It is mainstream, and I love the official games and some musical arranges. Sadly, most of the fandom is retarded and most people associate Touhou with "CHIRN9 IS ZE STR9NGEST L9L XD S9 HYPE".

Speaking of Zun... I might as well use this thread to know about this but... how does ZUN capitalize (if he ever does) Touhou money-wise?... I mean there's the direct profit from the Games themselves... maybe a bit of royalty from a couple of big merchandise like Touhou action figures and other related toys and trinkets but what else?... can anyone shed some light to this?... Also, was Touhou his full time job or just a hobby that went wild...

Reality check: Touhou is only popular amongst otakus in the east and severe otakus in the west, both of whom are members of their own respective counter-cultures, hence NOT mainstream.

Also, the very fact that ZUN has not, does not, and will not market to the West means that there will never be a true Western consumer base. If you would get your head out of the illusion that the majority of people in the world, unlike us, have lives, then I wouldn't have to say this

Are you sure about that? I remember watching a documentary and there were quite a few normal people, as you call them, that played and enjoyed the Touhou games. Not to the extent that people over here play Farmville or Call of Duty, but it's not a small niche.

Reality Check: South America is also part of the west, 9/10 spanish-speaking japan/videogame forums will have members fapping to Touhous and arguing, primaries or not.

When I was still in uni I would see AZN kids playing Touhou on their laptops practically everywhere. I think it's fairly mainstream.
