>> No.7819814

Finished Cross Channel. It was ok, but the way it handled the timeloop structure and storytelling wise was pretty shit, having to repeat the same scenes and flashbacks over and over without the ctrl skip function working because lolscripts was annoying as hell.
The VN still did some good plot points with the timeloop (Miki's week was excellent). And the setting is very lazily explained (if you can call it that). The world building was extremely weak for a VN that spends three fourths of it's read time setting up the plot and world.
The pace is pretty bad too, it's really slow for 4 days of each week and then it actually presents the plot of the week at the very end.
Half the cast doesn't develop for shit and the important information about some of them is presented like two hours before the game ends, in the last stretch/continuous week(s).
Also it needed to tone the fuck down the over the topness of the backstory tragedy and abilities of some characters.

I'm not completely sure I like the way it ended regarding Taichi, but I think it's more of a personal thing, so I won't hold it against the VN. The twist regarding Nanaka at the end was completely retarded though. "It makes the main twist in G-Senjou no Maou look excellent" kind of retarded.

With all those complains though, it wasn't terrible either. The cast was likeable despite being crazy, the concept was good, some good use of the timeloop plot point and in general after the first three weeks (which were a bore) it had me reading interested.

It was a little overhyped to me thinking back, but I tried to not let it affect me anyway.

The H-scenes are quite irregularly spaced, and they get less frequent as you go on. Early on, or at least on the route I've done, you can get a whole bunch in quick succession early on, whereas later in the game there can be hours between H-scenes. The ones at the end are also a lot better, in my opinion. I can't say for sure whether its like this on all routes though, having only played the Tamami one myself.

I should link you that literary translation experiment where the same exact text was translated shoddily and then putting great care into it to get the style across, they're like two entirely different things. I lost the link though, shit sucks. Or you could compare Takajun/HA guys Fate snippets with a few scenes a guy named arai translated.

>How are they different when you can get the basic idea from a summary?

Because one of the best parts of a visual novel is being there when the events happen, reading them, and experiencing the stuff. You won't get an emotional response reading a summary, you will get an emotional response while reading the VN. And that emotional response is going to happen because of the overall flow of events, the basic idea, not the style of writing. And that emotional response is the most important part, IMO.

I 'm not the one you're arguing with, but I can't help but disagree on this one.
Say for example a character dies. Sure, you can get the basic idea of death no matter what, but sometimes depending on how it's written, how the character is presented to you, how the dialogue goes it either tugs at your heartstrings or makes you go "oh well here goes the cookie cutter tearjerker". You can freely be or not be interested in writing, but if you play the emotional response card you can't isolate it from writing in my opinion.

But you see, when reading a Translation you aren't reading summary. You still can have emotional attachments and full comprehension of the story, but the writing might be worse or not exactly as intended in the origional VN.

>> No.7827706

>>7827564
"How a character is presented to you' and "how the dialogue goes" are not necessarily related to writing style. Style is more of 'how something is said' rather than WHAT is said. And I think in order to make you care or to be entertaining, it's more important just to find something interesting to say to begin with.

Like, I love Baldr Sky to death, and you can't really say that game had good writing style(in fact, it's hard to get more basic than that), but it was damn entertaining and I really cared for what was happening.

That depends on how well you know Japanese, particularly kanji. If you make the jump too soon, it'll just depress you with what seems like an insurmountable wall. But once you know enough, it's great for not only giving you renewed incentive to learn, but also giving you confidence, helps stop you forgetting kanji by coming across them repeatedly. If you don't know many kanji, you'll probably want to look into using AGTH (Anime Game Text Hooker) with Rikaichan (a firefox dictionary extension).
If you don't know a lot, it's best to start with simple nukige, I found the nukige by Shiritsu Sakuranbou rather good in terms of simple language and there not being many complex kanji (though their more story based two are more difficult).
I started playing the simple nukige when I knew only about 300 kanji, there was a fair amount I couldn't read unaided, but it was still rewarding enough to convince me to carry on.

Cross Channel and Baldr Sky are 2 completely different type of games that don't rely on the same thing.

Cross Channel is a story that relies heavily on Taichi's peculiar thought process, it's very narration driven. The game itself is basically a trip within Taichi's brain and the writing style shows this, if you were to "normalize" the script you would get an entirely different game even if the events themselves would be the same.
So no, you can't say you "got" Cross Channel if you only got a crappy translation

Baldr Sky though is much more event based, there is no need for some strange writing script because it's all about describing the events that happen accurately and the characters themselves are pretty normal.

One style isn't better than the other, they just offer completely different experiences.

> Style is more of 'how something is said' rather than WHAT is said. And I think in order to make you care or to be entertaining, it's more important just to find something interesting to say to begin with.
I wouldn't say it's "more important". A guy with a great writing style can make you care even about food scenes or some inane whathaveyou by presenting them in an interesting way, while you can have theoretically interesting things being ruined because the prose is pretty bad (see a recent example in Irotoridori where every climax is so drawn out and padded by repeated concepts that it loses any sort of effect on the reader).
Sure, writing style isn't the beginning and end of writing, but it sure isn't as unimportant as you make it seem in my opinion

I think this is really untrue.

Particularly because the ability to say the "what" of a conversation is entirely dependent on the ability to execute the "how".

Simple ideas or less meaningful concepts do not require much language finesse to convey.

Really good or novel ideas require stronger technical skill with language.

At the highest level, truly original ideas or concepts require new uses of words to be properly conveyed. I.E. The use of Alienation by Marx, the use of Dasein by Heidegger, the use of Totality by Levinas.

A really good example in VNs is Family Project. In it, we get clumsy manifestations of what Romeo Tanaka is trying to say, but he doesn't say it well enough for it to be understood, until he says it again in Cross Channel. This is working off of translation, but even with translation, the amount of time dedicated to the ideas was not enough and they didn't say what they were trying to say because they were not executed correctly.

Most works fail for one of two reasons:

1) The premise is mediocre/terrible/cliche. This means the creative vision of the work, even if realized, is just not good enough in some way.
2) The author cannot manage to execute the premise they conceived. The more ambitious a premise, the harder it is to execute.

Part of it is that you don't have to understand everything to get something out of a nukige, whereas for a romance and even more so for a nakige, there isn't much meaning in it unless you can understand at least most of what is happening.
But I generally find my nukige to have simpler language than other games. Maybe it's just because the ones I play are full of elementary school students who would naturally use simple language. Or maybe I've just picked a set of nukige with unusually simple language and non-nukige with more complex language by coincidence.

After playing the Ayanobe sisters side of the early branch (月の扉), I have to say that the other (夜の扉) side seems to lack the tension of the first. I don't know if its because I've already gone through it once before, but it doesn't seem to be nearly as intense as it was on the other line, but instead rather more frustrating. This is probably in part due to knowing things from the other route ( Like the existence of the hatch in the kitchen; and that they'd be better off slitting Tomonori's throat and throwing him into the ocean). Kishida also let himself get confined surprisingly easily this time around. I'm not sure if I'd still think it wasn't as good if I hadn't had this foreknowledge and was playing the route blind, and in any case I guess it's a little early to judge this just yet. In the part I've just got to I've just had Chihaya discover a heavily bloodied kitchen knife whilst preparing in the kitchen, which might just be the indicator that things are about to get serious, or then again might just be another red herring.

Why does everyone seem to like Sharin no Kuni more than G-Senjou, personally I think it is pretty close.

>> No.7838327

I liked the Sharin story much more. Not to say I disliked GSenjou, but I found Sharin to have a much more interesting setting and execution in general.

Characters are also better Sharin, the only really likable one in GSenjou were Haru and Yuki (And maybe Mizuha before she became Yuki 2.0).

I especially disliked how Kyousuke was supposed to be smart but ended up being the Watson most of the time.

Unless there was some magical explanations in the writing style I can say I got how fucking stupid the twist at the end was, and how utterly lazy the setting and scenario is.
If you are going to have a magical setting, keep it simple. Don't try to introduce shitty unexplained devices or waste time in explanations that leave holes everywhere and that don't help at all the scenario or world.

I've always found the faceless protagonist sort of unromantic. Sumika and Takeru are supposed to be having a confirmation of love scene.

Imagine if you looked up during the middle of sex and you found that the previously pretty girl you were talking too no longer had facial features, so you have a face with no eyes and no nose or mouth looking at you, with an ominous shadow over her forehead.

What bothers me, is that rather than freaking out, some of you will probably masturbate over that idea. You weird fucks.
