Thought about maybe getting this kind of doll as a start, since HLJ sells them (buy most of my stuff from them). Looks cute and they're not VERY expensive, compared to getting dolls from japanese auctions.

I have a VOLKS Dollfie Dream. They're not terribly expensive for their size, I only paid $200 for her body and $40 for the head I wanted. Got accessories (wig/eyes/etc) on eBay and made her outfits myself. She was a good investment. She's a first edition body that's no longer sold, so her value is going up, despite being on the lower end of 1/3 sized dolls because she's made of vinyl instead of resin. She's more durable than resin dolls anyway and she can hold things easily without me having to worry about breaking her hands.

If you're looking for something smaller, there's the VOLKS "Image Character" dolls. They're around the same size as figures, but posable. Almost all of them are chibi/loli though.

VOLKS also makes dolls that are like.. figure-barbies. You can look into these and the others I mentioned on the VOLKS website-
