Can someone elaborate? I don't know the details.

The Fujiwara were originally called the Nakatomi, but were later gifted with the name Fujiwara by Emperor Tenji. They were allies to the Mononobe during the Asuka/Nara period (the period in which Miko and co. are originally from). After the Mononobe were crushed and Mononobe no Moriya, the clan's head, was killed by the Soga, the Fujiwara led a campaign/coup againt the Soga and crushed the Soga in vengeance.
