, being able to ignore a large amount of travel time, speed gather critical materials for the initial synthesis and a fully bridged wholesaling array means you can pump out a serious amount of productivity. At least you unlock the major adventuring consumables (mass AoE bombs, Ahnks for buffing) early.

I remember some of the individual DAYS when I was playing Rorona were taking in excess of 15 minutes since I was running around grabbing requests, completing them on the spot, setting up the next production chains, organising what items I needed to make or deciding if I could sink the time towards synthesising new equipment.

Always doing stupid shit like this. Why don’t you try to be a good poster? Just for once? For once in your fucking life try not to make a topic like this. That’s just you, you’re always right at getting it wrong. Fuck you. You are nothing.

I love Totori's world map theme, too. I also love all its variations in the nearby areas and how it doesn't get interrupted when you move between those areas.

Does the theme remind anyone else of Wild Arms?

The first time I heard the map music I just sat there and listened to it for 5 minutes. Really relaxing song; it sorta reminds me of this other nice map theme by Yasunori Mitsuda:

They appear a few years in. You can get them before your license renewal if you find the ingredients, at least some of them.

IIRC, gloves can be acquired as soon as you hit Gold rank. The shoes require souls from the deserted town. The bag doesn't have any really special ingredients required, but you have to do some Rorona events to get the recipe. The travel gate can only be acquired after the license renewal, and all other such items aren't really that important.

So, if you blast through your adventurer ranks, it's entirely possible to craft everything except the travel gate somewhere around mid year two, and be left with vast swaths of time with nothing terribly important to do except clear character events.

The gloves are synth level 33 and requires Threads, Magic Paint and a Mystery type item. The Magic Paint itself is level 30 and requires Tar Liquid and Rainbow Oil which are low to mid level 20 items.

The boots are synth level 35 and require you to make the trek to the abandoned town which have monsters ready to rip you apart if you're not prepared.

To the point, it's difficult to power through the ranks and maintain a high enough alchemy level to make synthesis of the gloves and boots a reasonable prospect when you do get the recipe. Not only would you need to power your way through the ranks, you'll also need to know what you need in order to synth higher level gear and what and where to get ingredients to level your alchemy.

Hmm, sounds a little rough. Oh well, I guess I'll deal. I was going to use a guide for my first playthrough like with Rorona but I decided I'll just go blind this time.

Got a couple other questions, though:

1. Is Extras broken again like Rorona? What I mean is that the system data doesn't get saved unless you change the options or see an ending. So there will be cases where the Extras menu is missing a lot of CGs and music because almost nobody changes the options in the middle of the game, and when you save the system data after an ending the game only gets the CGs and music from your most recent load.

2. Well I finally got my Adventurer's License and now the game begins in earnest. A looooot of areas opened up and I'm a bit overwhelmed. I went through a few nearby areas just to gather ingredients and fight a few monsters. I haven't taken much Quests (unless I can immediately report them) yet because I'm afraid while I'm exploring around the new areas I won't find/fight the things the quest needs and that I'll go over the deadline since many more actions take time now. Any tips?

Hey, I never said it was easy. Although, if you grind synthesis just a little and use 小さい and アリさん専用 ingredients (IIRC 見えない大きさ isn't available at that point), it's easily feasible to synthesize those items early on with minimal savescumming.

And yeah, I haven't bothered unwrapping my English version copy yet, so sorry about the untranslated item traits.

Don't worry about failing a request. Of course, it's best to be able to complete them all because you do need the money, but if you can't find your mark, oh well. Just carry on as usual. I will recommend grabbing a notepad and writing down which areas are opened up at which ranks so you have a general idea on what level the monsters are in them. I didn't and I have to tread carefully because I'll get smacked down hard by the random encounters at the highest difficulty areas I've got unlocked.

I can't answer the question about the Extras. I suspect like other GUST games it's only updated when you perform the clear saves.

>>8053950
Oh yes, you can get Near Invisible traits on items. Typically on the gold gathers.

>> No.8053997

>>8053969

Well, the help menu said if I fail or give up a quest I won't get any quests with good rewards for a while, so that had me worried.

By the way, can I accept a quest in Aranya (I probably spelled it wrong) and report it in Arland and vice versa? An answer would be very helpful here.

>> No.8054006

>>8053997
Yes, you can report in a quest anywhere. It doesn't have to be where you've picked it up from.

The item rewards are kinda nice, but the lack of innate traits for some of the items really puts a dampener on the whole thing such as the innate additional healing on the Mandrake Roots and the Lightning Damage on the Thunder Stones which only appear if the item was 'naturally' gathered. I mainly use the higher quality ones as quality boosts for synthesis or it has a particularly nice trait. I honestly wouldn't be too worried about failing a quest but don't make too much of a habit of it. Just keep an eye on how long you have to fill that request and try to explore all the areas you unlock so you fill out the details. Unlike in Rorona where it'll kill your rep if you fail/abandon a request which is really not a good thing...

Make sure you have some multi-target heals. I got my ass kicked the first time, synthesized an elixir, wholesaled it, dicked around until shop restock, went back with 10 elixirs and destroyed the monster. I was a bit underleveled though. Between the travel time and synthesis time required, you may be fucked if you are too.

Elixirs come from a book you buy at the snowy village.

Basically no. If you don't have any elixirs, you're talking about a month to get those in order + get back to the tower. That leaves you with one month to get those 600 points. I don't think that's possible.
