Treebeard actually calls Gandalf young at one point.

And really the wizards are pretty young in comparison to some of the other inhabitants of Middle-Earth.

Technically though, Treebeared was incorrect, because Gandalf and the other wizards have existed since the beginning of time, what with being Maiar and all

But the wizards themselves were pretty new to middle earth, so yeah.

I have all these nice Tolkien pictures by western artists, but I've never found anything of Japanese origin.

Because every time I check the boorus I just find Hobbit yaoi.

I don't care much for this picture.

Or any picture of Morgoth I've ever found, really.

He's always just a tall guy in black armor.

He's basically Satan, so he should look so much more fearsome than that.

In the Silmarillion Tolkien describes Morgoth as being like a great, dark mountain, all icy around the base and fiery at the peak.

Which of course would be hard to illustrate, but I think you get my point.

I do like this little picture of Morgoth and his iron crown however.

Also, this is the only picture depicting a Simaril that I care for.

Because you can't actually see the simarils.

John Howe was one of the head art guys for Jackson's LotR films

he's working now as a head art guy for the live action Hobbit movie

so maybe the film's Smaug will look like this

the appearance of Howe's fell beasts certainly didn't change, after all
