Saturday's Mano concert trip report:

They were fantastic, the only downside to me (aside from the heavy rain during the weekend, holy shit!) was that she did not perform Jasmine Tea. Otome no Inori was my favorite, her piano was brought out on a raised platform of sorts for the piano songs and during Otome no Inori "heavy smoke" was made to cover the stage which sort of gave a feeling as if her piano was floating or something like that, quite cool~

Her faster, more popish, songs were a lot of fun too; the extra long version of Genkimono de Ikou was nice. I have mixed feelings about splitting Seishun no Serenade and Sekai wa summer party into a medley. I guess it sort of makes sense to make room for full versions of less-often performed songs since both of those were played during every concert of the last winter and summer H!P tours respectively. There is a limit to how many songs the poor girls can perform in two hours after all.

I rather liked her "dance" for Dare ni mo iwanaide, which wasn't so much of a dance as it was interaction with the microphone stand. Slow, like the song, but cute.

Datenshi Eri was surprisingly well done, with original content during each concert (afternoon and evening). It was set up as a mini-play of sorts, including three tokusatsu style full bodysuit villains getting into a choreographed fistfight with Mano (seriously). There was also minor interaction with the audience during the challenges, which were similar in theme to those in the album version of the "song".

I did not get the impression that she had been prepared for the questions beforehand and she asked the audience to help her get the right answers. The only two I remember off hand were along these lines:

1. Something which hangs off of men, with the third letter being "ta". (Answer: Necktie (nekutai), not balls (kintama), she did not figure this one out.)
2. What is it that newborn babies "suck"? (Answer: Air, not tits, she did get this one right)

There was also a "spot the difference" challenge (two similar pictures with subtle differences) and she asked the audience to help her with those as well.

Another nice touch was that a little video clip (dubbed "The day of Mano" or something like that) was played on the big screen after she left the stage after the encore. The clip was set to Manopiano and included all sorts of footage which the staff had taken that day, such as during her rehearsal, footage from outside the venue before the concert started, backstage footage and finally some footage during the concert. Was quite impressed by how quickly the staff assembled the clip. They showed a different, more complete, clip after the evening concert (with timestamps of when the footage was recorded, as well as footage from the evening concert). The clips were quite cool and I hope they will be on the DVD.

My seats ended up being great too (row 3 and row 5), row 3 was front row since it was DVD day and I was pretty close to the center (25 is dead center, I was number 20 and 21 respectively). Bad thing is that this has really spoiled me and I'm not sure if I'll be able to enjoy future concerts as much while in the back.

During one song Mano threw some balls into the audience which had her sign on them. I didn't catch one but a friend did, and since he was there for the egg backdancers (lol) he gave it to me~ Will post a picture later.

All in all, fantastic concerts, probably the most fun I've had so far going to H!P related events.

I guess that's the thing, it takes knowing at least a bit of Japanese to really realize it, but yeah, I always had that image of them. Ever since Kanon first opened her mouth, she (and the rest too, I guess) are not just some shy little girls. They aren't even THAT young, so it's really not as special as maybe some of you are making it. AKB has had ero stuff surrounding their groups for a long time to, I think that's a big reason they just blew past H!P in the last few years. That said, my thoughts are entirely pure and so are my idols.

Groups like v-u-den or Romans were more "sexy" themed splinter groups, you wouldn't see minimoni making any innuendos, for instance. Everything in H!P has always been themed like that. Country, Coconuts, Sexy, Water, Air, Happy... I guess the main groups dabble in everything though. Kimagure Princess was about buttes.

No one can ever forget Onyanko's "Stop it, Teacher!". I remember I was so shocked when I heard the lyrics hah. I don't think you'd ever hear anything that overt in a Musume or H!P song either. Don't get me wrong, I -loooooove- Onyanko.

Well, Mini Moni was kind of a strange beast in that it was a subgroup of an idol group with an otherwise mostly male fanbase that was aimed at children. Most other groups in H!P have had some sort of sexual innuendo in their songs at one point or another though. As for Momusu, you know what Morning Coffee was about, right? Their debut single was blatant enough. Also, they've been doing the whole bikini photoshoot thing since at least five years before AKB48 appeared on the scene.

Anyway, regardless of specific lyrical content, it's pretty clear that the hardcore fanbase of most idol groups are quite similar to one another. We're mostly males in our 20s and 30s while our idols are mostly teenage girls. This shit would not fly outside of Japan. Those who can't see the blatant sexualisation of purity and innocence in a Berryz Koubou or AKB48 song, photobook, or PV probably can't speak the language. I would like to see a foreign fan of these groups attempt to defend something like BK's Special Generation, Momoclo's Kimi to Sekai, or s/mileage's fresh legs to their western workmates next time they have doubts as to the nature of the "pure and innocent" idol industry. We love idols because it's fun, we like cute things, and we just don't give a fuck. It's just weird and hypocritical when idol fans start attempting to take moral highground over each other because of things like bikinis and vague innuendo.

It's blatant and impossible to deny if you speak Japanese and understand the industry.
