Making professional-grade sculpts is VERY difficult, it's not too hard to see why most aren't up to that level. I'd love a custom from them myself, but for now I'm saving up for others.

It;s not the color. Sigma color is the same skin tone + blush/ blush lines like anyone else. What sets them apart is an appealing solid sculpt, good wig-making, and professionally tight details.
Thinking about trying to contact Dolphin myself, or GouKaOu. Don't know how well that will turn out but we'll see. I'd like an Ayame style one too but I'll try my favored options first.

Has anyone attempted to make a mask before? I enjoy making things and wanted to learn how to use fiberglass anyway, but I didn't get too far. I'm not sure if it is from using cheap clay or if I simply made it too thick. When I have more time, I'll have to try to putty and dremel the cracks, but it isn't looking too good. I need to improve my sculpting anyway.

That was one of the tutorials I looked at. Unfortunately, some of the better looking tutorials were in Japanese or simply not very descriptive. Pictures are nice, but they don't help with material selection.

Run a japanese page through a translator, it's not perfect but has helped me wonders.

Also, sculpt twice. your first one will always be shit. If you have any anime figurines, study those like your life depended on it. Once you have a feel for sculpting, don't look at it for a day or so, then go back and try to spot what you've done wrong. Nose size, eye level, eye depth, eye size, profile, mouth placement, cheek shape, ect are all very important. Learn what makes an anime face DIFFERENT than a human face, making it too much like a real person will yield bad results. Pay attention to how the sides and parts you don't see so often should look. Watch the mouth and lips. DEVELOP OCD ABOUT SYMMETRY. Don't leave anything to guessing or eyeballing, take measurements and plan ratios. Make sure the mask is big enough, make sure it is not lumpy. For some reason a lot of people seem to completely overlook weird dips and shadows. If you can't draw an anime face, you certainly will not sculpt one well unless you reference reference reference.

When your sculpt is dry, use a resin putty or filler like bondo and apply that shit all over and sand it down, then do it a few more times. You can do this in the fiberglass stage too, but a better sculpt will yield a better cast.

I'm mostly talking out of my butt because I've never actually completed a mask and do mostly 2D art, but I've done similar things.

Thanks for the tips. I did use a figure for reference, but this was the first time I've tried anything like this aside from crappy pottery in high school art class. At least the first stage is relatively inexpensive, but it is time consuming. I'll probably try to cut out my own head shape from foam rather than using a wig head if I try again. Trying to work on a slightly tilted and too small head was really annoying. I will also measure things like you suggested.

It's time consuming, but the refining process always goes a lot faster than I expect. What I did first was built the profile down the center. This ensured a good side view and also good symmetry.

The actual word "kigurumi" includes fursuits. In fact, if you Image Search it, you'll mostly see stuff like that. When /jp/ uses the word "kigurumi" what they're thinking of is anime gao kigurumi, but that is still just a subset of the actual word "kigurumi."

Q: is mexican kigurumi better or worse than US kigurumi? or tough call?

The costume is decent, but OH GOD THE MASK.

I'd say that like all things, it varies. As it is right now, kig is pretty rare in Mexico meaning that it's almost nothing but amateurs. And, being Mexico they're probably somewhat poor so there's more homemade masks... In my opinion, in general, Mexican kig is lower quality than US kig, but there are a few good ones.

I should point out that kigurumi at it's heart is a PERFORMING art. Which means performing to an audience. Getting attention from people.
So calling other people "attention whores" is kind of redundant. It's a stupid thing to try to "call someone out" for. Some people do it almost exclusively in private (and have their own reasons for doing so) but putting your image out there in public, similar to cosplayers, is at the heart of the hobby on the performer's side. Getting a lot of fans is a side effect if you are good at what you do and present yourself well.
