Who cares about originality? Everything has been done before. It's cancer like you that is killing the video game industry with "innovation".

Innovation is the opposite of what is killing the video game industry. The problem is stagnation, which is why Call of Duty is now a yearly franchise cashcow.

The problem is, video game budgets are gigantic and they need to aim to sell a lot of copies to make money. Developers need to make sure their investors get a profit. Because of this, innovation isn't really something a company can afford to do because it carries a great amount of risk. Developers can only innovative, if they do at all, in small increments where the financial risk isn't too great. They innovate too much, the game could fail, and it's hard explaining to investors that your idea is really good if they don't have solid data that agrees with you. The emphasis on metrics, means of measuring things such as what guns a person uses or how much time they spend doing a certain action, in recent titles is also because of this, as investors collect data on what players like and then sell them games based on that data.

If a game is too innovative, or let me say, if a game strays too far from the norm, it's difficult to predict the sales on that game. The innovation could be completely amazing, or it could be a catastrophic failure that doesn't generate any revenue.

This is also why indie gaming is on the rise and it is the leading factor in sales in the indie scene. Because indie games aren't high budget AAA titles from a large developer, they can afford to innovate without having their funding pulled. In fact, indie games tend only to sale well if they truly innovate. There's a wave of shitty indie platformers that you've never heard of, but everyone knows games like Braid or Minecraft, both of which are substantially different from games that came before (you could argue differently for Minecraft based on Infiniminer, but I don't really care.)

In short, innovation is what we need, stagnation is what we have.

Innovation IS what's killing gaming. The two biggest "innovations" this gen are pure, concentrated cancer: Motion controls and grind-a-thon weapon unlocks in multiplayer FPS. And as bad as motion controls are, the latter is particularly offensive because it's crippled an entire genre from a competitive standpoint. Seriously, the only competitive FPS worth playing is a fucking browser game.

Weapon unlocks in shooters aren't innovation-- it's merely applying an old idea to a different genre.
