The official Key tier list is as follows:

Little Busters!EX>Kanon>Air>Clannad>Rewrite>Tomoyo After>Kudo Wafter

>> No.7854576

Kanon was thoroughly enjoyable.
Clannad was honestly nothing more than annoying. Not bad, per se, just... annoying.

Clannad.

The official KEY list wouldn't have Kanon anywhere near the top.

I didn't say it was shitty. Just that it isn't as good as their other main games. My major contention with it is that it has very poor character routes. It's still a solid 7/10 though.

>>7854606

He ranked it below Clannad and I know he doesn't like Clannad.

>> No.7854620

Kanon had the superior drama and story. All Clannad had going for it was the humor and characters, and they're just a collection of generic archetypes.

Sure I guess. But I've never particularly found Key ero to be erotic. Tomoyo After on EGS has a score of 80, while Kudo Wafter has a score of 69. If you want to see how it is viewed by people other than me.

>>7854613
My issues with Clannad are subjective though, and I can respect why a lot of people like it.

>> No.7854629

>>7854604
What I like about Key is that their protagonists are more than faceless imbeciles with no personality beyond the fact that they "care about others more than themselves" something that is far too common among other bishoujo games.

From my understanding, Kudo Wafter knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything more, and that's something I can respect.
Tomoyo After on the other hand is offensively bad.

I honestly don't give a shit what the site says, that term has been used to describe visual novels in general for as long as I can remember, and I've been playing them for quite a while.

>> No.7854692

I prefer Clannad, though I do like Kanon as well.

>> No.7854693

I couldn't stand the drama in Kanon at all, it seemed so sappy, just a bunch of moeblobs characterized only by the weird noises they made and their "problems".
Honestly I didn't find any of it sad, everything just seemed too streamlined.

Yet I really liked Clannad

>> No.7854718

>>7854654
I don't know. I guess it's because there is a lot more quality...or at least effort, that was put into Tomoyo After, which is pretty much non-existent in Kudo Wafter. Like I said though, I don't think the difference between them is that huge.

>> No.7854722

I'd say LB>Clannad>Kanon>Air>Tomoyo After

haven't finished rewrite yet but I'm guessing it's gonna be between clannad and kanon

overall I'm not a key fan. their humor gets repetitive over the titles and a lot of the drama come from deus ex machina.

my favorite part of LB is its variety. it has a lot of content in it and generally managed to pull it off nicely.

>> No.7854746

Clannad is throughly enjoyable (except for Kyou's route) and still a great read.
Kanon is a classic I guess, never understood the love for it though.
Air is more understandable as a classic but the first 3 routes are pretty mediocre.
Only Saya and Refrain are any good in LB Ex, rest is mediocre as hell.

Rewrite is just weird, for one it's pretty much impossible to compare it with the other Key games.
But I personally found it half-assed, concept is good, it had a few really great moments and the overall plot isn't bad. But the common route is boring, most of the routes are really badly written and it only really gets great in the last route after you trudged through 30 hours of averageness at best.

Basically Clannad is the only one of their title that is solid from the beginning to the end.

>> No.7854800

While we're airing our shitty opinions...

Clannad > Air > LB > Kanon > Planetarian > Kudo Wafuta > Tomoyo After.

Haven't read Rewrite. Too busy with other shit and still attempting to finish eight other VNs I've started and still not finished.

>Kanon is a classic I guess, never understood the love for it though.
I'm guessing most people watched the anime before reading the VN, and some of them have probably never read the VN at all. It seems the Kanon anime is better than the Clannad anime.
For example, >>7854620 would make no sense if you only look at the VNs. Kanon had no overarching story, only the individual routes, and to call their drama better than Clannad is pretty strange, since most of them are pretty meh by modern standards. Clannad's routes were much, much better (as can be seen from VN rating sites, where Clannad is rated significantly higher than Kanon), and it has actual story which binds everything together, unlike Kanon. The 'collection of generic archetypes' also makes a whole lot more sense in the anime, where the characters are dumbed down to seem like nothing more than their archetypes (especially looking at you, Kyou - brilliant, crafty and ruthless in the VN, generic violent tsundere in the anime).

>> No.7854838

Clannad or Kanon huh?
hoo... I'm not sure.

>> No.7854902

Kanon, because of all the insanity. Let's look at all the routes:

1. Time-displaced ghost bound by a toy uses magic to fix people's lives. This costs her existence points. When she runs out of existence points, she vanishes forever. You can choose to get rid of her earlier by locking her outside during a blizzard.
2. Your girlfriend turns into a fox and dies. You had sex, does that count as bestiality?
3. You pursue a proper incestous relationship like the gentleman you are, but the fates decide there isn't enough drama in your life and send a metallic demon-beast called a car to ruin it. A normal slice-of-life route? Not in this fucking game.
4. Mai Kawasumi waited. The lights above her blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the school.
5. I am going to die horribly and I want to kill myself in a less painful manner before I get to the horrible death part but oh wait here's this high school student let me get involved with him so that I can crush his soul when I inevitably die.
6. I had my share of drama when I was young, so I know better than to get a route and prefer to stay as Mai's lesbian girlfriend. I don't have another brother to lose, you know. Ahaha~ No, I'm not crying. Why'd you ask?
7. I made like half a dozen promises 7 years ago and simultaneously forgot them all. In retrospect I probably deserved all that drama.

It can't match ONE, what with gaining the trust of a mentally retarded twelve year old girl with hamburgers in order to fuck her or trying to get your childhood friend gangraped, but it gets quite close.

>or trying to get your childhood friend gangraped
This still baffles me.
And this is what you have to do to get the GOOD ending.
It reels the mind.

>> No.7855307

>>7854973
Older games seem to have weird flag systems.
Like in another different unrelated title that I've played, one of the heroines is essentially being raped by her lesbian stalker. There's a scene where the protagonist sees this happen, but if you see do that scene, you've just blocked yourself out of the true and good end for that heroine.
But assuming you're on a first playthrough of that heroine's segment and manage to get the flags for the true/good end, a scene will pop up "No MC, I can't accept your feelings and love you back, because I'm impure or love LSR instead" and you'll have no idea what the fuck is going on all of a sudden. I mean sure, they get over that bit like 2 scenes and 10 minutes later, but still.

I'm finishing Kanon right now and I swear every girl manages to out autism the previous one.
