Should I just play 6 and Rance Quest since those look most fun to me, or would it increase my enjoyment in any way to start at the beginning? I guess I could rush through 1 relatively fast since it's translated, but not sure if I want to play 3 any time soon.

Rance 6 is a great game on its own and since you already finished Sengoku and 02 I don't think you will miss too much by not playing the older games first.
On other hand Rance Quest has tons of returning characters and the more familiar you're with the series the higher chances that you will be able to enjoy it more.

They all have about 4-5, but so do all of Daibanchou's, and you get to see 2-3 events a turn in Daibanchou as opposed to 1 in Daiteikoku plus most characters interact with and share events with others. Plus, the 6 BBA heroines have upwards of 80 events each. All of which you as the player character are directly involved in. That's really a huge difference to me in making me feel like I'm actually involved in the game instead of watching the same shit play out no matter what I do. Also, short is often a good thing. Daiteikoku really needed to be edited down pretty badly.

Yeah, I understand the physics of it, but it goes back to the problem with the battle engine in general. Every unit is pigeonholed in their use so all you can ever do until the NG+ where you curbstomp everything is just put the puzzle pieces in the right slot. That doesn't feel like I'm moving an army of characters around. If they all had unique ships and everything was more generalized in its use instead of instant death if you put the wrong thing in the wrong place, that would have gone a long way to solving that.

Basically in Rance 4 Rance get stuck in a floating city.
Well he during one of his travel in the labyrinth beneath the city he meets a mad scientist monster.
And that guy had been keeping a bunch of monsters and human soldiers that had been turned to stone during a war there hundreds years ago.
Well the mad scientist picks Sanakia among the statue and decurse her to do some experiment, Rance comes in and kill him.
And being Rance and seeing an unconscious naked lady, he does what he does best.
Of course Sanakia isn't happy when she wakes being a knight and all so she asks for a duel, she loses and get raped again and it ends up with her saying she will get her revenge.
That's the gist of it.

Only saying the later Rance games have an aesthetic elegance that has become more and more rare in RPGs over the last 15 years or so. Something between the extremes of "let's make it as clean and simple as possible for the anime adaptation" and "we can afford Mudbox but it only lets us use brown". Now, whether it looks good or not is subjective, but it does stand on very secure and tested ground, something a lot of RPG franchises today seem to have lost.

That aside, I have to say that Sengoku is pretty different (in a good way) from most rpgs i've played. It's big, with lots of storyline stuff that's interesting and funny in ways that your average JRPG completely fails at. Plus the gameplay really is unique. Sengoku's main flaw is that the system is so unfriendly to experimentation and exploration that you basically have to follow a walkthrough to understand how the system works. I don't mind hard games, but I really dislike games that are unfair or don't explain how they work. Demon's Souls is hard, for instance, but it makes a lot of sense and allows you to challenge it as often as you'd like, instead of allowing you to ruin an investment of many hours with completely innocent mistakes.

Rance 1 and 2, the only others I've played, feel fresh and interesting to me because I haven't played adventure games from that era much. Still, the fact that it's funny, puzzle-filled, and has rpg combat is really cool—I can't totally vouch for this, but it seems that Rance 1 would have been, for its time, a really stunning game. The comparison to Dragon Quest is unfavorable, but you shouldn't be doing that: compare it to Leisure Suit Larry instead. It's an adventure game with RPG elements.

I couldn't call Alicesoft games are rough, which any sane person should understand. Playtesting takes a huge amount of resources that obscure eroge companies can't afford. But they have a lot of fresh and original ideas that I'd love to see catch on in the mainstream.
