There are no "swear words" In Japanese. You either say a variation of "baka/aho" or get creative with your insults.

How do you define "swear words?"

There are plenty of words which are simply not appropriate in most contexts and are not really deemed appropriate for children to use. For example, I would say just like "bitch," "mesu"(usually coupled with another insult) is considered fairly inappropriate outside of formal use.

There's no religious basis to it like there is in the West, but they have their share of words which are considered inappropriate or offensive.

I define them as words that are considered rude/taboo no matter the context in a culture. Fuck, Shit, bitch, etc.. are never or very rarely appropriate. Baka, kuso, mesu(just "female" for animals"), etc... have totally legitimate normal uses that are commonplace outside of insults.

I wouldn't say that Japanese really has an equivalent of "fuck." Kuso is slightly more acceptable than shit but still not really usable outside of friendly/humorous contexts(I would say shit is given the same treatment these days).

I'd say that Japan's version of swear words more or less comes from compound words. I don't think you can really argue that words like "kusottare" or "kichigai" are usable in any kind of formal context whatsoever.　Kichigai is quite literally given swear word treatment on television, I'm not sure if you know or not but it's a banned word.

Swear words definitely don't translate between Japan and English and there are many phrases which they don't really have equivalents for, but if you're going to argue that Japan doesn't have socially unacceptable words(keep in mind I'm excluding friendly/humorous contexts, as swear words are commonly considered acceptable in English in those contexts as well) then I suppose we have nothing to discuss. At the very least, "kichigai" is a word that fits your definition, from my experiences/knowledgebase. It's a word that you can only use acceptable in the same contexts that you can use "fuck"(i.e. talking to someone you're enemies with or joking with a friend) although its meaning is completely different.

Well, nobody really cares about the meaning of 'fuck'. Sometimes, it's even used without a context, simply as an interjection.

There are other words though that aren't appropriate outside of TV , such as kisama and temme.
