I don't think you need to extract the xpi, it should be right there in the extension folder. The hard part for him would be to guess which of the strings is the one for 4watch/4chanX
The string to look for inside the install.rdf is "maxVersion"

Or even easier, install Nightly Tester Tools and force compatibility. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nightly-tester-tools/
It does the same, but without the mucking around the files.
