No one's stopping you from continuing to play whatever you play, even if it's super shitty games like what your friends are playing.

Keep in mind, Recettear was at or near the top-sellers on Steam for quite a while; viral/hyped or not, that kind of success opened up the door for this kind of thing proliferating. Steam exists to make money after all, and if little Japanese games turn a lot of profit, then they'll damn well start to stock more of them.

And as someone else said, it's not surprising, considering that a lot of Steam users are really nerdy people and hence probably like this stuff regardless as it is.
