now that the translation is so well advanced, have you played Genius of Sappheiros again?

I have not learned a single skill with Satori yet and this makes me very frustrated.

I want to, I really want to. But It's hard to get myself to play through an RPG twice, especially if a lot of grinding is involved. But I hadn't had so much fun playing an RPG in ages till I played this, so I just might if I drop the current game I'm playing.

>> No.7848265

Do you have to grind like a retard to achieve anything or should you be fine if you progress without extra grinding?

2.06 seems to be expansion only. The shrinemaiden translation seems to be also expansion only. So you should just get it.
Also, savestates are compatible with everything I guess. I transferred my untranslated vanilla chars to translated exp. without problems.

While for completion you need to grind a lot, to actually progress, leveling isn't that important. For better or worse, the boss battles are EXTREMELY strtegic and guide-dang-it. Reading the strategy guide/trial and error is much more important than grinding.

Hint: Etrian Odyssey veterans should feel at home. While most RPG players probably scoff at someone whose entire moveset revolves around defensive moves instead of an flashy attacks, Alice's Defender/Hoplite role is invaluable to your success.

>> No.7848965

for those who have beat the game, did you have a Satori with healing abilities? And if so, where did you get it? Some monks in the netherworld seem to have "Mass Heal", but when I control them, the heal is not among the spells...

>> No.7848997

That's because you can't get some abilities through control. IIRC, I believe the only method to gain some enemy support spells is through charm and wait till they randomly cast it on your party.

Most skills have a 5% learn rate, or 15% with maxed Learning tree. Some have 10% or higher base rate, but support skills are usually almost guaranteed learn (with maxed Learning)

However, Breath attacks have a 1% base learning so it's pretty random, just keep Satori in your party (preferably in a baiting position) through the game to learn a whole bunch of Blue Magic. Bosses sometimes have unique Blue Magic too, like Iku's Thunderclap.

This game, for better or worse, has some of the most strategy-heavy boss fights I've seen in RPGs. Pretty much every boss from now on will have their own gimmick and you'll need the right setup for an easier time. Trial and error, but then again, it's not like you get penalized for dying so it doesn't matter. In fact, try to die a lot. After dying ten times, go to hell (Muenzuka one) to get a formation from Komachi. After dying a hundred times, go to heaven to get another formation from Tenshi!

While for completion you'd need to spend a lot of time getting rare drops and blue magic, you don't need to grind much until near the final boss. Garden of the Sun's cocktrices are just random like that, and grinding's not going to help you much. It's more about strategy and luck. Finding enemy weaknesses is critical to your success (nuke them the hard way first time, then look at their bestiary entry). Also, the game has anti-grinding and you get less and less exp. And you must have read something wrong, because you're close to being overleveled. The 100% exp range is level 18-26. At level 27 you only receive 75% of the exp, and by level 32 you only receive 25%.
>>7860703
Don't worry, there are no missable entries or items. The only exception is a cheap cop-out on Kaguya. There's a trick/glitch about her. Because Kaguya is such a senile, braindead, and feeble mind, she is super susceptible to mind control, and if you try to run away, she'll run away and you won't have to fight her. But then you won't get her bestiary entry. So make sure you don't do that. Although since you can refight most bosses in the postgame, it might not matter, but better to be on the safe side in case the postgame fights don't give you the entries since you normally should have them all (all bosses automatically give you their entries).

Don't bother with rare drops you don't luckily get till later when you can just autobattle everything quickly.

The only missable in the game is a Blue Magic skill for Satori on stage 18.

Don't show favoritism toward any specific set of characters. Well, eventually you'll need to be making use of all your characters unless you want to constantly backtrack to heal. You can switch between characters on the fly in dungeons after all, so once someone runs out of MP or bombs you can switch them out and keep going. By the end of the game regular physical attacks just won't cut it (unless it's got slayer or killer effects, which Sakuya and Youmu's unique weapons tend to have), so you'll need to constantly be using high powered and costly skills.

satori is pretty useless in the beggining, simply because she doesn't have enough mana regen to make it through an entire dungeon while maintaining good damage, on that note...she doesn't even HAVE anything that does good damage.

also, if you want someone to save you from bad situations, Youmou's spellcards deal ridiculous amounts of damage when she's in human realm stance cuz of all the crits. In my opinion, she would be a much better option than reimu.

Early on at least I think Asura realm is even better since that's the one that very damaging hit-all attacks, whereas Human Realm focuses on hitting multiple times, which is better against singular tough enemies.

People shouldn't really bother with maining Blue Mage Satori early on, because you'd then want to put all points in Learning, which prevents you from using her actual combat trees and you don't have good blue magic. If you want to use Satori early, focus on Trauma as her Poison can be powerful, especially with The Green Eyes.

Sanae and Marisa on the back. Mokou should get most hits on her, mitigating most if not all of the damage if Pdef is good enough. Hmm, what makes you say that? Players on the game translation's home thread were claiming Mokou was god-tier in this game, and she has been a MVP for me throughout the game, especially towards the end when I needed huge physical damage. Gets even better once she has Fujiyama Volcano and Possessed by Phoenix, which casts re-raise on your entire party. She's also one of the best commanders for boss fights.

>>7868593
You're not even allowed to grind easier stages without getting heavy penalties in EXP. Also, levels don't matter much in the game beyond the early bits where you need MP. You could be totally overleveled and still be crushed by bosses in a few turns unless you have proper strategy. While the first two bosses were 1-2 turn jokes that may have given you the impression that it's pretty easy, every single boss starting from Alice has their own gimmick. Proper setup is far more important than a level or two.

Also, Breaths are useless unless they're status effect breaths like Petro Breath (which you'll learn to hate in stage 8). They're PHYSICAL attacks that depend on HP. On the other hand, what's wrong with destruction beam? It's very powerful for this point in the game and versatile. I used it even in the endgame. Your problem might be that this early on Satori can't afford high magic attack since she should be prioritizing learning, so you shouldn't be using her for attacking damage at all except if needed for a boss battle.

It doesn't matter, the game's not going to get easy. Plus Power requirement keeps increasing. Plus, the game expected you to farm a lot in the first place. It only gives you about 3-5 of the 20 materials you need to make new weapons and armors at each tier and expects you to farm for the rest. Never mind all the rare drops with 0.1-0.5 drop rates.. If anything, if you're not backtracking a ton you're probably below the power the developers expected you to have, because this game is tough and require very specific growth setups for different situations. And Satori in particular requires a ton of Power because she should have 25 points in Learning before she does anything else, assuming you want to use her as a Blue Mage for random encounters.

>> No.7868865

Hm, so I'm underleveled? Didn't expect that. Well, my team doesn't exactly have the best equipment, only Marisa is up to date with her weaponry, with only Sakuya up to date on armor. Satori doesn't even have 25 power experience and she's been in my party since I got her.

>> No.7868869

>>7868854
Your power does increase, the bar just go up but don't display a "+number" like exp. The exp gets scaled, power does not. Even in the endgame, the fastest way to farm power is to plow through the first few stages. Though if you're farming for items and Satori skills it should come naturally anyways.

>>7868865
A word of warning: Even if you farm a lot of the tier synthesis material like Celestial Peach or Sunflower Seed, which aren't that hard to get since they have like 7-10% drop rate, don't upgrade weapons for everyone, because the actual character-specific materials are very rare and only drop at 0.1% this early on. They become easier to get in the post-game, so for now only make unique weapons when needed. One about every 3 tiers for those that you plan to use is a good idea. Or just use all those regular weapons you keep getting.

>> No.7868891

I recommend not bothering with Satori until she's finished Learning tree and has enough points in others so that she can fight, grab a few generic good skills (the basic multi-target skills) and just keep her in your party through the game. You'll probably learn a bunch of skills along the way, and you can just treat them like bonuses and feel lucky, instead of intentionally grinding for them which is very tedious. Save completion stuff for endgame/postgame when you can plow through most stages on autobattle and survivability is not an issue.

When I finally beat them after trying a whole bunch of parties and formations it was with Alice, Marisa, Hijiri, Patchouli, and Reimu in Hinotori skydance formation with Sanae as commander, Marisa and Hijiri were upfront, and Reimu and Patchouli in the back.

I started off with Reimu's last spell and Hijiri's starfire on Utsuho, Marisa casted mad blizzard and I just had Patchouli defend. Alice buffed her defense.

Second turn I had Reimu last spell again since I got spirit sign -1 cooldown and Patchouli to use royal flare, I then had Alice hourai doll. Marisa could only cold inferno. I had Hijiri KO herself with starfire.

Orin prioritizes reviving your party members over Utsuho and well anything. On the turn Orin revives Hijiri, KO another member of your party so that it ends up as Hijiri zombiefied and another party member dead. On your next turn knock out Hijiri. You can cause a constant loop by repeatedly killing Hijiri and another one of the remaining party members as Orin keeps zombiefying them while whittling her HP down.

On the plus side it means you can die/leave the dungeon several times while dungeon crawling and you won't lose you enemy-killed progress, so you actually have an incentive to kill enemies rather than just running strait for the boss save point.

You're expected to alternate between different dungeons to gather material, but if you really want to grind a specific dungeon, just exit and enter a lot.

If you're using Alice, going with the default Freestyle formation is highly recommended and will let you curbstomp some of the earlier bosses to the point where it feels broken. It does save, it saved when you died. If you close the game while in a dungeon room that doesn't have a save point, it's the same thing as if you died (but without the death count bonus) and you get booted out and lose all yellow items, so leave dungeon often if you get something rare. If you want this baby at the game's end, you may want to be extremely niggardly with iron.

>>7873686
"Kill"? The correct word is "run". I'm one the final stage and have 2000+ runs listed in my appendix. Granted, most of those are from hunting for specific battles, namely metal slim-er, yukkuris.

In fact, as mentioned before, you should try to avoid difficult enemies even if you can narrowly win until you reach the save/heal point at the end of the dungeon.

If you do want to spend bombs and mp to fight Mindflayers however, they're pretty easy to beat if you use Reimu's barrier and target their weakness, or just use strong physical non-elemental skills.

You get more recipes as you clear more stages. Check back at Akyuu when you clear a new stage; you might get some new recipes.

As for how often you should craft weapons, it depends really. For example, Marisa's weapons aren't very useful and she's better off using elemental spells and a wand (not many enemies are weak to mystic element). While Sakuya's weapons carry a slayer effect, which is pretty much a special critical hit against certain races, and is worth crafting. Weapons with slayer effects against Warriors, Magicians, Transcendents, Dragons, etc are useful because of the frequency these enemies appear or how difficult it is to kill them. Crafting armor/shields/accessories might be useful for certain situations/more bombs, but you'll generally find better equipment via drops or treasure chests.

>>7874929
Well, the game's less about level grinding and more about having the proper strategy. Levels may matter to you now when your hp and mp are low but later on a few levels barely makes a difference. Most bosses have their own tricks and you have the tools you need to deal with it, and it's up to you to look through your list of skills and think about what might counter different strategies. Your characters also sometimes give hints when you die. In this case you have a bunch of options. Reimu Barrier, Mokou's commander skill, killing by status effect like poison, Sakuya's Time Stop, and Alice covering another character, or stick with piling on RES buffs one one character, especially Sakuya who has death resistance in one tree.

You don't have to train everyone evenly at once. Once someone falls behind, the game will scale exp gains for them. That said, it's easier to dungeon-crawl if you can switch team members. While good items require grinding, level grinding isn't necessary till the end, and even then it's relatively easy due to all the metal slimes.

Sakuya's best trick is her Private Square but you don't have enough MP and points yet. Her greatest strength for now actually comes from her Slayer swords. Youmu is very powerful but need to waste the first turn to move into a stance. Both are great yukkurikillers.

is it possible to replace alice with youmu if I change formations? or if I want to use her instead of sakuya how do they compare when it comes to fighting normal enemies? I like sakuya's spells but I don't understand why the devs gave her a big sword instead of her knives.

>> No.7875355

It all depends on the enemies. I rarely used Alice for random encounters even on stages the wiki says "you practically need Alice to survive big enemy parties reliably". Anything can work so feel free to experiment around. It depends on how much Slayer Sakuya has on the current stage enemies.

Because knives are already standard weapons and they probably designed them first, and maids go well with zweihanders as Arcana Heart showed.

The other team, I have Marisa, Sakuya, Youmu and Satori helping out Alice, who's underleveled. Byakuren is the commander since she can't take any hits. >> No.7876129

They're mostly good for their slayer effects and bosses. With slayer effects Sakuya usually did 1400-2000 damage to an enemy in that garden, even without it she did a fairly respectable 300 or so damage, sometimes 600. They also don't rely too much on MP or bombs in normal battles to do damage so you don't have to worry about going back and forth as much. But yeah, they excel against bosses. Youmu and Sakuya were doing much more consistent damage than Marisa or Reimu in the battles I've had them in, Youmu was more of a set up heavy hitter while Sakuya was more of a self sustainable powerhouse.

>> No.7876284

>>7876094
Alice's level really doesn't matter at all, unless she's so under-leveled that she can't afford to spam a 2 MP cost skill. Otherwise, she pretty much exists to spam her basic Marrionette Parrar skill or upgrades every turn through the entire game, and won't be able to do too much damage even if overleveled, since she's this games' Defender/Hoplite. Although at around level 33 you get her "signature move" Straw Doll Kamikaze which lets her nuke enemy teams for huge damage, especially if you put all points into her Self-Destruct tree.

>>7876108
In generally magic is better against regular mobs, but good physical fighters with proper weapons and buffs are later often better against elite mooks like those pesky Angel/Demon pairs you keep running into, who have Divine Barrier that make you deal low damage to them in addition to being resistant to most elements. Why are they always working together so well...?

Status effects can also be important. For example, Mokou's 3rd tier gloves silenced enemies. While in lots of RPGs silence is a worthless status, here it's a lifesave since Mokou is fast and often silences enemy spellcasters, completely neutralizing some of the biggest threats, including Mind Flayers and sometimes even Angel/Demons. Sakuya reportedly used to be completely broken but got nerfed by the expansion to the point where people where claiming now she sucked, even though she's still pretty good with all her slayer effects.

I'm not sure, but it might have to do with the two stats used to calculate damage. Each move has an Attack stat and a Magnification stat. The attack stat is factored in with the enemy defense, and the result number is then magnified. So if a move has a huge magnification but low attack it'll still do little to no damage to a heavy defense enemy. That's why some moves say they're good against "low defense enemies"
