Old thread seems to have 404'd, how are everyone's accomplishments going? Started trying for PCB hard today and snagged it a few hours ago with all of my deaths having just been plain stupid until stage 6. Not sure how it works but my clears always seem to catch me at my worst.

Any who, Touhou playing (other shmups welcome) general.

Decided to take a break from the Last Words (unfocused) on Youmu solo & went for all spell card clears from stages 1-6B without focus.

Fuck you, Hourai Elixir.

I have recently beaten EoSD, PCB, and IN, and am focusing UFO right now. If I were to actually use my bombs, I'd probably get to stage 5, but I have a nasty habit of "I CAN DODGE THIS, I KNOW IT" and dying.

A co-worker saw me and we are now in a bet that he cannot beat UFO in a month. He has never played a shump before and thinks Gears of War 3 is the best game ever made.

I just can't get above 10 spell card bonuses on IN Extra. I beat Possessed by Phoenix only when I die on Phoenix's Tail. I beat Fujiyama Volcano only when I die on Woo. It's maddening.

Still practicing EoSD on lunatic. Practiced Stage 2 and 3 to death and am about to complete them with no deaths and no bombs. I know that the real challenge is Patchy's stage which I am not even really good at at hard, so I expect at least 2 weeks of practice mode with Patchy's stage before I am even able to try to 1cc the game.

Also, I tried Extra yesterday again and am managing up until to 78%, not much until I got it as well. Playing Touhou in general since about 5-6 months with playing each day ~1 hour, how well am I doing?

Yeah, this one is terrible, even worse than usual. Despite of a month of not playing, my laptop keyboard is especially ass and doesn't register diagonal movements when shooting or when holding SHIFT. Which explains why I ran into some bullets and made some stupid movements. To get a real run, I would have to be at home on my desktop where the keyboard doesn't suck dick, this Friday.

I don't have a replay of my best run since it got overwritten or something, I think. I just have an arsenal of professional replays that I tried to "learn" from. These are some of my shit scores

That's higher than some people's first clears. Your replay is so confusing. You alternate between performing mild scoring tricks to running into enemies and sitting still in sparse patterns until something runs into you.

I have a feeling I've watched one of your replays before, maybe from a year or two ago, since this play style is really familiar for some reason.

>> No.7959865

>>7959692
I've watched your runs. You probably need to cut watching confusing replays, like WR's or anything higher than average from score.royalflare.net. Make your own route, be creative.

Tips : you can still collect timeorbs if you stay focused for maximum half a second, and tap movements requires probably only tenth of a second. Very useful to dodge dense bullets that requires precise movement (and hitbox position). True, your form should be reduced below -80%... but, there are enough leftovers timeorbs on the screen to pull your form into -100% again, allowing you to collect timeorbs again.

Also, try to stay on PoC for a fraction second longer. The difference between collected item at full value (yellowed numbers) and just below of it is more than 50% at minimum.

Also, try to not crash into critters.

Stage 1: Before you do anything else, practice it for a bit on Lunatic to get used to your hitbox. Stream bullets, take out Rumia.
Stage 2: Use a bomb in the beginning to get rid of the enemies and pick up all the items on the screen. Try to get MAX power as early as possible. Stream more, beat Cirno.
Stage 3: This is where you stop being a showoff shithead and start abusing the Shift key. Bomb Meiling's midboss card if you aren't 101% sure you can capture it. Same for her last card. You shouldn't have lost a single life by now.
Stage 4: Place your character in the mid-left section of the screen and get ready to shoot the three fairies before they leave their magic circles behind. Stream the bullets with very slight movements. Again, if you aren't 101% sure you can dodge the green bullets, bomb. Koa is a joke. Wait a whole second before you start shooting the fairies that clear bullets when they die. Patchu's cards are all about distractions. Focus on one type of projectile and try dodging the other unconsciously. This applies to cards like Sylphae Horn, Agni Radiance, Water Elf, Emerald Megalith, etc. You should be ready to bomb before you get in trouble; if you think it MIGHT hit you, chances are it will, bomb.

>>7961317
Stage 5: Stream. stay still when the big directed arrays of bullets are shot, otherwise, focus on the small, random ones. Try to take everything out before they shoot too many bullets. In Sakuya's midcard stay still in the bottom-left-ish area and move only to dodge something that's directed at you. Stay in the same position and dodge the bullshit afterwards. Sakuya will force you to heavily dodge, it's up to your reflexes now. Her cards all have "safe" spots. When she starts redirecting bullets during timestop, she essentially thins out her own clusters, so they should be easier to dodge. Again, when in doubt, bomb.
Stage 6: I'll let you have the joy of figuring that one out yourself; besides, if you get this far, you unlock the stage in Practice Mode. Starting the stage with two lives should be more than enough. Never lose a life with unused bombs.

Arousal. No, not the sexual kind. The other one.

Apathy is your worst enemy when playing these games as it deteriorates your eye-to-hand coordination but, more importantly, doesn't let you give a fuck about hazards you actually know are coming.

You just have to trick your brain into becoming stimulated. Think of something exciting (but without letting it distract you) or play under some kind of pressure, like a time limit. One day, I saw someone on /jp/ gloat about how he beat Flandre with the hitbox patch, so I went on and proceeded to beat her for the first time in a fit of jealousy and superiority complex (yeah). Just back from playing some more EoSD.
I found a good practice exercise to play on Hard and Lunatic instead of Normal (despite the goal being 1CCing on that difficulty) as a way to lessen the tension (which was too high).

Then i played on Normal again and was less nervous, which was good. But as a downside of that i am taking bigger risks during boss fights, which killed me.
I still have to find a balance when it comes to risking and bombing.

Playing on Hard and Lunatic feels... empowering (I'm playing without credit-feeding).

Regarding what >>7961383 said, i decided to not use the practice mode and just try to do 1CC.

Actually i found out a good way to use practice mode: I just used it to practice specific spell cards or bullet patterns.

Example: Patchouli's attacks.
What i did was
A) First reach the desired practice point
B) Then, stop firing and just focus on avoiding the bullets, but having my finger on the bomb button just in case i find myself in a situation where there is no escape at all.

Thanks to that i got used to 2 of Patchouli's attack patterns which were giving me a headache.

C) Then practice while shooting.

>>7961317
>Patchu's cards are all about distractions. Focus on one type of projectile and try dodging the other unconsciously.
I just learnt how true is that.

The moving lasers part becomes easier once i focus my sight on the red glowing bullets instead of the red laser.

And the next attack has a tempo which i hadn't figure out before due being too nervous.

Stage 3 - Stage portion: You could graze moar 'ere. Also, I see a lot of stickin' to the bottom at the latter parts. If you're more safe with it, it's ok, but it - may - get you killed if you're not sure of your playin'. For Meilin's midboss card... it's generally concidered better to bomb than to die at, if you're unsure of the movement. However, the card IS somewhat static, and can be mostly captured without too much sweat broken.
Stage 3 - Boss portion: Meilin's opener can kill you if you're unlucky. You kept the bombin' finger on X 'ere, so I quess you were aware of that. For the second noncard, try to finish it when there're more knifes thrown by fairies on the field - results in moar points. The two final cards... Your shot is somewhat aimed, don't be afraid of moving to the corners at parts, if you find that an easier way to dodge them. However, it's not exactly the best way to do them, and most people find it best to just do them at the middle and nuke Meilin, hopin' for the best. Nifty dodgin' at Flower Dream Vine, btw.

Stage 4 - Stage portion: Eh, the books before Koa I have not much to say about. I find them hard myself, mostly often bombin' them to the smithereens. The Lazor part after Koa is streamable, tho'. You should pay some practice to learnin' it. Also, the three - final - fairies that make bullets disappear... Start with the middle one, then move left, then right.. Or that's my way, use the one you're most comfortable with.

Not much to say 'bout the Patchy battle, aside from "great work, lad". Agni Shine's... well, I don't have many tips 'ere, given the fact that I rarely encounter it due to different skill card. But I could say, try to dodge one barrage at a time.

>> No.7961785

>>7961781
Stage 5 - Stage portion: You lost it 'ere, huh? The startin' part's somewhat easy - the small-bullet-spawnin' fairies can be cheesed on top of them, while the fast blue ones shootin' ones can be streamed. Midboss Sakuya's noncard can be cheesed on top of the boss. .. Illusional Misdirection's a pattern. Learn to trick around with it, maybe watch a few replays off it. For the latter stage part, stuff might get chaotic at the bullet-spamming-fairy-waves just after midboss-Sakuya. But hey, you get less of those if you waste more time with midboss Sakuya, yay!

Stage 5 - Boss Portion:
A lot of random shit here. What I suggest is to watch a few replays, then follow up onto doing some actual practice runs off the stage. For the first spell card, I find it easier to dodge the big red bullets before conciderin' to look where the blue knifes that may wall you are. (This will result in you runnin' into the blue ones a couple of times until you become familiar with the pattern.) The World... I keep most of my focus on the green ones. Remember to watch for the rest of the shit aswell, tho'. Killing doll's a pain. It might wall you, it might get you clipped. Bomb 'ere if you're unsure.

>> No.7961789

>>7961785
Stage 6 - Stage portion: One rather cheesy way to deal with the startin' spam is to cling to one of the walls - wether one is on left or right side, doesn't matter. - The "blue rings of doom" that follow up are somewhat streamable, you could try lookin' trough a couple of replays and givin' it a few practices. The noncard before Eternal meek walls you if you're not totally aware of everything. I usually am not. Meek's panic dodgin' and prayin' for a not too wallish spam at your face while waitin' for the boss to disappear. Feel free to bomb if you feel unsure 'ere.

Stage 6 - Boss portion: Remi differs from some other Final bosses due to the fact that she likes to start with an actually hard spam. It's still learnable, if you pay enough practice to it tho'. The first card's somewhat static, but it still does have the nasty ability of "ohyougotwalledlol" sometimes. The second noncard's pretty easy once you learn how to trick around with it. Pay some practice 'ere. Thousand Needle Mountain's a nasty one - it tends to get you misread the bullet hitboxes every now and then. You seem to do fine 'ere, tho'. Third noncard's a thing to show those greedy bastards who went for the point items some knifes. God Art's got the most epic walling ability I've ever seen, I get walled fairly often 'ere. But yet another time, you seem to do great. Nifty! Remi's final noncard's a spam + pattern + break for breath. Just remember to hug the boss enough to make sure the card finishes as soon as possible. Scarlet Meister's one of the hardest cards this game has got to throw at you. Some people seem to have a habit to start from the rightmost corner, while others prefer the leftmost one. Pay practice, be aware of your surroundings and hold your hand on the bomb button... Just to be sure.

Scarlet Gensokyo? Yeah, I don't have tips for that, I have never capped it.

This's all I can say at the moment, keep up the great work over there, anon, and you'll make it one day!

Also, I am not suer why, but at times I do Wizard Fox Thoughts perfectly and at times I die on the third or fourth boom. It's maddening, since I mostly go by the sound and can't even deathbomb it when it comes. It mostly happens when the mandala explodes too close, like, just over my character, so I die because it pretty much apears in my hitbox. This happens when I am fairly low, too. Hope I can get the jump-streaming down better there.
Also, Banquet is somehow really fucking hard for me. I have cleared Charming Siege From All Sides in all of its insanity more times than Banquet.

Wizard Fox Thoughts is easy. Just make small, very small, taps in one direction. The card speeds up after a few bursts so you only need to make one dodge for every two bursts. Playing as Reimu might make the advantage for me.

Banquet? The lower right corner is your friend. With ReimuB I start very close to Ran and back away from the wall of bullets and break into the corner when I'm almost out of room. I can generally stare down that second wave and clear it before the wall reaches me.

I can upload a replay if you want.

I guess you're too dense to read more than three words, so let's try again:

You referred to posts in the plural that contained nothing but ad hominem fallacy and personal opinions, whereas at most one suffered from the former and the latter just isn't true.

Are you blind dude? No personal opinions? Really?

Cite me a post where ZUN ever mentioned anything about "true" 1CCs. Nobody is right there, so it's all fucking opinions. I don't care what other shmups go by, they didn't develop the game.

As for ad hominems, either you still don't understand your own citations or you're intentionally trying to stretch them so that they magically "aren't".

I've been trying to capture more than 10 spellcards in IN Extra.

My last attempt saw me not even get that much because I bombed Hourai Doll. Pitiful.

I can't 1CC any game on Normal.
I've been trying to on EoSD but I keep making stupid mistakes, costing me a life (because I ran myself into a bullet, I wasn't prepared to bomb) and I ragequit.

Should I keep starting from 1, quitting every time I mess up? (This is what I normally do)
or would you recommend I take it into practice mode to solely memorize spell cards and form paths?

>> No.7962549

>quitting every time I mess up
Nah, that isn't the way to do things. Only restart when you run out of lives, to do anything less is wasting time on easier stages.

>I wasn't prepared to bomb
You should always be prepared to bomb, at all times.
Well, when playing for survival, anyways.

There were personal opinions, but there were also things that were not personal opinions. Stating the general opinion of a community is pretty much by definition not a "personal" opinion.

And I haven't cited anything in this thread so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

I see. I'm still trying to unlock the Extra on Fairy Wars but I keep getting my ass beaten down somewhere around in the last battle, and then there are a few cards I just can't deal with. Technically I could try and clear all the routes on easy but I would just get destroyed by Marisa so I'm not going to bother.

Getting pissed off is the worst thing you can do really. Rage-restarts only snowball out.

Also EoSD is fairly difficult, more so if you don't have a good feel of where your hitbox is by instinct. Try MoF or PCB. Or just put the game down and play something else for a bit.

>> No.7962588 [DELETED]

Yeah, I did that a number of weeks ago. (Beat Marisa the same day after something like 5-8 straight hours, so she's doable after a fashion.)
The thing about Fairy Wars is that you really gotta snowball from the early levels, and freeze more often than is strictly necessary. Having max power for Fairy Tackle from Hell is really beneficial.

>> No.7962589

Anyway, that one guy who the argument was initially about or something, enjoy your good ending and keep playing. If that's what you care about, just roll with it and ignore the opinion of people you pretty obviously don't care about. There are many friendlier Touhou-related communities out there if you go looking, anyway.

That makes a whole lot of sense

>when playing for survival
I do often mess up just because I'm being cocky collecting (box things?) and I do just need to practice bombing overall.

Another question:
I can't decide between playing as ReimuB or MarisaA. I'm not terrible at staying somewhat under the enemies, but I'm wondering what exactly the advantages and disadvantages of each character are

They're pretty similar I think. Main difference is movement speed - if you can handle faster movement Marisa is nice, but Reimu's precision has its moments too. Also, Reimu does have a bit of advantage in stages with wider spread, as well as the option of moving in close for shotgunning.

Marisa A is significantly better for the Extra though because she can really trivialize Royal Flare, and you don't need the spread for Flandre generally.

You might want to install the hitbox patch until you are familiar with yours. Also the difference between ReimuB and MarisaA is that MarisaA has more amusing conversations.

It also encourages shitposting because people end up thinking that it's normal.
