I'm curious into why people buy dakimakuras. Why did you? What do you do with it?

I heard that the printing can fade after only a few months. It's good to have a spare cover.

Addendum to this: there are also 155cm and 160cm cases.
In fact of the three cases I currently own, none are 150. (Though I've got a couple of 150s on preorder.)

I'm of the opinion that stretching a smaller case over a larger pillow (e.g. 155cm case on a 160cm pillow) is more pleasant than having a larger case flop loose on a smaller pillow, so if I could only have one body I'd go with 160cm rather than 150cm.
But obviously having the exact body size for your case is ideal, to avoid any subtle stretching of the image.

There is, and it's actually also quite cheap. There's a seller on eBay called janelee922. If you have big enough pictures he'll print them on dakimakura cases for you. It currently costs 25$.
The quality of the material and print is really good. I washed mine 4 times already and the colors are still beautiful. He also sells cheap stuffings.

The quality of a real dakimakura and pillow beats the knock-off by a long shot. I'd recommend getting a real one over a knock-off if you can afford it, shipping is a bitch though.

I personally buy official dakimakura's to hang/display and then buy knock-offs to sleep with. I don't want to damage/put normal wear and tear on such an expensive piece of lovely merchandise. The official ones feel a bit nicer but it's nominal for the price difference.

The most expensive cover I own cost around 28k JPY. Most of my others are cheaper ones off Janelee (batch sales are amazing). Currently I have 16 covers and I feel like I still want more.

The oldest one I have is about 6 years old (knock off) and the fading isn't bad at all. It unfortunately has a couple of scratches in it but that's mostly due to it being my first cover and it's age. I don't use it anymore really because I bought another of the same cover to have a more "clean" version but I slept with it nightly for about 5 years.

As for maintenance and cleaning I always just machine washed warm/cold with lovely scented detergent (no bleach or fabric softener) and then hang dry.

I'll try to get a picture of my current collection sometime before this thread dies if anyone's interested.
