That's because you don't understand Japanese.
All of it's vowels are monophthongs ('pure vowels').
This makes them really easy to translate into other languages, because they don't require specific mixing of sounds found with diphthongs.
Specifically, English has the monophthongs to match the Japanese sounds, it just uses diphthongs so often a native speaker forgets this.

However the r/l sound has never transitioned into English well. re: Reimu.

'You' as in 'Yo, what's hanging' and 'mu' as in 'move'.....

The only thing you've got to be careful of is the slight 'ghosting' of the 'u' on 'You' (which makes the difference between 'rice'/'dinner' and 'plywood' in spoken Japanese), but all that really is is holding the 'o' slightly longer.

You see, there's this thing called a penis.
And people like to whip them out and wave them around.
And that's what's going on here.

But, in all seriousness, it's a dialect difference. Although the language HAS the functionality, it's not always implemented.

Yeah, stick to the 'pure' vowel sounds (a= a in 'father', i= e in 'eat', u= oooh in 'oooh, shiny', e= e in 'eh', and o= o in 'ostrich') and you'll get pretty close.

Now, the consonants can throw you a bit, but they're manageable with practice.

No.
Latin, French(which is also derived from latin), Anglo-Saxon; that's what English is today.

Also most western languages are derived from latin.
