I woke up and there's no S;G thread in sight. Let's fix that.

1.20 patch is the first link on this page, it runs fine on my comp. The second link is 1.20a, try it if you have a low-spec PC and run into crashes with 1.20.

Install instructions (hopefully that'll prevent 150+ posts from people getting crashes, like in last thread) :
Please follow the steps in ORDER.
1. Set your Windows locale to japanese. Applocale doesn't work properly afaik.
2. Install the game from your DVD / ISO.
3. Run the official 1.20 update.
4. Launch the game. It should display 1.20 in the titlebar, now close it. If it doesn't, you did it wrong (probably your S;G folder being write-protected).
5. Now copy paste the translated files to your S;G folder : nss.npa, STEINSGATE-patched.exe, cg.npa, and the "dx" folder containing the TLed movies. Backup the original files before overwriting them if you want to.
6. Launch the game. It works !

Most frequent problems :
- I get a black screen / crash at the start of a new game.
3 possibilities : 1. You installed the 1.20 upadte AFTER the translation patch. That was retarded. Now uninstall everything and do it over. 2. Some video codecs on your comp are preventing the intro movie from playing. 3. You have a very low-end computer. Try the 1.20a update.

- The game randomly crashes when I load a save.
That's "normal", it happens sometimes. Just relaunch the game and load your save again. I don't know if it's caused by the TL patch or if that already happens in the japanese game.

- From time to time, the text has small visual glitches.
Play the game fullscreen. S:G PC is a port from the Xbox360 game and wasn't meant to be played in windowed mode. Well, if you really HATE fullscreen, you can probably put up with those glitches, they're not a huge bother.

Well to be fair the unedited text isn't really that bad. The biggest difference between it and the edited version is likely to just be a few typos and grammar quirks will be fixed, and even these aren't that common. I wasn't sure if I'd wait or not, but after reading the prologue I decided there wasn't much point. The biggest thing I'm missing out on are the TIPS, but most of those seem to be just explaining memes that I already knew about.

I just got Suzuha's ending. Gonna go back and do the rest, but do you guys think the best experience is to just go straight for the "true" ending next, or to do the rest of them in somewhat chronological order from where they're triggered in the story?

Also, does anyone know of an English walkthrough? (Or, failing that, one that can be understood with help of google translate or something.) I know one was posted in the previous thread but I lost it.

I found http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?p=4124515 to be the easiest walkthrough to follow. Just ignore the parts that lead to endings you already got/don't care about, because it seems to be designed to run through all of them as efficiently as possible. Run it through Google Translate and most of the Japanese text they give either matches the English choices pretty closely, or are close enough to guess which it means.

I remember there used to be a Japanese site with walkthroughs for many games. Chaos;Head also only had 3 endings (and its choices were a lot simpler, going by the Stein;Gate flowchart...)

I mounted the SG.mds file onto my daemon tools and I installed it.

I went to the crack and it says cannot find libvorbisfile

dunno what that means... oh well..

So I get the Stein;Gate English Patch and put the whole folder into my Stein;Gate folder in the program files...

I double-click on STEINSGATE-patched.exe and I get the same error:

okay, I have libvorbisfile in my steins;gate folder and to double check I put another libvorbisfile in the steins;gate English patch folder... still can't find it.

If you happened to change the nss.npa while saved on that file, that might cause it to crash.

That's the only cause for crashing I can think of.

After having just finish it, I think the translation was done rather well. It read smoothly and seemed to match up pretty well with what the voices were saying. The only thing I can see people complaining about (besides things that will be fixed in editing) is the use of memes, but this is mostly just done to cover 2ch memes that the characters use anyway. There are several different endings, but not any real separate "routes". It also uses a staggered ending structure, similar to what G-Senjou no Maou did, so you can just save before the branching points for most of them and then continue on. The only two that really require you to start a whole different playthrough are the ones in Chapter 10, because I believe they have a bit more requirements than the others.

I clocked in at 54 hours to get every ending, but a lot of that was me tabbing over to /a/ every few lines, posting and reading a bit, and then tabbing back and doing some more S;G, as I often do, so I can't really say exactly how long it would take if you devoted yourself to it fully. I don't think it's really particularly short, though. It has about 38,000 or so lines in it, but the lines themselves are often pretty short.

Make sure you have system locale set to japanese.

Install the game under japanese locale.

Update to 1.20 if you haven't already, (1.20a has less effects but tends to be alot less buggy)

I'm gonna post my step by steps on what I'm doing. Maybe this'll figure out what I'm doing wrong.

(I'll post pictures with numbers)

I'm going to

and I have it in Rars, I'm extracting them into the folder
(See picture one and two)

Now I click on the new folder and see the SG.mds file so I mount it onto Daemon Tools. (see 3 and 4)

now a pop up appears and I run the program. (see 5)

now I'm installing the game.

I see this and I click >Yes
(see no. 6)

I continue installing

and now it wants me to install SdRt4200 so I say okay and continue installing (see 7)

I finish with that and I go to ErogeDownload and get the Steins;Gate 1.20 Update (see 8)

it goes into my download folder and I bring it back to the Steins;Gate folder on my desktop.

I see that message again and Now I know it means I successfully patched it (see 9)

so okay, now I go into my Steins;Gate folder and click on the crack folder ( see 10 & 11)

Now I click the crack and.... it does not work (see 12)

okay, but I go and download something else and change anything. What did I do wrong?

Well if you only installed the nss.npa patch then only the game text will be in english, not the system menus or the movies (which are what come up when you first click new game, two short cutscenes) If you want to translate these, you need the patches for them as well. My god this game has one of the worst VN engines I've ever seen.

- Takes more than 10 seconds to get to the title screen, in other VNs it's less than 2.
- Delays in opening up a menu, saving the game takes at least 3 seconds, etc.

It's not that big a deal, but it's horrible compared to the rest.

That one should work. Drop the folder in where your save data is (C:\User\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Nitroplus\STEINS;GATE) and then load it, should be on page 10, file 80.

Their "routes" are all just alternate endings, though, that can be obtained by simply not opening your phone at the relevant place. If you still have saves from their chapters you should be able to get them pretty quickly. Just get to the place where you're supposed to send a D-mail and it tells you to open your phone, and don't do it and keep continuing on. I don't think the mails you send them even matter.

The same thing happened when I tried to skip the text-revealing sequence in a monologue and be able to read the whole thing right away instead of waiting for the text to be revealed. I also get stuttering text reveal (reminiscent of low fps) when I have seen a lot of text that session. If I remember correctly, the game works smoothly whenever I start a new chapter. You don't have to unlock all endings first to get the true ending. I played a fresh run through without doing this, and was still able to unlock Kurisu+True end. You must read all of Kurisu's messages and answer correctly. If you answer incorrectly in chapter 7 you won't receive any further mail from her in chapters 8 (This is easy to overlook).

Hmm...there's two tracks that don't work in my Sound Library, 'GATE OF STEINER -piano-' and 'GATE OF STEINER -main theme-'. Looking them up on Youtube, I've never heard them in-game either (played Suzuha end and Faris end so far). Is there something wrong with my install or do they just not show up until later despite being listed?

That's weird...I just extracted my sound.npa and the missing tracks are present and fully functional. My title screen is completely silent, I thought it was an intentional choice by the makers (as there are not even sound effects), it gave a pretty weird vibe to the title screen. Just updated from 1.00 to 1.20, the listed tracks still aren't functional. Using the latest nss.npa and .exe.

I read the comments in this thread and the "fix" is to load at the start of the new chapter or to make a new game. I quickloaded from the autosave at the beginning of chapter 4, but it still crashes. Do I need to update my game or just start a new game?
