The body is more flexible but not worth the cost of aquiring one. I don't think once I've place one of my DDS's into a pose that could only exclusively be done by a DDS body.

Why are you (or the camera man) shooting at iso 400 with a point and shoot, in daylight anyway?

Just use a tripod, and iso 100 with a slow shutter speed instead.

Just testing the camera's limits and its RAW capabilities. As you can see my 5D is in some of the shots hence I don't always shoot with it. (check the filenames if you want to see which was taken with which)

>, in daylight anyway
Also, if you look closely the blinds are closed and the room is lit only by CFLs.

Additionally, there are plenty of ISO100 tripod shots with tight apertures if you were paying attention.

so let me clarify. I'm testing the limits of a lesser (ten year old) DSLR to satisfy my own curiousity. It obviously doesn't do well at mid-grade ISOs.

>Just use a tripod, and iso 100 with a slow shutter speed instead.
that why torture yourself?
it's the 21st century. there are full-frame DSLRs that shoot at ISO soeeds of at least 3200 and higher without noise problems.

Manual mode:
-ISO100
-F/22
-8 sec exposure
-16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens, zoomed out to 16mm
-mirror was locked up to reduce camera shake
-shutter was executed with timer
-camera sat flat on the desktop

Photoshop was used only to:
-remove the colorcast of the tungsten lights (RAW processing) by tweaking the color temp

Interesting choice of camera for a first camera. I poked through the manual and it looks like it has a lot of available options for you to exercise once you either tire or become dissatisfied with Olympus's presets and shooting guide which is good because it extends the life of the camera. The typical evolution of camera ownership is buy a pont-and-shoot then DSLR but this allows you to extend the life of the camera in your possession, especially since you can change the lens.

In addition to what the other poster suggested about using the rule of thirds (there are more guidelines to composition but that will get you started) I encourage you to:

- explore shooting in the A and S modes to understand what happens when you shoot based on a chosen aperture or shutter speed, then explore using M mode when both are at your control.
- understand exposure and ISO speeds and how these relate to using M mode to your advantage

tl;dr, congrats on the camera, now exploit it, snap away!

I'll definitely need to learn how to tweak a photograph like that. Do you just do it by eye? I found that the camera has a histogram display, where it shows graphs relating to the colors in the image, but I have no idea what it is for.

I've been ignoring good lighting with the new camera, since it can actually take non-blurry photographs without extra lighting. My old point and shoot takes blurry photographs unless I add lots of extra light. Time to break out the white cardboard backdrop and take more pictures.

I've read through most of the manual, and learned how to tweak all of the various settings. I don't have a good mental grasp of some things yet, most notably aperture. But I'm learning, and taking lots of pictures just to see what things do. Thanks for the link.

Maybe a professional can get it right in one shot. For the rest of us, there's photoshop.

Like >>7682715 said, look into saving your files as RAW+JPG instead of just jpeg. It's a bit more space intensive but flash memory is cheap. Since RAW files are in plain words, raw sensor data, it's pliability is more powerful than modifying a compressed image such as jpeg. In a nutshell it's like working in a digital darkroom and your photos can be adjusted so they look better as if they were shot that way.

e.g. a photo taken in a poorly lit room. a single cfl and not a lot of light to go around with. This was shot at ISO800 with the white balance set to "auto." "According to the camera" the exposure was just fine with the wide aperture and slow shutter speed I selected. but the results are pretty dismal as you can see. With the raw photo, a couple taps of the sliders and the whites are now balanced and the limes look more ... limey. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

This one was a challenge. Kanade's arms aren't anywhere near strong enough to hold the bottle, so I had to pile up some books underneath to hold most of the weight.

I didn't even notice the arm until I reviewed the pictures on my computer. I immediately went back and tried to recreate the shot, but I knocked Chisa over, and couldn't get it just right. This was literally the last shot of the set, before I tried to recreate the scene. I was getting tired and not paying as much attention. In any case, I was taking pictures for practice and I learned something. Mission accomplished. :)

This shot shows what else was going on. I was trying to make it look like Kanade was offering dessert for the two of us. After I'd taken a few shots of her solo, I decided to have Chisa jump up and join the scene.

I did get a similar shot without the arm. I just don't like it quite as much.

The advice provided here has really helped out a lot. I've been using the rule of thirds and then doing minimal postprocessing (with the GIMP) to my photographs. The landscape photos I took during my hike this morning are better than any I've ever taken before.

That photo reminds me, there's another concept to photography called depth of field,

check out:
http://www.shortcourses.com/tabletop/lighting1-4.html
in short, since Chisa and Kanade are different distances from the camera and your DOF was narrow, one was out of focus. By increasing the aperture value it's possible to get them both into focus.

e.g. in the photo attached the hands were about 1/3 the total distance closer to the camera than the faces. if I shot at a wide open F2 one or the other would have been blurred. but with the Aperture set to 22 i was able to capture it all without compromises.

Here's an interesting shot:

I cranked the ISO down to 100, and checked the exposure by turning on all the lights and firing the flash once. Once I got the exposure to a satisfactory setting I turned off the lights so the only light in the room was bleeding through the blinds. Then, I opened the shutter for ten seconds while I manually fired the flash at the ceiling, the floor, and the walls to each of my sides to "paint" the dolls with reflected light. Now the image looks a little less "sterile" than many of my other photos.

The challenge was finding an aperture that would allow for some depth but avoid overexposure in 5 flashes or less. (In hindsight I could have used the ISO expansion feature to enable ISO 50)

Before you corrected your statement, you have to realize that this comes off as snarky:
>"Do you even take them outside?"
pair that with sage and it's no longer a polite or neutral non-bump. It now comes across as abrasive.

But since you corrected your post I'll respond in kind. I probably won't ever take them outside. I live in an urban area and know too many people. Most parks are populated and are in street view. In the rare chance noone's at the park, you can't go a minute without a car passing by. A trip to the countryside would be nice but that's something I would have to plan for someday

I find it so depressing that Volks has not released the DDS yet. I keep hoping they will in time for Christmas. It would make sense retail-wise, but Volks doesn't really play with market rules like that, they do whatever the fuck they want. Sigh! I really like the DDS body. And the DDIII body. I want to buy one for my girl, but I don't think it's worth buying one now when upgrades have already previewed.

This is my DD03 girl. It's a crummy pic, I'm sorry, it's not my camera.

If anyone has even the slightest of interest, I suggest they jump on it. This is only the second time they made a second release of any doll with Alna being the first. It doesn't happen often, but it seems they're somewhat responding to demand.

I'm not sure what to use for backgrounds in lots of my shots. I've been using a couple leftover black posterboards. They're a bit dirty from sitting under my couch forever.

And the posterboards are too small to make shooting convenient. I have to keep repositioning them. You can see that I got sloppy in this shot.

This picture is straight out of the camera, no other postprocessing applied. For most other pictures, the "auto white balance" helps a lot. The "auto color enhance" tool is hit or miss; sometimes it makes things too red.

I was playing with the exposure bias setting to help avoid some of the too bright white areas in Mio's blouse. Time to learn more.

I love the outfit!

This is a bit better. As the sun was going down, it finally started lighting the room better. I tried to use a white posterboard to help deflect some light towards the girls. It worked ok. I like the natural diffuse light more than artificial light.

I tried to give the impression that Mio was being shy, and Kanade was giving her a little push forwards to help out.

I don't actually have any Volks/Japanese dolls... I don't really like very many Super Dollifies. I do really love Dollfie Dreams though! But I like regular BJDs better so I don't know if I'll ever buy one.

So I'll share my Korean/Chinese BJDs instead!

Hujoo 12cm Baby Suve - ABS version with default faceup and a shitty wig. She was more of an impulse buy since she was only 45 dollars (25 if I had gotten her without faceup) but she's very cute and for the price, size and plastic I'm very impressed! My only qualm is that her head cap is pretty hard to get on and off... It's a peg system so I'm always afraid of breaking it. Over all though she's very posable.

He's really cute!

What kind of sculpt is he? I think I have a friend with the same doll... he looks very familiar.

I prefer the Korean dolls over Volks. It seems like a lot of Volks dolls just lack personality. There are some Super Dollfies though that I really want.

As far as male dolls... I don't know why but all of my favorites happen to be male. I like really soft, yet masculine historical dolls. (Dream doll = Soom Lazule)

Lately though I've been wanting a girl doll other than Milleflora, my Suve. I've been thinking of getting a Dear Doll Shabee (from Dollmore) to be Ezra's little sister. Her face is absolutely irrisitable.

Theres also Dollzone Aurora but I think I mostly want to get her because she comes with a cool hat... And then that Lusion Doll Dahlia... Is anyone in here familiar with her?

I love her but I don't think I'll ever buy one. 1.4k plus she's 80cm... Way too huge to have IMO. I think around 60cm is as far as I'll go.

I know, I have looked at the pictures on the Dollmore site so many times. I really want a Black Dahlia, but that SIZE... I have a 64cm Impldoll coming in the next while (so far my dolls are both 43cm) so we'll see how I like that size. There's rumour on Den of Angels that the next Lusion doll will be 120cm.
