I've been thinking about getting into making and selling kigurumi masks myself. I'm confident in my sculpting and casting skills, and I've made things like Kamen Rider and Sentai helmets, so I've got some experience. My only real problem with the wigwork, I am absolutely atrociously bad at working with wigs or wig fibers or anything like that. I just don't know that there would be much demand for a painted kig built with no hair.

I should tell you though, there isn't much of that nowadays, so don't fret too much. The last thing I remember even remotely like that happening was Miharu politely asking to be removed from a slightly fetishy writing of Wyu's. There is nearly no talk about that sort of stuff other than certain mask makers (understandably) asking that purchasers do not film porn with their masks. In fact, I think the only real complaints recently have been about Ganon, but that was ages ago and there was only a fuss because he was doing it POORLY. Really the only time I see people get mad is when people talk publicly about something a person does not want to be public, which is everyone's right. I think you're blowing your idea of how much people react nowadays way out of proportion.

If you must know about myself, I like kigurumi because I love anime, anime figurines, and cosplay. Kigurumi is like a combination of these things. I don't even want to wear a zentai very much, but it's a necessary element. I like wearing cute clothes and looking cute, probably not any different than how anyone feels to wear fashion that they enjoy. I also like that I can act as the character at a con or something and not feel embarrassed about it because no one can see my face (I'm the sort of person that can't sing or do voice impressions in front of people, too shy)

Everyone has different reasons to get into it. But in the grand scheme of things, Kigurumi came about as a stage performance method. From there, you have people that want to do it because they have an encasement fetish, because they are a crossdresser, because they are a masker, because they are a cosplayer, because they are a crossplayer, because they are an anime fan, because they like to be someone else, the list goes on and on.

To add, yes, for a lot of people it IS a fetish. Though a majority of them are just onlookers. I know tons of kigs who voice annoyance at all the creepers asking for fetish stuff during a cam session. But to say "how is it not a fetish?" kind of shows your narrow view on what people should be allowed to do for entertainment. Do you assume model train collectors are fetishists? Do you assume stage play enthusiasts live out their parts as a lifestyle? Kigurumi is a mix of art (the crafting of the mask), theater/costuming (the miming and acting of a character), cosplay (the costumes), and photography. To add some perspective about the "costuming" aspect: if you didn't know, many theme park mascots actually enjoy their work and take it very seriously. There's a method to that stuff.

The trans members of the community only make up part of the community, and even then they are some of the most interesting people.
