So can someone explain to me what's so great about Touhou. The games seem to be pretty good smups but I don't see how that warrants all the popularity, there are other good smups.

I can't but help see it like a pedobears wet dream with everyone ogling the loli characters in the game.

If Touhou were popular just because of the girls then there would be another billion series with the exact same success.

It's many factors involved, namely the fact that it's a one-man project who only claims copyright towards the games and lets people do whatever they want with the music and characters, the latters which are left to huge interpretation which enhances imagination, be it comercially or not. The only thing restricted is a full-fledged anime.

Vast array of cute magical characters, who are only officially characterised in very broad strokes by borderline joke dialog so there's lots of room for fanwank interpretation, and almost total license from the creator to produce such fanwank.

Also the music is a big factor, the huge number of remixes and music videos do a lot to spread Touhou fame e.g. when Bad Apple was featured on CNN.
