Well, he's not black, but he fought in the Civil War for the North out of a pretty pure desire to bring liberty to the slaves- Joshua Chamberlain. Probably the greatest hero of the Civil War, and one of the greatest American heroes period. The man took 50 years to die of the wounds he suffered during the Civil War (he was wounded 6 times during the war), during which time he was elected Governor of Maine 4 times, taught virtually every subject at his alma mater Bowdoin College, received the Medal of Honor, and on, and on.

This man would be a pretty damn awesome Heroic Spirit. Summoning the 20th Maine and charging the enemy for the sake of freedom, ignoring his wounds, surviving by the luckiest chances ever.

Studies of his medical records show that he actually died from lingering complications from his wounds, making him the last Civil War vet to die from injuries suffered in the war. When he was wounded at Petersburg, which is the wound that eventually killed him, he wasn't expected to survive, but instead he just shrugged off the wound, got up, and went on to be the officer given the task of receiving the South's surrender.

Man was the fucking boss. The movie Gettysburg only shows the tip of the iceberg on this guy.
