What you need to make a visual novel is to:

-> Be able to program or atleast be about to use a vn engine.
-> Music/Sound effects.
-> Be able to write a decent story
-> Art.

I suppose you can do it without graphics but it'd only really work as a "visual" novel, if has something to look at and hear otherwise you might as well publish a book.

The reason why people post these threads is because either they lack the ability to do one of the above or cannot do any of the above. I'd love to write a visual novel but I have no aptitude for art or music, meaning making a visual novel on my own is no-go.

and very few people will draw or create music without some reward, otherwise boredom hits them, and those that will do it for free, want to be able to have creative input, leading to conflicts.

Basically it'd be pretty rare that /jp/ unless someone has alot of skill and just needs an artist and can find that art or whatever skill they lack and can keep the project going.

Story:

Could this ragged girl with brindled lugs have spoken like we do she would have called herself a wolf, but she cannot speak although she howls because she is lonely - yet 'howl' is not the right word for it , since she is young enough to make the noise that pups do, bubbling, delicious, like that of a panful of fat on the fire. Sometimes the sharp ears of her foster kindred hear her across the irreparable gulf of absence; they answer her from a faraway pine forest and the bald mountain rim. Their counterpoint crosses and criss-crosses the night sky; they are trying to talk to her but they cannot do so because she does not know their language even if she knows how to use it for she is not a wolf herself, although suckled by wolves.

her panting tongue hangs out, her red lips are thick and fresh. her legs long, lean and muscular. her elbows, hands and knees are thickly callused because she always runs on all fours. she never walks; she trots or gallops. her pace is not our pace.

I'm working on a VN script right now. I'm planning on using photographs for backgrounds and per-existing music and sfx, and my goal is to take the finished script and media files and use Renpy to create a kind of story-board mock-up VN, with sketches and notes in place of the character sprites and cgs, and then release it along with the request for help with art, programming etc.

I think this is the best method for writers to take if they want to get a team together to work on a VN. This way all the writing, direction etc. is already pretty much done, so people can get an idea of what kind of work the end product is going to be. And the artists know the writefag isn't as likely to drop out on them, having already demonstrated the willingness to put so much effort into the project.

By taking the initiative and doing the bulk of the work upfront I think writers stand a greater chance of attracting dedicated people to help make a VN. Even if you don't pick out the background or the music or the sfx, at least have a rough draft of the script completed for people to read.

The Crimson Rider.

She waved goodbye to Tom, turning away from him she smirked, “what a dolt”, and pulled up the zip on the leather bike jacket that she wore tightly, brushing away her light brown hair from her face using her gloved hands.

Her bike was parked not far down the street, she preferred her bike to any other mode of transport. Of course it would be smarter and a hell of a lot cheaper to take public transport around to meet her contacts, not to mention, so much more less traceable, but she didn't care, she figured that if she gonna do these jobs, why not do them with style, and the bike gave that style, the way it purred into existence at the turn of ignition and how the light reflected back off its cold red surface, she loved it, it was her trademark, what

The silver of her gun in its holster tinted slight yellow by the orange glow of the street lights that broke the total darkness; the gun moved with a clink against her loose belt with every step she made as she approached the red bike, climbing up onto it, she smiled imagining Graham's voice “Safety! you ought be wearing a helmet when you ride that damned bike of yours” she never wore a helmet, taking pleasure from the feel of the wind as it whipping past her face. She turned the keys into initiation, and with an almighty roar the bike sprang to life, she revved it up and sped off into the darkness in a cloud of exhaust fumes.

She checked her wrist watch, 6 o'clock, an hour till the next meeting with a more interesting client...

First part of the Visual Novel i've been writing, Its not the final draft so grammar, spelling or actual description isn't the best it could be.

Have you ever browsed Jamendo? Some of the music up there sounds pretty good. A good deal better than whatever they were using in Higurashi, at least.

I'm not picking on your or anyone else's ability, I'm only speaking statistically. I guess my point is something like this. When someone says I can write or draw, they're probably shit. Quality artists are roughly equally as rare as quality writers. But when people actually have to put their stuff on display, it's just very easy for someone to point and say 'that's a stick figure', and much more difficult for someone to point and say 'that's shitty writing'. So shitty writers don't get dissuaded as effectively as shitty artists and appear more common, but the average person who draws recreationally is just as shit as the average person who writes recreationally, we just don't see it. Consequently, quality artists appear much more rare relative to writers than they actually are.

I know, lets make a VN about a suicidal guy who becomes homeless who ends up living in a warehouse with some sort of nun type person!

Great idea, right?

Studio Nihi's entire development team was recruited from /jp/, but I don't know if that makes it /jp/'s official attempt at a full scale visual novel or not.

I tried getting artists from various sources, and they all bailed on the game after begging for money. The current artist from /jp/ does work that is 100x better and for free.

I agree with this person. In order to get an artist on board, a writer has to prove hes serious. Same for an artist.

Either way, the bottom line is atleast one person on your team must have both skill and ambition to make your dreams a reality. And both of those qualities are nigh impossible to find together in one person on /jp/. Let alone 4chan.

>> No.7446839

Actually no we can't. /jp/'s taste in VNs isn't great. Anything made by this board would be an attempt to follow the herd as best it can. Not try new things or try to revolutionize the medium.

Who did your music? Or is the stuff posted on January out of date as well, because that'd be a shame.

>> No.7447541

>>7447378
The music was done by two different musicians, one I recruited from /jp/ named zxii. He's been busy with real life stuff, but did all the music we'd need to cover his short absence.

Yeah, the website still has all the artwork of our old artist (who dropped the project after demanding money to continue work). Our current artist recruited from /jp/ is much more mature and talented as you can see from the screenshot I posted earlier. I think I'll leave the website to fallow until we are ready to release a preview, it'll be more exciting that way.

I'm currently making a short VN with my fiancee, and even though it's short it will require a shit ton of work. Organizing projects that need a lot of work and will take a long time.. won't exactly work if you want people from 4chan, seeing as nearly everyone on here is lazy and/or just joined the project for shits and giggles.

/jp/ is going to have to master the art of organization if they plan on making a game. That's why the KS devs were able to make their game.

>> No.7449131

>We can do better
>We

No, OP. That's not how it works. Don't try to blame your deficiencies and laziness on others. The proper question is, why haven't YOU made your own VN yet.

The board is just a place to discuss ideas, it's not some magical entity that creates things out of thin air. People make things. Individuals and their creativity and hard work. There's no "we". You don't get any credit for what someone else did just because he posts on the same imageboard as you. Conversely, we don't get any credit for what you did. If you are able and willing to, go ahead, create something. You can then share it with us, sure, why not, we should be like-minded people and some of us will certainly get interested in your work. But while you obviously shouldn't be an attention-whoring faggot about it, it will still be your work, not /jp/'s.

And if you can't be arsed to do anything, don't expect others to create something for you. Just don't.

...yeah, probably...but anarchy and autism are much more fun.
I give my vote for a totally unorganized and irrational dev team.
just think about it: someday one came up with a cool idea, and everything made before is trashed to make the new thing. how cool can this be?
...well maybe it's not cool. or maybe yes.

This is a big improvement over the old art. Looks much darker, too. Actually I'm kind of amazed that someone on /jp/ did this.
