I just started playing Mana Khemia 2, and it's a pretty good game, improved on a lot of stuff from the first one. But the thing is, I'm finding the characters so far to be kind of unlikeable. On car rides, bus trips, anywhere outside of home (hahaha outside) it's nice to just pull out the PSP and jump into a game for a bit to pass the time. Even at home sometimes I just don't feel like booting up the console or posting on /jp/ and would rather pull out the PSP for a few hours.

You're not supposed to flipsphere the last boss. Purge to level 3 and use that instead. The magic used during the last boss is different compared to your normal magic and is supposed to be your feelings used against the boss which is why there's different stages of the fight as Ar Ciel begins to accept you. Using a flipsphere changes your magic from these 'feelings' to their generic flipsphere attack which isn't that effective against the boss, I believe, just like physical attacks.

Kept hammering the enemies to build up purge, purged to level 3 (for faster burst and bonuses), then sat back and let the burst bar build up to around 200000% before Flipsphere'ing. Rinse and repeat four times for the four stages of the boss.

AT2 Plot Q&A:
Firstly thanks for those who answered my questions from the previous thread, you guys are awesome. I have some more questions but first, just in case anybody's interested, I'll answer some of my own questions as I found the answers to those as I'm going through my 2nd playthrough on Cloche's path:

>Who released Frelia after the group saw her in Kanakana pier?
Chester did, while capturing the group at the same time.

>How come Frelia agrees to sing Hibernation but then stopped when Luca called to her and then even turned to try and stop sublimation (when sublimation pretty much equals hibernation)?
This was suggested by another anon and he's right: Frelia was being hacked by infel. There's a scene when Frelia started singing showing infel being overjoyed that she finally managed to connect herself to ar tonelico and found Goro (who holds the key to the D-Cellophane connected to Frelia). After Hibernation stopped Frelia also said that she feels like somebody is going through her heart from the inside. There's also a possibility Infel's hacking is what causing Frelia to lose power (or at least more rapidly) which causes the rim to start falling off as Frelia also complained that the weird feeling inside her made her feel powerless.

And now for the questions (some are new, some unanswered fro previous thread):

How come Luca sometimes "explodes" when she's in danger/sad? (e.g. when Reisha got hit by a divine army robot or when luca and cloche almost got executed)

What's Lakra's power? There's a scene where Cocona said the exact same things as Lakra, is that part of Lakra's power (controlling IPDs?)? Or is that caused by something unique to Cocona?

What's Laude doing in Metafalls anyway? Is he the one causing the rim to fall apart according to which parts have the most historical records in them or is it really Infel's hacking?

>> No.7525982

>>7525968
I really, really think you should just play the game and keep answering them yourself. Everything you've asked both here and in the other thread has common-sensically been answered in game. There is no need to ask us about things the game spoonfeeds you.

Luca "explodes" due to her link with Frelia. Basically, she's channeling the goddess' power.

Laude is trying to score a Heart of Gaea for the Archia Think Tank, an organization you encounter in AT3. I forget what he intended to do with it from here. Infel is the one who was trying to get rid of the historical records, though.

Cocona was out of the Ar tonelico's broadcast range for most of the game so she'll have just been a 'normal' girl and wouldn't have exhibited reyvateil characteristics. That was rather fortunate since it did mean she didn't need life extending agent while on the third tower both when it came to the whole discomfort thing in administering it and secondly because in general, the third tower was hostile as heck to 3rd gen reyvateils. On a side note, Croix does administer the agent to her while she was on Metafalss.

Nobody sells it here nowadays. Whenever I ask stores for the game, they say it's 'out of stock' and 'they don't know if it will be available in the future'., I looked around online and it will cost me USD 200-250 with shipping and customs. I don't want to spend that much on the game.

Luca has to go up against one of the sluttiest reyvateils in Ar Ciel who just happened to have a lead because she was praying on Croix's innocence. But you know what? Cloche is still a whore. I got discouraged because I was having issues with my conversion script, but it's pretty much fixed for recent issues, so I should be back to somewhat more regular updates, modulo unexpected distractions. I'll be out this weekend, but aside from that I'll be trying to catch up on back issues.

I went back and did Hama's Dojo for issue 88 tonight (plus added a bunch of poll tables for old Survey Brigades, but that's less interesting).

It's certainly not my favorite hymn by a long shot, but I appreciate that they decided to do something crazy and different for that one. It's that same desire that gave us DESPEDIA and CUTYPUMP.

And you have to admit, it was pretty funny for them to build up the "OH SHIT HYMN INCOMING THINGS ARE GONNA GETEPIC" feeling only to lead into a cutsey happy song. Though it would have been a *hell* of a lot funnier if the normal battle music wasn't also very cutsey and happy (seriously, I toally love the idea behind the AT3 normal battle music, but in practice the music it produces isn't all that good compared to the other games' battle music.)

AT3's music on the whole was like that too, in my opinion. A bit too much experimentation and different ideas drawing back on the solid, strong hits the songs in the first two games were. While the soundtrack is definitely good, I would have to unfortunately rank it as my least favourite AT soundtrack.

I respect your opinions, good sirs, but please note the "'waste'" I put. I honestly don't mind the song, it's decent and all but.. it's just not the same. There's a limited number of tracks for Akiko Shikata to perform and what could have been an orgasmic track like Arphage turns out to be EXEC_EP=NOVA/. which makes me sad. I still utterly detest Saki though.

Assuming they're not used then you'd be extremely silly not to, to be honest. AT3 and Neptunia average around £30-40 still so you're saving quite a lot of money in that regard. Once your done with Neptunia you can always just sell it for £25-30 if you don't like it.

You thought it was bad NIS America has less than ten employees? Apparently Gust, the company in Japan that actually makes all these games, has less than 15 employees themselves.

>> No.7557182

>>7557088
I'm not sure what to think about that.

My impressions after reading the Atelier Chronicles staff interviews were that there were a fair number of people. Certainly not in the hundreds but I would had thought they had more than just 15.

If that is the case that they only have ~15 permanent staff, hats off to them for producing such good games over the years.

>> No.7557554

>>7557088

The reason Gust only has 15 employees is that they sub-contract everything. For example, Mel is not a permanent Gust employee - I'm not even sure Ken Nakagawa is. They are using Sony's sample PS3 PhyreEngine graphics engine, which is one of the reason the games have such graphical deficiencies.

The core of a lot of game studios is very small, and they only hire part-time/contractors when a game is moving from prototype to production. Far more than 15 people work on each Gust title.

The kind of giant studios you read about in gaming "journalism" either need to produce massive hit after massive hit, or are owned by a publisher.

>>7557554
Yeah, indeed, they do outsource a whole lot of things (I mean, just look at the credits at the end of each GUST game), however, that's just for things like artwork and perhaps animations. I don't think Ken Nakagawa isn't a permanent GUST employee- I mean, he -is- part of the GUST Sound Team for a reason.

Not to mention the work such as programming, storyline and gameplay is usually handled in-house, which means that, yes, those 15 people usually take most of the work. Not to say that having a small team is bad at all- it allows GUST to stay alive with small, self-published projects and, usually, the whole staff remains more connected thanks to that.

7558529

It's fairly interesting to read up on why GUST actually breaks up the Atelier 'franchise' into self-contained sub-series. It helps them to achieve both a continuity of the series as a whole, and allows them to experiment and play around with new ideas without having to keep the baggage of past incarnations.

>>7557554
Mel was approached to do the character artwork for the Arland series primarily because his artwork appeals to both male and female demographics. Believe it or not, the Atelier series actually has a sizable female fanbase and seeing how the Arland series, was supposed to go back to the roots of the Atelier series gameplay, it was deemed to be important that the game needs to appeal to both demographics. The MC was even proposed to be a male, but was left as a female lead as the Atelier series started off with female leads.

Even though they are using the sample 3D engine for the Arland series, GUST has made a pretty impressive first attempt with 3D graphics with Rorona. With Totori and Meruru's improvements and solidification of translating 2D artwork into 3D models, I honestly can't fault the visuals. Sure, it's no hyper realistic graphics with plenty of lighting and other effects, but it does the job very well without suffering from the flaws in attempting to build your own engine from scratch with insufficient resources such as poor frame rate optimisations or animation bugs etc...
