Personally though, I'd recommend a few shorter ones like Song of Saya and Planetarian to see how you get on with them. Then after that maybe try some longer ones like Swan Song or Devil on G-String.

Like you would any story, check a few reviews or summaries and see if they sound like the kind of thing you're interested in.

YMK, Saya no Uta, Sharin no Kuni, G Senjou no Maou. These are probably the best beginner VNs. If you think you have the patience to read a lot of text for the juicy bits, Ever17 and Tsukihime can be good for beginners too.

You could try Clannad and Cross Channel. Both are pretty popular and well liked, I'm not sure what would constitute 'pants on head retarded' though. FSN can be pretty engaging, but it really all depends on the type of genres you like, just like anime.
