So a thread or two ago, I got my UBW Rin in and posted some pictures, and said something about having a crappy camera and having to try pretty hard to take non-shitty pictures. UPS knocked on the door today, and delivered something for my younger sister - one of those hipster Nikon cameras that she absolutely has no legitimate use for considering the price. Fine by me, now I can take hipster myfigurecollection pictures too! Or at least some good blog quality ones, if I can figure out some decent resizing methods and not using MSPaint. But, pic related, was just fooling around with it and it looks miles better than anything I've taken before.

As another anon mentioned, DSLRs aren't hipster, you might be able to get away with calling SLRs hipster because they aren't "mainstream" anymore. Also, that fitted hat better not be yours.

Anyways, personally I've got a Cannon Rebel T1i. I really should take some pictures of figures but my collection is fairly small, the only ones that I would take pics of im sure there are already thousands of pics on mfc of. Maybe next time a new figure comes in the mail for me.

I can't speak for anything outside of D/SLRs. And with any SLR it's not so much about the camera as the lenses. For general photography on a DX/APS-C sized sensor (just about every body sold today save the highest-tier pro models) I'd suggest 2-3 zooms covering a focal lengths from about 20 to 200mm. You can get good shots of figures with those provided you can find the light.

For lighting figure shots, I get by with a pair of manual flashes on remote radio triggers. Using the built in flash tends to look bland and cause lots of washout since it's so close to the lens.

Consider buying a used or refurbished camera body from the last generation (e.g. Nikon D3000 vs the D3100, Pentax K-x vs the K-r) since they'll probably be somewhat cheaper.

Personally I'm a Pentax shooter, which isn't a major manufacturer. I'm somewhat familiar with Nikon's lineup due to following froknowsphoto.com (suggested, by the way). I know nothing about the other manufacturers.

Im no pro but heres my advice
>paints
pretty much any model paint as long as its acrylic. That way you can water it down nicely.
>brushes
To be honest I don't recommend using brushes. personaly I use an airbrush to paint figures and a needle to paint the eyes. For painting, I always seem to get brush lines, no matter how much or little I water down the paint. I know, I suck with a brush but with an airbrush you can get pretty much flawless results much easier than with a brush.

Also, don't forget to remove the old paint or if it is a GK to remove any release agent residue left on the figure from the molding stage. You can't really see it but it basically looks shiny. 95% of companies don't remove it so you have to. Google a guide if you are unsure of what to use. Personally, I use simply green (cleaning liquid) to wash the residue off and to remove paint from figures. It works fine and isn't too powerful that it damages/warps the pvc, plastic, ect that the figure is made out of. Im pretty sure using regular soap and an old toothbrush or similar would work fine. No matter the method you don't want that release agent residue left on the figure. If left on it will cause paints not to adhere well.

How is it better?
It's maybe better for cataloging if you work with huge amount of photos. Otherwise there's no point to use some extra soft if you can do what you want in Photoshop.

I felt the same way until I tried lightroom, but maybe that's because I never bothered to use bridge.

Assuming you shoot raw, making white balance, color and exposure adjustments is a lot faster, along with being able to apply batch lens correction and custom camera profile settings. If you usually just work with a few files at a time or work with jpgs though, I can see lightroom being a lot less useful to downright redundant. After adding lightroom to my workflow though, it'd be a pain in the ass to go without it.

My advice. First of all, you probably want a dual action airbrush. Dual action meaning one control for air another for paint. Makes work a lot easier. I would say to look online for airbrushes, "art stores" usually markup 2x what online stores do. As for paints, any acrylic paints will work, just watered down to the consistency of 2% milk or less. Of course cheap quality paints wont always look nice. Air compressors work fine (i got a cheap one for $40) so do the air cans but air cans don't have a constant pressure and they cost quite a bit over time. Lastly, to cover up areas, you can use tape. I know theres this stuff (can't remember name sorry) that is applied to the area and when you are done painting you take it off, kinda like if painters tape and clay had a mutant baby.

>> No.7587816

>>7587704
I've always heard "double action" refer to an airbrush where both air pressure and paint flow are controlled by manipulating a single control, usually a button. Pushing in/out controls air, pulling it forwards/back controls paint. Single action has separate controls, and the button only controls the air.

Regarding air compressors, after running for awhile (guess around 20-30 minutes of constant use) they will start to spit out gobs of moisture occasionally, which will wreck your paint job. Either get your painting done in lots of short sessions or look into moisture traps.

I'd also suggest a spray booth to capture overspray unless you want it coating everything nearby with enough use.

>> No.7587906

>>7587816
personally I just made a cheap cardboard spray booth. Also, you "should" have a mask to keep particles from entering your lungs but I don't care enough about life to bother. For air compressors, my 3 gallon one seems to run well enough that it doesn't spot out moisture, maybe if it is an airbrush compressor with a small tank it would.

My experience with single action is that it usually is a button that controls the amount of air but there is no control for paint. Yeah, your description of dual action does sound more correct. I say two controls only because there are technically two mechanisms that control it but they are connected to the same lever/button.

Yeah, that's why i'm opting to hand-paint my first one with layers of severely thinned paints and see how terrible it looks before i get an airbrush. What material is it? If its resin it could have gotten slightly warped in shipping, which can of course be fixed.

None the less just remember these parts are cast meaning there could occur a slight flaw. Personally for all seems inbetween parts, I sand it down then fill it in with some modeling putty. Specifically, Kneadatite (GW renames it as green stuff) but pretty much any type works.

Im considering doing this for the Okuu GK, for the "elephant's foot", remaking that as I see fit but made into two parts, that way it could be attached via magnet and removed at any time. Also im planning on making the atom around her left foot. The GK also doesn't have a cape for her so Im just going to take some white cloth and use some iron-on inkjet transfer paper to transfer her cape pattern onto it.

So I just heard on the news that Canada post is mainly only delivering "consumer mail" which is apparently just letters and magazines and such. "Corporate mail" such as packages and parcels is either not being delivered in areas or is not a priority. Other areas may or may not be different.

I say to hell with that bullshit. I payed plenty to get my packages shipped so I have all the same expectations to have gotten my packages within a reasonable time. Why must I (and others) continue to wait.....They say it will be about another week for services to return to normal.... im doubtful about that but all I can really do is hope so.

>>7589182

If by chance the part is warped then make sure you don't warp it any more. Hot water does work fine, I'd be a bit worried about using a heat gun. This is all assuming the part is warped. Have you had any luck getting it together? Also, do you paint before building or build then paint?

No they're not-well, not within that range of exceptions. Maybe 1/7ths but frankly there aren't that many animu figures that would push the equivalent of 210cm.

Bottom end (without stands) is like 16cm standing straight for lolis which is pretty close to the overall height of a tall figma, and somewhere in the area of 19cm would be typical for mature characters. Less upright poses are less, flying poses and things can be more. 30cm probably means you have a base like half the height of the character.

This entirely ignores the fact you tried to answer his question by giving him the information he already had.

I like Bakemonogatari, I like Hitagi and I like this figure more than GSC's. But still that's not enough to order it even if I already ordered Tsubasa by Alter. Something is wrong. Probably this animu wasn't that important to me and the characters from aren't that remarkable.

Her face looks off. I personally have this Mayoi preordered, who will serve as the center piece for my figmas.

So many poorfags on mfc crying for a chua churam rerelease. Good thing Alter doesn't have a re-release habit like Koto. Their tears feed me.

That same gk was displayed last year. It was the one that gave me hope that GSC or Alter would take up Chu x Chu Idol again.

But alas, no luck.

I think my skirt problems are solved now that i've properly pinned & puttied (w/ kneadatite as per your suggestion, works awesome, thanks!). Before I just tried using a lot of epoxy to fill the gaps and it did not work out.
My plan is to assemble the things i can that are going to be painted the same color before painting, and assemble everything else after painting.

i joined in for the california group
each order is max 5 so it'd be 3000 yen each, flat 2000 yen for shipping (so 400 yen per person if each bought 1), then some more for the domestic shipping. i'm going to estimate it is $5.50 each (1-2 pound package) for priority mail for the california shipments. at the moment 3400 yen is $42 so alltold we're looking at about $50 a head including shipping and PayPal fees.
