Both are made by the same company and feature item crafting, but there are large differences in themes, tone and game mechanics between the two series.

The Ar tonelico games feature male protagonists, a hefty dose of VN elements, interesting (if not perfectly balanced) battle mechanics and very cool settings combined with amazing music.

To put it simply. Ar Tonelico are genuine Galges.
The other are RPGs with little girls crafting stuff.

Everythikng are about the girls in Ar Tonelico, and the protagonist's relationship with them. Routes, heroines, etc everything you would expect from any other Galge.
Bu the other is still fun as an RPG, but these games aren't set out to do the same thing.

You can easily clear AT2 within 30 hours if you hit it hard story wise and leave the shop events out.

I cleared it in 33 hours on my first run through in Japanese (understanding the bare minimum) and again in 35 hours on the English version with deliberately gimped party levels (Low level Cocona end, go!) and grabbing all shop events.

The HUUUGGGEEE time sinks are the cosmospheres and in AT2, the Infel Sphere. Infel Sphere especially can be 30min dialogue heavy portions during Phase 2 and 3.

>why the fuck is ar tonelico on vndb
Because 50-70% of the games' content are built like actual VNs, leaving the rest to only be heavily text based rpg gaming.

You might as well ask why Rance is on VNDB.
That, and how the structure is the same as that of typical galges, and how the games are genuine galges in every sense of the term.

Nefertiti is an insanely good boss theme especially with the intro. The battle itself was awesomely fun and Roxis earned his spot on my team a thousand times over with his card deleting skill.

The bonus dungeon pissed me off to no end because of those stupid 'lol, only crits do damage' enemies which made my Anna, who was normally a stupidly fast and heavy hitting powerhouse who could exploit any and all weaknesses a rather tame kitten because she wasn't geared towards crits. Every single piece of equipment I had on her was custom built to maximise traits and special skills and it would have been an absolute nightmare to recreate all the gear to add more crit.

... I feel like playing MK again and this time I'll make Anna a crit monster.

I'm four or five trophies from platinuming AT3.
The biggest pain in the ass is the 100 saves trophy. I have no idea how close/far I am from the target, but every time I save I get more and more hopeful that that'll be it.
Also the max money trophy might be a bit of a pain, but I'm sure there's an easy money exploit out there somewhere.

As for endings, I just got Tyria's normal end. It was... pretty underwhelming, especially considering how much I liked Saki and Finnel's normal ends.

That it does, its only real flaws is that the game is 8-10~ hours too long, heroines are terrible except the third reyvateil, the shops giving you recipe cards, and having to go through 3 cut scenes to buy anything. I haven't played the third one yet but I hope that these issues are addressed.
This game felt more like a chore than the first one, the first one pulled you into the setting more with its wider world and larger dungeons and had a plot that wasn't in your face all the time like in AT2.

>> No.7390489

I agree with this. The crafting system was very unpractical, even if it was quite entertaining at times. One of the main problems was that the game felt significantly more grindy than AT1 ever did, because of shop events and IPDs.

I mean, content is always good, but holy crap those god damn shop events never end, and you NEED some of them to unlock the later cosmospheres of at least the 3rd reyvateil.

Iris 1 is excellent. Fun but simple battle system, complex and rewarding alchemy system, fun interactions with shop staff, and I liked the MC. Also fourth-wall breaking comedy fairy for tutorials.

Iris 2 is decent. Rather simplified alchemy and no shop interactions, but slightly improved battle system. You play alternating between two worlds, but one has no battles and is really just the alchemy system kept separate from the rest of the game.

Iris 3 is merely okay. Even simpler alchemy, battle system is basically the same as 2's. Guild quest system instead of traditional plot system, limited time in dungeons for each visit.

So yeah, they went downhill after each iteration, but they're all worth playing. Definitely start with the first one though.

Also, there's no real continuity between them despite being the same subseries.

Do places even do that anymore? I remember about 10 years ago it was possible to rent a PS1/N64 from my local video/game rental store but when the 'next gen' PS2 etc. arrived they phased this out, probably because the prices were drastically raised and people ended up never returning them. Honestly I'd suggest just saving up a little and buying a used PS3 or something, there's so many RPGs being released on the PS3 soon that it really is worth it if you like them. Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia, Neptunia 2, Disgaea 4, Totori, Meruru, Agarest Zero, WKC 2, FF versus XIII.. I'm probably forgetting some but there's definately a good selection coming out. Then there's the already released titles which are great too like Valkyria Chronicles etc.

PS3 is completely region free. The content from the PSN store is region locked however so if you're playing a NA copy of the game on an EU console you'll need to make a NA PSN account and download the DLC from the American side. Not a big deal since it only takes 5 minutes to make a new account and buy a PSN card online but it's something to keep in mind if you do import and decide to download some DLC.

- Get Nisa and Gust as soon as possible. You first have to go to Lowee and do enough story quests until you see White Heart/Blanc. That will open up a series of events for both Nisa and Gust and seeing all four for each will gain them as allies. You'll have to do some world-hopping because there's 1 event for each of them. The order is:

Nisa: Lastation -> Planeptune -> Lowee -> Leanbox
Gust: Lowee -> Lastation -> Leanbox -> Planeptune

I forget their event names but I think they're somewhat obvious.

Nisa lets you see the worlds' "shares". I forget what exactly they do, but the important thing is that they affect whether the three console goddesses join you during endgame. You need all three goddesses as allies to get the best ending. As for Gust, she reduces the prices in the shop, which is very helpful.

Easy enough provided you get a PS3 under a certain firmware.
I think you have to be under 3.00 or 3.55 in order to install CFW? After that it's just installing a few files masked as a version update and you're good to go.
In other words, your best bet in getting a hackable PS3 is buying one used. Unfortunately, there's a lot of used PS3s on the market that are updated past 3.55 right now due to the whole PSN fiasco.
Good luck!

The shares decide when certain events appear... just.. Make sure Neptune does NOT die, preferably ever. also don't fail dungeons, but that is less bad, since you can still convert the "other" share into the different world shares.
The game btw, basically wants you to do planeptune -> Lastation -> Lowee -> Leanbox. in that order for the storyline events.

These games have annoying "schedule" oriented gameplay. Playing Persona is like playing one of those horribly tedious MMORPGs where you have to kill the same monster three hundred times, except replace "kill the monster" with "go to location x, talk to person y" (instead of grinding experience, you are grinding social skill or something). It'd be more entertaining if you just unplugged your monitor and stared blankly at it for six hours.

The mere mention of Neptunia makes me sad. First of all I missed the original release of it because I never had my PS3 in time (was waiting for AT3) and then the premium edition sold out. So then I wait weeks/months for NISA to restock it before finally getting a copy. I receive my copy and was anxious to play but the PSN was down so I couldn't make a PSN account and download the DLC for extra characters. No problem, I have other games to play. A month later and the PSN finally comes back up so I go to make an account and lo and behold the only name I've used online over the course of 11 years is taken for the first time ever. It's not horrible but it's not the best still. The localization kinda pisses me off, like "hafta" and "like that is so totally locked" in a tense situation just doesn't fit at all. Editing is piss poor in some areas too, places where a plain ol' spell checker would have caught errors. Besides that it still gets the point across.

Think there's a problem with Tyria's CS where dialog and text don't match up too.

I'd say it's the best of the three, for what that's worth, though I'd probably object to different things. "Hafta" is not so bad, since people kinda talk like that. 愛なのだ!!! (or something like that) -> THAT'S THE POWER OF LOVE, DICKNOSE!!!, not so much.

It's good if you don't mind that sort of random messing around with dialogue (which NISA have been doing forever and seems to be really common in games, sigh - they're no Working Designs, though). They don't do that *too* often, and leaving that aside there isn't a whole lot of blatantly mistranslated text. By no means stellar, but such is the fate of text-heavy games.

A couple of friends and I marathoned most of 2 and 3 this weekend. It was the first time I'd seen phases 2-4 of AT3 in English, and I remember seeing more typos than grammatical errors.

Yeah, it was just the first example that came to mind. It's been a few weeks since I played through the story since I'm waiting on the PSN Store to do another playthrough. There's many worse spots of localization than that, yes, but like I said it was the first to come to mind.

Best of the three... yeah that's not saying much considering how AT2 copped so much flak the localisation team had to spell out what they were going to do that was different and try to avoid the same screw up that AT2 had.

Let's hope NISA's foray into something a bit more mainstream (Bleach) would give them enough cash to have a bigger team.

Kind of. The basic layout is a 1 page description of the game followed by pages of illustrations and game CGs then it's followed up with pages showing illustrations and portraits of the characters from that specific game along with their bio information. At the end of the book is a short little section showing how the alchemy has changed throughout the course of the games then there's a section of interviews at the end. While there's no real spoilers of what happens in the story the CGs might show more than you want so it's up to you to decide if that's too much for you.

It was... rather pointless to level that high in Trinity Universe(admittedly, because the convert shop was so broken I don't even know why would they put like, 1000 different farmable items and make all of them conveniently available in stacks of 99), is there any dungeon that really requires it? Lyner's denseness is out of plot necessity, really- since the final choice of which girl you end up with is literally at the last minute, he kind of has to be oblivious to their advances otherwise you create the potential issue of Lyner saying he wants to be with Aurica or Misha forever and then turning around and dumping them for Shurelia. (in before >implying that's a bad thing)

Croix and Aoto aren't as bad in that respect precisely because 2 and 3 let you lock that shit in earlier and don't let you get brain-married to one girl but end up with another.

General rule is that characters who /a/ and /jp/ call sluts aren't actually sluts by any sane definition of the term. That's the whole joke.

Luca (an AT2 heroine) is a dive therapist, which is a profession that has a reputation among that world of being thinly-veiled prostitution (an image primarily promoted by the government because of their EVIL PLOT,) but Luca herself is not that kind of dive therapist. That plus the fact that her plot arc in the early game is basically her pretending to love Croix in order to use his connections as a knight to find out where her sister who was taken by the government as a child was, telling him the truth after finding out she's dead, then realizing that she had fallen in love with him for real gets her a decent amount of hate.

I'm sorry, but has Luca even engaged in sexual intercourse? Oh, that’s right. She hasn't even made contact with a man outside of dive therapy. In fact, it’s only therapy involving fields for soothing. Does not having a cliche tsundere personality make you a slut? Is that what you’re saying? Because if you’re saying that I can assure you that you’re wrong. Why would you make this topic when the game is already finished and we know for certain she is pure? Luca is a holy maiden now and she was been the purest maiden in Metafalss? Luca has to go up against one of the sluttiest reyvateil in the Ar Ciel who just happened to have a lead because she was praying on Croix's innocence. But you know what? Clooche is still a whore. Luca is the best heroine in all three games, she has the best character songs. Luca has already won Croix over, she would have done it sooner if it wasn't for her tragedy with her sister throwing her for a mental loop. Maybe you should shut the fuck up before you make retarded topics like this. You know why? Because you're going to be embarrassed when Luca is proven a better waifu that any other in AT2. Cloche tries to latch on to anyone who would have shown her a different and free life. Are you retarded? Are you autistic? You are a fucking idiot and you should never make a topic on this board again and I’m fucking serious. I almost have a feeling you’re the only guy making all these anti-Luca topics because you’re a faggot hater who doesn’t like a heroine because they’re canonically pure. Fuck you, be good at something in YOUR life and then maybe try to troll these fucking idiots on the board, like I give a fuck. It’s so easy to spot out your threads now, you’re a retard. Enjoy your first run through.

Seriously, just play a first run by yourself, at your own pace and don't worry about the ending you get. THEN hit up a guide for all the events and hammer out as many endings as you want in a single play through until your eyes bleed.

>> No.7431413

>>7431292

Getting the ends you want can be a bitch on your first playthrough. You can either:

A) Do what >>7431386 suggested, just do whatever you want at your own pace then try to go for specific endings on subsequent playthroughs. Makes first run less tedious and more fun, but requires more playthroughs (and/or reloadings during a subsequent playthrough depending on how you've managed your time) to see any of the endings you want.

B) Use a guide and try to get the exact endings you want with as few playthroughs as possible (1 or 2). Minimizes the playthroughs needed but it would cause the game to be more tedious, unless you like looking at the guide while playing.

Either way, in at least one of your playthroughs, try to hit True End + Astrid, since that is supposedly the Best Ending and the canon one.

There is no NG+ in AT1 or 2. Only in 3. It's made up for by the fact that 3 has one of the better NG+ systems around, though, letting you start from the beginning, the first set of ending-deciding decisions, or the second set of ending-deciding decisions.

And 1 and 2 are braindead easy so it's not like the ability to steamroll through the game with high-level characters does much for you anyway.

>> No.7431827

Just started playing AT3 some time ago.
And although I am almost certain this have been covered, more than once most likely even, I somehow refrain from checking the previous threads in fear of spoilers being all over the place.

But I don't really... understand the battle system of this one.
You have the reyvateils and that. But I barely really see how you matter, or how you are supposed to fight the reyvateils.
I mean, there is the sync thing... but in what way can you actually sync?
There are the occasional spikes, in which you are supposed to attack in order to do it. But the way fighting works... It is either *bam*, one hit, or *bam*, *bam*, *bam* all at once for three hits. And there is absolutely no rhythmto it. Its either one, and then you have to wait which makes you miss spikes possibly following directly afterwards, or, you have to attack three times fast in a row, making it too fast for the attacks to really be synched with any skill, and then you have to wait, making you miss the upcoming spikes...

I just got the impression that, either you go for hitting individual spikes, or you ignore them in order to actually try fighting properly. But I guess there is just something I am missing, but I am not sure.

>> No.7431849

>>7431827
A tip for hitting those spikes. It doesn't matter if your actual attack matches up with the spike. You only need to time your button press to it. I haven't played much, but that's what I've noticed. There were times I just timed the button presses and ran around to cancel the attack. I simply raise the synchro, strip reyvateil, use song magic.

Yeah, sometimes you'll get long periods of time with no red lines. That's just how it works, sometimes you can purge really fast and sometimes you have to wait a while.

Once you get access to supermoves you generally just use them on the red lines, they give more beat up per hit than normal attacks. Keep in mind that while you need to enter the command on the red line to get the beat up, the beat up (to my knowledge) doesn't actually register until the attack goes through (so you're not actually getting multiple beats by spamming attack while you're autorunning to attack a monster.)

>You have the reyvateils and that. But I barely really see how you matter,

Welcome to Ar Tonelico, you must be new here. The rule has always been that vanguards exist primarily to enable reyvateil damage and any damage they do outside of ultra flashy supermoves is a bonus. Your job as Aoto isn't to kill things, it's to protect the RT and press butan on the red lines so they can kill things for you.

And I realized how much the AT games have spoiled me in regards to random encounters. I keep looking at the bottom-right corner to see how many more random encounters I have to sift through, only to realize that this game doesn't roll like that.
It's a bit distressing.

Indeed, it's a really nice idea they use in the AT games. Nothing pisses me off more when you need to backtrack through older areas and are forced into fights constantly, it gets extremely annoying very easily even if you can one shot everything. No encounter items/equipment is fine too.

Clustania District is one level I can do without for the rest of my life.

I still have 5 endings to get, welp.

I've done it so many times I could probably run it blindfolded now.
I'm just missing Cocona end. Kinda sucks too because I was planning to separate my save where I was first able to solidify Tyria's route, but I fucked up and saved over both of them on two separate occasions.
I'm taking it slow for this last one, especially because I have a few other trophies left to get, and then I'm gonna make a perfect run save file for Finnel and Saki to compliment my Tyria file.
A lot of repeating for my own satisfaction.

I've seen so many people complaining about how complex that Clustania district map is. But when I played the japanese version, I'd already created a mental map of the area.. ( Ar tonelico could do with maps, btw )
I gotta say though.. I don't like the Cocona ending... It just feels really off, guess in my mind she belongs with Croix

Because she does, at least going by AT2's ending for her. Croix can go fuck off with someone else for all I care. As for the Clustania area I honestly thought it wasn't bad at all, the only real 'difficulty' to it would be the fact that your encounter bar resets and you're forced to run through it around 5 times in short succession which is rather irritating.

How the fuck could I typo Aoto for Croix? I really should refrain from posting the moment I wake up.

About how long does one AT3 playthrough take?

>> No.7440255 [DELETED]

>>7440247

Depends on how much time you spend in Cosmospheres finding talk topics and party topics, and random battles (which get pretty long and annoying in the late game). According to my first playthrough save before the last boss, Play Time was 056:15:10.

So if you're not remaining idle for extended periods of time (happened to me on occassion due to being called away or some other thing) and you don't spend most of the time in random fights, it should take you about 50 hours on your first run.

What's the relationship between the AT games? Are they direct sequels/prequels of each other? Do they happen in the same world (separated by thousands of years, perhaps?) Or are they just spiritual successors of the previous games just like how MK is to AI?

>> No.7441211

If memory serves, they're all pretty much in sequence... none of that skipping around shit, and they all basically happen in the same world.

They're, while direct sequels, not exactly related one to another. There are some cameos and returning characters, but that's about it.

They do share the same world, terminology and style, though.

I think it was possibly something like.
AT1->AT2: Century.
AT2->AT3: Decade.

Anyone have the pictures of the three towers though?

AT2 is like 1.5 to 2 years after AT1. The AT1 heroines make an appearance in the Binary Field, and Misha and Aurica not only are still alive but don't look much different than they originally did.

>> No.7441926

Also, AT3 is 2 1/2 years after AT2. Otherwise Cocona and Sasha would be 21 instead of 13. Not to mention some other things that would be kinda spoilerly if I said more.

I'm playing Ar Tonelico 2 and I'm confused as fuck by the combat.

Can someone please explain how pressing the D-Pad and attacking and how the harmonics work?

>> No.7442768

>>7442624

Up = harmonics. Enables stronger attacks once you're high enough level to get them.
Left = burst. Increases the burst gauge which determines song magic damage/healing.
Down=sync. Synchronizes the two Reyvateils together. At max sync combo magic is activated. You will probably not see this happen until mid to late game.
Right=care. Restores MP.

Increases to harmonics, burst, and sync happen when the respective corner of the polygon lights up, and can't be increased further in that attack phase past that point.

So the tl;dr is that you use up attacks until the thing fills out, then left attacks until that fills out, then down attacks to max, then whatever you want.

>> No.7442781

>>7442624

Pressing the D pad affects what attack you do and how your gauge changes on the bottom right. Holding left will increase your burst %, holding up will increase harmonics (faster burst speed, allows syncro chains between reyvateils when you unlock it, unlocks your level 2-3-EX attacks), holding down will increase.. something, I forget the name but the more you do it the less burst % you will lose when your reyvateils take damage. Right will restore some MP to your reyvateil.

>>7441603

I prefer what AT2 done though, personally. Same universe, you as the player know that shit has gone down on another tower but the characters don't have a clue. It's nice to see the plot slowly come together as they've all indirectly worked to save the planet together.
