Hatsune Miku is a virtual idol. She exists in the virtual space. In the latest Kids React, a group of kids react to the singer.

Footage is shown of the Sega-produced Miku concert, and the kids, while initially WTF-ing, do offer up some insightful and open responses about the virtual popstar, as well as some kids who couldn't quite get their head around the notion.

Toyota adopted the virtual singer for an awkwardly Westernized ad campaign.

Remember Gibson's Rei Toei? Miku's not quite that sophisticated yet, but she's the first real step on that path. By that, I don't mean that she's the first vocaloid, there were others before her. What is different about Miku is that her fanbase grew from the grass-roots up, creating her "image" in an organic fashion no previous virtual idoru had managed to achieve. Her image polymorphs in a thousand directions at once, allowing each of her to see Miku as we would like her to appear.

Gorillaz and Miku are very different things

Gorillaz uses a prerecorded human performed song

Miku uses vocal banks to synthesize a song. If I tell her to sing Kumbaya at 3 octaves higher than what it should be and 4x speed she will do it. When you boil down to it, Miku is just a tool, and THAT'S why she is popular.

Gorillaz on the other hand is a professional band. How much control do you have over Gorillaz?

Miku is a program anyone can use. She is popular for the same reason Minecraft and Gary
