I plan on visiting Japan this summer. Few questions:
1. I plan on going there in Aug. which is around the same time of Comiket. It is worth going to? Do I have to register beforehand?
2. What "otaku" things should I do in Tokyo? I am open to just anything anything right now. I'll have about 4 days to do whatever.
3. Any suggestions for hotels in Tokyo?

If you're going to Big Sight for Comiket, then you might as well go to Akihabara. It's only about two hours by bike. Take the Harumi bridge. Just watch out for trucks.

But Akihabara's not really for moe otaku, but computer/electronics otaku. They also probably won't have any IBM 5100s, in case that's what you're looking for.

Definitely go to Comiket, especially days 2 and 3.
Unless you want the limited edition stuff, just walk in around 10~11am and you'll have enough time to look around everywhere. After comiket you'll still have the afternoon/evening to check out areas like shinjuku/ikebukuro (if you like anime, you can try to find anime locations and shit to make it more interesting).
Two spots I'd recommend as far as "otaku stuff" goes are Akiba (obviously) and Nakano Broadway.
It's always worth checking out the big stores along Chuo-doori, but for me the most interesting places are the Raido Kaikan (although I heard this is under construction, true?), the smaller shops a block west of chuo-doori, and the big Book Off. Check out White Canvas for touhou stuff and eat Kyushu Jangara ramen. Also, they have pedestrian paradise again right?
Nakano Broadway will have weirder, more wacky stuff, you get out the North exit at Nakano (chou line) and go until the end of the shoutengai, Mandarake and all the shops start at the 2nd floor I believe. Don't go too early, and might be better to go on a weekday since it seems to become a family place on weekends. You can buy more rare stuff there (or just check it out, since some things are auctions/require some japanese to figure out).
If you're into fujoshi stuff, go to Otome Road in Ikebukuro.

Check out the fetish maid cafes, I hear they have trap maid cafes, that should be your number 1 priority while you are in Japan

>> No.7434857

oh and no need to register or anything for comiket, might be a good idea to plan a big with the web catalogue though. Also if you plan on buying shit, take a messenger/shoulder bag, backpacks are a pain in the crowd. Be weary when taking photos, probably best to ask, the crew will give you shit for taking photos without permission and make you delete photos of the cosplay garden taken from the walkway above.
Also, take the yurikamome into odaiba rather than the rinkai line. rinkai is loud, expensive, and has no view.

when you are in akiba check out as much stuff OFF the main street (chuo doori) as possible. You can find plenty of neat shops (doujin & second hand) up small stair wells and in small nooks.

the arcades in akiba can be fun, but are generally more expensive then elsewhere. If I remember correctly the best arcade is on the top floor of this building

It's is the quietest/least busy and you get more plays per 100yen then most other arcades in akiba. You should definitely give jubeat a shot, was my fav arcade game.

I will be traveling to Japan with a couple friends, One Japanese, but has only gone to Tokyo because of family, so he's an expert for Tokyo navigation, but not much else., one Chinese friend whom has been to Japan twice, and has traveled across the north parts of Japan along the shinkansen. This time, I will be joining in and we will be traveling across the south eastern cities alongside the shinkansen.

I'm open to any suggestions whether it is otaku related, food related, history related, sight seeing related, or any known festivals. I know too little about the southern parts of Japan to suggest awesome locations.
Our timing window is Mid July to Mid August, so We will be hitting Comiket near the end, and hopefully the Mizuki Nana concert in July.

Japanese far-right movements are unlike their western counterparts in that they do not face any significant ideological resistance. The sentiments they appeal to (ideas of an ethnically homogenous state) are, by and large, accepted by a a large spectrum across Japanese society. Additionally, unlike the west (And especially Europe) there is little in the way of a historical stigma attached to these groups.

Ultimately, what seperates a member of one of these movements from the general populace of Japan is not any significant ideological difference, but the extent to which they are willing to actively voice these ideas or act on them outside of the ballot box. Japanese notions of citizenship and rights are still largely constructed on the racial, not the civic, level (NB Many nations within Europe are also constructed thus, but have been making moves to ammend this)

You're right, Japan isn't multicultural and doesn't seem to want to be. This has nothing to do with tourism though, and unless you want to move there they're not going to give a fuck.

>> No.7435642

Japanese racism is also directed heavily against tourists.

Also I fear you have misunderstood: many western countries (most notably France) do not pursue policies of multiculturalism (the belief is that anybody can become French through allegiance and adherence to the Republic) and yet opened themselves to significant immigrant populations. This has been problematic, but it has been problematic on a civic level much more than on an ethnic or racial one.

In contrast, Japan seeks neither a multicultural policy nor one of civic citizenship or immigration: the policy is no better thought out than 'no non-Japanese' outside of an outlying population of South Americans who are now busily being 'encouraged' to 'return home'.

I don't think I misunderstood, though I mightn't have worded it correctly. Most western countries at least tolerate mass immigration from culturally different countries. Japan doesn't. My understanding is that we agree on that, sorry if I'm mistaken.

I don't think that's a bad thing in and of itself, as multiple different cultures coexisting in the one society can cause problems, as I see in my own country. I don't know the specifics of any Japanese policy so I'll defer to you on whether it's thought out well or not.

As for racism directed towards tourists, I've been twice and never noticed anything like that - people were mostly friendly or uninterested. It's possible that it was just too subtle for me to see, but if that's the case then it's really not an issue for a tourist.

I'll address this question to myself, if that's okay.

It is possible through rigorous integration and acceptance of the values of the nation that an émigré from another country must adhere to. To me, it would make a lot more sense to integrate on the basis of family or for business advantages, not because "it's always been a dream of mine". Also, before you emigrate, check the diplomatic ties between the two nations so you won't be instantly detained or regarded as a traitor by both countries.

While I'm in this grumpy mood, what nation on this fucking planet considers gender as an obstacle to citizenship? Places like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan do not count on the basis of being even less accommodating to Westerners with killings and horror stories left and right that dwarf any kind of loudspeaker abuse you would encounter on an extended stay in Japan.

oh my gah

I can assure you'll regret it, i'm warning you.
Japan during August it's the hottest place i've ever been, and the humidity will kill you, assured. Maybe it's because i'm from Italy and the mediterranean climate is much more temperate, but i suffered a lot during those 2 weeks, even thou i enjoyed the trip, well i where still in Japan after all.

w/e warnings aside, i stayed last year from 8 August till 21 August, 8 days in Tokyo, 3 days in Kyoto then the last 2 days in Tokyo again, we moved a lot, and when i say a lot i mean it, by foot, we mostly got the subway just to reach far places then we moved mostly by foot to catch the most possible and "live" more the city, it was a lot hard to keep up 8hrs of walking under the sun but in the end we managed and saw a lot of stuff, we even got lost a lot, but that was the fun part of the trip.

For the stay i can recommend you the ryokan Edoya http://www.hoteledoya.com/ , it's between Ueno station and Akihabara, you can reach both by feet in 10minutes from the ryokan, the stay was wonderful, we choose the classic japanese room, it had everything (tatamis, futons, small tables) an anime fan would want from a japanese room. Also this was one of the only ryokans with a thermal spring on the top that the customers could user for free all afternoon and night. I'm seriously recommending it since the price was affordable, if you check-in on monday they'll let you pay less, read on their website.

Post part 2, i wrote too much.

Another tip i can give you is to request the Suica + Nex card when you get off the airplane, you just go down the escalator and go straight to the Suica stand, it costs 5k yen but they also give you 2 tickets for the bullet train from/to Narita, they expire after 2 weeks, AND a Suica card with 1500 yen, if you run around Tokyo with a Suica you'll pay less the subway, trains and other stuff, also is good to have it since you can use it to buy stuff from the dispensers around town.

For the Comiket plan... well i've been there, i wasn't planning, and me and my friend didn't plan the trip to visit it but we ended up there while following some japanese guy that we helped while walking in the ueno station.
I wouldn't say it was the worst experience in my life, but i was about to faint after 3 hrs of walking in that sea of people, the heat, the smell, i can't understand how they can manage to walk in cosplays in that heat and umidity, we managed to reach the top floors where the cosplayers show off but the sun was so freakin hot. I even run around it for 1hr just to search for a couple of doujins a friend requested me but i could only get one because for the others you had to get in line, but the lines started from outside, meh.

I don't think i'll ever visit it again during summer, but surely was something to do to "feel" the otaku side of japan. The only thing i'm regretting is that i missed all Miku stands to buy her discs, during that C78 a lot of great albums were released, but i "discovered" this otaku side of me only after buying her PSP game in Akiba, last summer they released Project Diva 2nd, her ads were everywhere so i felt like "woah, everyone is buying this game it must be great" so i bought it, and christ, i liked it so much that started listening to Miku songs.

I believe it was regarding the use of the term 'multiculturalism', although given how poorly this term has been defined I'm willing to just drop it here.

I would imagine this racism to take on more subtle forms, yes. Some of it may not even be intentional: work done into western societies qua the idea of 'white privilege' shows that a lot of discrimination doesn't really take place at the conscious level and can generally be missed. One also supposes it would depend upon where you went. More problematic for me is the seeming lack of any ideological resistance to these prejudices.

Comiket is pretty cool.

I went on Saturday and Sunday last year (C78), and there was an awesome fireworks display down by the Tokyo bay that evening, so I just hung around the place after Comiket ended.
They'll probably mention that on the speakers in the Big Sight, so you'll know if it's there or not.

The heat is the worst thing about Japan.
My being from relatively cool Scandinavia and staying in my room a lot doesn't really help my adjusting to temperatures.
So drink and eat a lot.
And for the love of everything sacred, bring something to wipe your sweaty face with - if you buy wipes from a convenience store, buy a couple of different kinds and test them before you bring them out in public.
I made a mistake of not doing that and spent a day getting even more weird looks than most white guys normally would because my stubble was full of white fluff from the shitty wipes I bought..

Just be polite and ask people if you can take pictures of them. It's common sense, really.

And it's probably one of the phrases I used the most. The "is it alright if I take pictures?".

On cameras:
When I went to a quiet lake temple in Kamikochi (上高地 - it's absolutely lovely there, nice cool and clean air) I heard a girl mention to her boyfriend that my camera didn't have a shutter sound.
I guess that isn't normal in Japan with all the weird stuff you could get away with by having a camera like that.

Westerners are much more extremist, and they take the whole racial "supremacist" bullshit to a whole new level. Sure, the government is lenient towards foreigners, but the government doesn't really represent the opinions of its citizens. Racial tensions are still lingering in the US despite what the media would like to make you think. Not to mention that there are several right-wing extremist political parties gaining popularity in Europe. Japanese aren't really racists, they're just xenophobic.

People seem to get a bit friendlier when they find out that you aren't completely illiterate.

But generally I didn't experience as much unfriendliness as I expected.
Some people made fun of me, but I guess it was my own fault most of the time.

Like when I wanted to get a sandwich from Subway, and I ordered one of the "base models". Then I was supposed to choose what to put in it, and the first 3 ingredients I mentioned were already in the base models.
The girls working there thought it was pretty funny.
Then I just told the one taking my order to put everything in it.

Depends a little. Some will throw a fit if you admit that you haven't been browsing the board for very long. But admitting that in the first place could just be seen as a failure to lurk and adapt, since it's very easy to avoid this by just lurking a little first and realizing that it's better to avoid doing this.

So yeah, I think most new people here who have decent judgment and think a little before posting in order to not make a fool out of themselves, aren't met with that much hostility. Personally I think these people are much better than "veterans" who let their egos get inflated by how long they've been here and no longer considers whether their posts are of acceptable quality. For instance, ZUN!bar.

I just asked him on Saturday about whether there was going to be different stuff the next day (I didn't know an awful lot about Comiket at the time), so we started talking about random stuff with my not-so-good Japanese.
At least I was easy to understand because of my pronunciation, and a lot of Japanese told me that actually.

We write an email to each other every now and then.

I was too shy to try and chat up a maid cosplayer who stood next to me and looked at the harbor area near the station even though she was standing there for a couple of minutes.
I think I looked more beat than her - mostly because of the white stuff from the wipes I bought.

I didn't talk to any foreigners during my entire 1-month stay in Japan apart from some loose conversation in a Kamikochi ryoukan and some guy in my Tokyo hotel with whom I discussed stuff to do without money (because my Visa limit was hit ($4000 in a 30-day period - which I used in 20 days..) and it took a day for my bank on the other side of the world to fix it).

Started out in Tokyo, then went to Kyoto and took day-trips from there to see Hikone (castle), temples a bit outside the city (Ohara, Fushimi Inari, etc.), Himeji (castle), and Osaka.
Then I went to the Nihon Travel Agency to get some help with getting into the countryside (because I'm not so fond of looking through all those websites if hotels and such), and there was a girl who got me a place in Takayama where I could spend 3 days and one of them went with taking the bus to Shirakawa (Hinamizawa).
Then I went to Kamikochi to get some mountain action, and that was really nice with the cool air and all.
Then I headed back to Tokyo where I went to Comiket and walked around town a whole lot to see museums and little shops in Ebisu and such.
