I played for survival when I first got into shooters, with the mindset that if I can't clear the game, I won't get a good score anyway. Then I started playing with a mix of scoring and survival, because learning purely survival strategies is detrimental to you in the long run, in my opinion (because you'll have to forget all that and relearn each stage with some proper strategies). And now I only play for score, because if I keep playing, I'll keep improving and get the clear eventually anyway.

Pic related. It's the first time I beat Akai Katana.

Comparing multi-player games and single players games to sumo wrestling and running is completely wrong. Sumo wrestling and running are pretty opposite of each other and require totally different skill sets. Also video games each individual game requires different skills, not just single player and multi-player. Just becuase you're good at starcraft 1 doesn't mean you'll be good in starcraft 2, but some skill does transfer. So individual game skill is more important than "lol multiplayer vs. singleplayer" cause in the end it doesn't matter. Are you a professional gamer? Being number one is very difficult as the professional gamer environment is harsh to make a living off of and only the best can participate. Doesn't mean you can't be good. It's not like your mentality makes you a better gamer either. The guy who plays every saturday may be better than the person who "wants to be number 1". What matters in the end is your actual skill level rather than mentality. So you can play a variety of games and still enjoy them but have a speciality in one. Playing for score will always require more skill than playing for survival. This IS simple fact: playing for survival is nothing more than playing to beat a static challenge. Playing competitively for score requires serious skills and creative thinking to get the edge over other players.

You're kind of missing the point of the op. It's not if you can't, it's if you don't. Even the worst player can play for score and it's the attitude of someone who doesn't that makes them a horrible secondary, not their skill level.

Even playing for score has a finite field of success. When the game is programmed to throw these many enemies at you and give you those many challenges to get score out of, that is, if it doesn't go on forever, you're just trying to beat a static challenge set even higher than where it's supposed to be.

I mean, sure, trying to compete with another person and get some enjoyment out of it is fine, but when you're exhausting every possible opportunity of scoring, when you're milking the game out with such zeal, there's something wrong going on.

Of course, someone is bound to call me a filthy casual now, bu that's because for them there is no such thing as a golden mean.

>> No.7784287

Sure, everyone who has at least completed Normal mode on Touhou can perform much better, on harder modes.
But why would most people do that if it means exerting yourself so far you only see completing the game or merely scoring as a chore?

Point is, scorefags decide to put that much effort because they find it pleasurable. Is it autistic behaviour? E-peen stroking? Pure dedication to something they love? Call it whatever you like. If you force people who play for score to just complete an easy game and leave it there, they won't find it fun. Same goes for the casuals.
