On no topic in particular, am I the only one who finds "casual" clothing shots kind of dull? A lot of people seem to like it, but why would I want to see the same stuff I see every day? Stuff like striped knee high socks with worn out sneakers, and kohls denim skirts, topped by cheap tshirts with cheesy graphics on them....i.e. stuff no REAL girl would ever wear irl. at least when a lot of the jdm kigs wear casual clothes, it's pretty cute trendy fashionable stuff that would look at home on a real girl... and that definitely makes them look that much hotter (and less of an obvious dude who buys whatever girl clothes he can get online)

There really isn't much more color that could could add to the face other than blush or lipstick. Personally I don't like anything around the eyes or lips.

Most western makers just need to improve the general shape. There's a few easy mistakes that can be made while mold-making. Some being: Eyes too close, eyes positioned badly, profile poorly shaped, cheeks not angled inward enough at the sides, creating a "fat" effect at 3/4ths or low angles. Most seem to improve with every mask they make, so here's hoping for that. The trouble is that it takes a lot of effort so there's less emergence of new generics, sometimes you're better off waiting till they do more custom jobs and then get one yourself because they'll have had more practice by then.

on that note, there's quite a few "ehhh" japanese makers as well

Eh, I suppose I could go for it. Totally terrified of posting this in case my writing style is super obvious but-

Odette: Your work is lovely, you are off to a great start. Don't listen to trolls and do what you love. Your masks are smooth-looking and you handle things professionally. However, you place eyes too close together. This can be an issue with vision, I understand, but just a few centimeters can make a world of difference in going from "slightly off" to "perfect". As an example, I've altered an image of a recent work of yours. (I don't think I've shown this to anyone, but if I have, please respect my anonymity.) I don't know how well your wigwork is so I can't critique that. Odette herself has lovely hair. Also, you suffer from the "fat cheek" problem, most notably in this mask. The sides and lower sides simply need to be tapered in towards the neck more, instead of being at a right angle to the facial plane. Keep up the good work, I'm genuinely excited to see more from you. Oh, and Cadence's muzzle looks a bit strange at the sides that go to meet the rest of the face. perhaps protrude it less or round it out more at the sides?

Alice: You're almost there. I think you should try to mold another Generic if you can, your recent commissioned doll mask really shows your true potential, and that potential can't be shown if you simply alter a flawed base. Start from scratch, it will be worth it, and others will consider you worth it. Making a face that looks good from every angle should be your primary goal. You make adorable eyes, and you're plenty good with wigs. Work on your paint jobs, the eyelashes on your masks look sloppy and unprofessional. Switch to a method like using cutouts if you can't get them right with practice. Try to study figurines and anime screenshots for proper profiles. It's too bad making a new mask can cost a lot, because I think with one or two more iterations I would buy from you.

Wyu: I understand you are very busy, I do wish I could see you make one or two more attempts at a mask. Your recent ones are nice but I miss the original Yu's subtle charm and smaller eyes. Also, the faces have a weird angle where either the eyes seem bend up or the mouth area is facing too much down. I don't like how you paint black around the eyes either, maybe make the basins shallower? Otherwise, keep up your hard work.

Kanakkig: I don't have much to say but try to avoid wall-eyes, it's a cancer on your otherwise very nice masks.

Newbie makers: IF YOU ARE NOT AN ARTIST: DO NOT START WITHOUT HEAVY REFERENCE MATERIAL, PLANS, AND RESEARCH. The mask making part of Wyu's public galleries are full of horrors and nightmares. If you cannot understand how an anime-style face is constructed, don't try.

I was really starting to lose hope in the kigurumi community with the way our recent threads have gone. It's really nice to see someone actually CONSTRUCTIVELY criticise rather than just bash.

I may not agree on all your opinions but they were well formed.

I really like current Wyu masks, my only complaint would be that they look best on a slight angle, looking face on at the camera makes the eyes seem really big, I think it might just be a perspective thing though.

My general complaint about kig photo shoots is that they all just pose in front of a white sheet or something like that. That's great for introducing a character where that's where you want the focus, but I'd love to see more shoots of kigs doing things. For example a maid could do a shoot where it looks like she is cleaning.

This is one of the better masks I've seen from the english speaking community. The mask looks a lot like the character. I think odette has clean work. I agree the eyes could be slightly further apart however I think the cheeks look great when compared to a image of the character he/she was commissioned. Odette needs to work on her eyes. The material she/he is using is too reflective. The spot under the nose could also dip inwards more for a more Sigma nose look. Keep up the work. Your on your way to being one of the best.

The right shape is a list of ratios. This part is this many times bigger than this part and those two parts are this many times apart as these two other parts. If you measure not just the measurements but also the ratios and the angles of a good mask, you might be able to understand the right shape.

Basically this. Eyes should be so far apart, curves vary on art style but ratios are easy to figure out. The trickier stuff is the things that can't be measured as easily, like making sure the eye area isn't too deep or the nose bridge isn't too big or that the cheeks are curved in the right way to cast anime-style shadows.
