Sure, it's like watching a series of nightmares of a girl who has likely had severe and traumatic events happen to her at sometime in her earlier life, but it's hardly nightmare-inducing.
In fact, after playing Yume Nikki, I've started hoping my dreams would someday turn out like the ones in it.

We don't really know. Can dreams be called nightmares if the dreamer is enjoying them? I don't believe so. A nightmare is something that induces fear and terror in a person, and through playing Yume Nikki, you never really understand Madotsuki's opinion on her dream worlds.
For all we know, she could actually be honestly enjoying herself as she plunges deeper and deeper into her warped mind.

I think they must be nightmares. At least some of them, especially the ones where you have to pinch your cheek to escape, like the birdsluts and the closed rooms, have to be. That is to say, there are other parts that are mildly pleasant, but I don't think she really enjoys it.

Maybe it just depends on your take on the game itself. Madotsuki is something of a blank canvas, after all, so your opinion on the dream worlds would probably reflect onto her.
I never once saw the dream worlds in a scary way. Creepy, sure, and several of them had a sinister undertone, but that sort of image only served to increase my curiousity and interest in the dreams. The more horrific and dark the dreams were, the more I wanted to explore them.
And it's not like it's impossible to escape the "cells" the Toriningen drop you into. One of the effects throws you back to the central hub. However, on the psychological side of it, it could be that she feels she can't escape the walls her psyche has built up around her, so she escapes the only way she knows how to-pinching her cheek.
That said, I'm pulling straws here.

Yume2kki is better than Yume Nikki in several ways, it plays more like a game. Some may think it tries a bit too hard at some parts, but I'll be damned if this game isnt scary as shit.
