He is, alot, better now though. But he also takes more time and is more organized overall. But at the same time, the speed difference isn't as big anymore.

-They are enthusiasts, as you say, so they're probably actually interested in giving people the game instead of working for epenis. Passion makes you go a long way.
-I think they have more than one translator working on it, you don't see it that often in the other groups because the translator wants to feel special and basically the incarnation of the whole group (like Ixrec who said "I am Amaterasu, the group is nothing without me" or something to that effect) or because the porn is beside him
-Blick Winkel at least proved himself to be a competent enough translator in the past, translating all kinds of shit people posted here on the fly
It probably won't be without a problem or two but I say they're heading down the right road.

If this isn't a one off thing, then I would be very inclined to agree.
I just don't think their estimates later, will look like their estimates now.

I might be pessimistic, but I think such a thing is to be expected from lack of experience, working with translating a VN as a project. Translation itself disregarded even.

I could expect the work to go on, but then take considerably longer time than "expected" at some point later forward.

In the end, both need eachother. Translation is absolutely worthless if you can't get it in the game. Hacking is absolutely worthless if you don't have any translation to put in the game.

Both are difficult. Both are time consuming. Neither camp should be dismissing the other, even as far as saying one is even slightly more difficult than the other. You have to remember there are a lot of translators, but the lack of hackers is one of the major reasons something won't get translated. Afterall, who is going to want to spend all that time translating something that can't even be released?

There is nothing to gain by making those assumptions and accusations, and all it does is devalue the hard worth these people put in to making such translations freely available to us.

I'm on the translator side (editor and TL checking nowadays to be exact) and what I've experienced is that it rarely takes hackers long to actually do anything, but they'll spend months making excuses to not do it. And even assuming that hacking would take two hours of work every day for a month, that's still a fraction of time that the translator is going to have to put into it.
Personally, there was a short doujin game I wanted to do and the script was even already extracted (as one long text dump, so not readable yet). It mainly just needed line splitting plus an inserter to change the fixed width strings to variable width. Every hacker I talked to said it'd be easy and take only an hour or two, but even after spending a month of asking them, none could be assed to even try, just keep saying they'll do it in a few days or on the weekend until I eventually gave up. It was frustrating and even insulting at times to be blown off for weeks. I know that's normal behavior for programmers, but I sure as hell am not going to kiss their asses for it.

>and even insulting at times to be blown off for weeks. I know that's normal behavior for programmers, but I sure as hell am not going to kiss their asses for it.
To be perfectly honest, it isn't as if that's unique to programmers.
Now no need to go Camp A vs Camp B in some kind of flame war, but it's simply that what you described is humanity in a nutshell, in general, so the camp doesn't matter.

I have similair stories to yours. Cracked open a bunch of minor mini games in Japanese back in the days, containing not much text at all. Some were nothing but interfaces, some others had some a bit of text leading up to a joke of sorts, or a twist. No matter the case it was something that could be translated really easily, but translators can never be assed to do anything, even if it doesn't require much work.

The answer to this I reckon, is that people in general, are bad at getting stuff done.

First I made videos of Suzuha, Faris, and Luka's endings. Then Antheon contacted me and said their group had extracted the nss.npa file, but couldn't repack it. I declined to help the project until repacking had been figured out.

Then Nagato contacted me and said he was almost done with his nipa2 tools. I introduced Nagato to the group. I only figured I'd stay long enough until a better translator joined in, but... stuff happened, and now I've singlehandedly translated about 40% of the game.
