Not sure if this is more of an /int/ thing, but here I go. My girlfriend is Japanese. Her parents were born and raised in the US as well as her. They all speak both English and Japanese very well. She has been teaching me Japanese and according to her, I can speak Japanese well enough to get around in Niigata. She has family there and we're going to visit next month. The only problem is that I don't know any kanji. She taught me hiragana and katakana, but hasn't really done much with kanji. Is it really that important? Are there any essential kanji I should force into my head if I'm just going to visit her family? I thought it would just be a few strokes here and there like kana, but these complex characters are kind of intimidating and I don't know if it's worth learning. Is it worth learning if I only plan on going to japan for about 1 week 2 or 3 times/year?

What does this have to do with Touhou?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain...

Time to die.

Definitely /int/.

Yes, kanji is important. I recommend the Basic Kanji Book, though most of /jp/ begs to differ. At the very least, memorize the first 300.

Also, let me assure you that you don't know enough Japanese to get around anywhere in Japan. A single, introductory Japanese language course put in my place quite quickly.
