There are politicians who want to bring back the gold-backed currency that basically everyone abandoned decades ago, but this is mainly a ploy to weaken the power the government has over the economy and, at a more fundamental level, to levy taxes.

Fiat money is basically the occam's razor of currency. Gold-backed money has value because it's backed by gold, gold has value because we agree it has value -> money has value because we agree it has value.
