actually, it's kind of an interesting split. You've got the fetish-centered people, who often focus on encasement, zentai, tight and confining clothes, crossdressing, etc. Then you have the people who love cosplaying, performing, costume making, photography, and anime. (and then some people in the middle)

I remember at the Otakon panel one year, a journalist came in wanting to do a report on encasement fetishes, but came out with a totally different view on the hobby. Not that one way or the other is better or worse, but it's a shame to see the benign side under-represented here, and having the "seedy" aspect of it being the only thing shown to people here on /jp/. It'd be like if you only showed cosplay porn to someone who had no idea what cosplay was.

I wonder if /cgl/ would work better for costuming discussion? They'd probably be more helpful for wig-styling tips and all that, now that I think about it. Some newer kigs have no idea wtf they are doing with hair.

- Hair needs work. Don't know anything about hair styling? (probably because you are an average male) Ask a friend. Look up tutorials online. there's plenty of information. That whole wig could use a do-over really.

- Is that a photo taken inside, with a flash, and nothing more? Seriously, set up a photo area! Don't use the camera's flash. light the space with a few good bulbs and look up basic photographic techniques! Even a simple 3-point setup would VASTLY improve an image taken with a point-and-shoot. This shit takes like two minutes to learn. Invest in a nice camera anyway, or find a photographer.
This may just be a photo for fun, but it looks like you're trying to show off that dress, and this kinda photo is terrible for that.
The bad lighting highlights the discoloration of the body suit compared to the mask, especially.

- That pose, DO SOMETHING! Why are you just standing there like you're waiting for someone to paint your portrait? You want to look cute right? Pose cute! Posing and body language are SO important to this sorta thing. Play your character! No one cares about some chump in a mask just standing there, you have to really sell it.

- I can't tell if your neck is too low or if the mask is too low set. Try to adjust the padding so the mask sits as close up to your chin as possible. A low head makes any pose look hunched and ugly.

Obviously I'd be nicer if I wasn't giving tips anonymously, but hey. If the japanese can keep a good code of quality, so can we.

Seriously. Think of it this way: ever had long hair? Anyone you know? How often did you comb it? Yeah that's right, every day, probably more than once. Just walking around messes it up.

I know one could argue that it's just for fun, a personal thing, etc... but if you're going to exhibit yourself and your hobby, shouldn't you do it to the best of your ability? I don't know about everyone, but I'd want to take every measure to ensure I wasn't embarrassing myself. Wearing an anime mask. In girl's clothing. By myself.

Unfortunately, learning about kigurumi through /jp/ is like learning about anime through visual novels and hentai doujinshi.
It's first and foremost a cosplay and stage acting deal. When I say stage acting, I mean the professional side of kigurumi is costumed stage shows (like sailor moon and pretty cure). Otherwise, it's a damn fine way for anyone of any age or gender to cosplay exactly the character they want to cosplay. It's also part about the costumes, photography, meetups, conventions, all that jazz.

Yeah, some guys just want to be the little girl and there's all sorta of zentai (full body tights) fetishes out there, but there's a "dark" side to everything.

Think of it like dressing as closely as possible to the character meant to be represented. There's so many reasons people could want to do this though. Just consider something other than fetishes and "sickos" for a moment. There's definitely a powerful thing about completely hiding your normal self and going out as an anime character to a convention.
