So here I am, lurking /a/ and /jp/ and the TV is on. What was airing, really made me think, it was a soccer game, but it was in Chinese. The Chinese language is probably the shittiest, ugliest sounding language I've ever heard, the commentators were going "swa chon zan chi", fucking pig disgusting.

The Japanese language on the other hand, is beautiful. When I watch anime and j-dramas, I put the volume to high, because it so fucking beautiful.

So how did the Japanese language become so beautiful, while the Chinese language became
so ugly?

49.1% of Japanese words are Chinese based loan words

>> No.778015

Chinese languages are tonal, meaning that the same word can be interpreted differently based on what tone you pronounce it in. There's high tone, low tone, rising tone, and low-high-low tone.

To English speakers, this is different entirely from our syllabic emphasis speech. Words are pronounced with emphasis on a particular syllable.

Japanese sounds slightly more natural to us because they speak with a high/low syllable pitch. To us, the "high" syllables sound a little like syllabic emphasis, even though Japanese is spoken without emphasis on any syllables.
