Many people used to adore Rozen Maiden and its characters, but now you barely see such a thread on all of 4chan.

well yes it's been on the decline a little while ago, since a real new game hasn't been released in 2 years,
and every concept of touhou and every fanwork has been beaten to death two times over.
TD will probably be the last successful jumpstart and then it will die out to some other new popular franchise.

Also, when touhou burns out there will be a new japanese fad of some sort. Maybe some new VN series a la type-moon. Maybe another shmup. Maybe some new revolutionary concept, like something featuring customizable virtual waifus.

Comparing Touhou to another series doesn't work at all.

Touhou is more of a phenomena than just a game series, it's also different from most other series in that its creator lets people do whatever the hell they want with Touhou, any kind of derivative work, as long as it's not commercial and stays within the doujin market area.

Hell, it's even moving to over here's television, commercials containing Touhou general and a few cosplayers are appearing here, this place is Colombia by the way.

I feel like we're a little bit past Peak Touhou right now.

It's sorta already happening, there are days where you don't even see touhou threads on the front page.
But its not up to us I guess, as long as comikets keep churning out touhou doujinshi and games there will always be a part of it here.
Idolmaster being released for the region free ps3 might be one contender, or some other japanese boom. If not we'll just get by with general visual novels and more "weeaboo" games and mmo until a boom happens

The only was I'm seeing a possible Touhou death is when ZUN dies or gets too old to continue making Touhou games. Even then it'll last a few more years after

That's right, the only reason Rozen Maiden is not discussed here anymore is because everyone who gives a fuck migrated to another entire -chan.

There's also the whole debacle with Birz shitting on Peach-Pit and the subsequent deus ex machina halt to the manga and then subsequent alt timeline restart some months later when they started being published in young jump.

Until the anime gets a third season I wouldn't expect it's popularity to shoot back up--even then I can't say with any certainty that we'd be talking about in on 4chan nearly as often as we used to~desu

The complete replacement of every Touhou garage kit at WF by Madoka made it seem to me like touhou was on a big decline.

I don't even remember the names of 50% of the characters and I can only recall the plot of IN anymore. I know pretty much just the basics of the lore. It really is all about the nice pictures and music for me. Picture related, it's the best Touhou.

I think Touhou is just at the middle of the road. PC-98 were the start but failed. TH06-09 is the restart, the rule is set, the world is built. TH9.5-TH12 is the middle, new characters keep coming, more spinoffs, books, mangas. The end is when there are very few new characters for each titles, putting all characters in an ultimate title then farewell.

And then people will claim to make successors for Touhou with touhou characters but it will eventually end.

Anyways, I don't really know where I should start with normal manga. Should I read the official ones at first? And where do I even find them?

I think Touhou is actually growing and will continue to grow more and more, it's expanding to other countries and the more time it passes the more big-looking works are being produced and more references are appearing.

The only reason it isn't full mainstream (as in, anime/movies/commercial games etc.) is because ZUN doesn't want to, and that's respect-worthy right there. It shows he cares more about his daughters than money.

what kind of stories do you like?

I would reccomend 'inaba of the moon and inaba of the earth', an official manga featuring reisen as a main char. but you might find it too light-hearted.

The first thing will happen. Seriously, ZUN doesn't mind secondaries and fanon. At least from the interviews I've read, it seems like he cares more about Gensokyo as a shared universe (blacktewi.jpg, etc) than as a set-in-stone canon for the games. This is why I don't think he'll kill off characters or name a royal successor.
Also, he makes the games because he likes them, he has another job to make money. When ZUN finally goes to Gensokyo, the official series will still be a classic and the characters and music and everything else will live on in the remixes and doujins and fangames.

This is just the beginning.

The first one I read was "Silent Sinner in Blue" and I loved it. The characters make more sense to me after reading it. I would recommend reading "Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth" after SSiB.

You can only talk about one thing for so long. This goes for everything else as well.

Only if said subject matter has some sort of new content that is being made and no one cares about it still would you draw to that conclusion. I am not savvy with Rosen Maiden so I know very little about it but last time I checked I dont think anything new has come out from that.

People always get this impending feel of doom especially during the couple months between Reitaisai and Comiket since the amount of material produced slows down, which is true. This gets worse as the months approach August. But as soon as Zun introduces something new for people to expand upon, production increases again. I would have to wait until after the full Ten Desires is released to take a guess on the production potential. In my experience, Th11 sparked the greatest amount of productivity as compared to Th 10, then followed by Th 12.

I will enjoy older games. I don't really care about the community or how "mainstream" touhou is. Maybe at some point touhou games will become so shitty I won't even want to play them, but I don't think it's going to happen any time soon - and even then I can just listen to ZUN's music.
