If Touhou was mainstream, would you still play it?

I thought maintream standed for a very popular thing irl, I don't think touhou is that popular outside of a few internet communities.

>> No.7151129

It is mainstream, and I love the official games and some musical arranges. Sadly, most of the fandom is retarded and most people associate Touhou with "CHIRN9 IS ZE STR9NGEST L9L XD S9 HYPE".

Go fucking kill yourself.

I don't let popularity affect what I like. What's the point in it?

They would play it "ironically" and then make thread after thread complaining about how shit it is, like they do for Tsukihime, FSN and Umineko.

>> No.7151152

Yes. I think it would make it harder finding quality fanart though.

Reitaisai, a convention solely for Touhou. Touhou's popular as fuck in Japan, at least along the otakus.

>> No.7151166

It's not a question of popularity. It's a question of how far ZUN sells out.

That's what really turns people off, when you see shitty commercials and people who don't give a fuck promoting it because they want money.

>> No.7151174

I'll be deleting all of my Touhou fap material the minute it becomes mainstream

>he thinks Touhou isn't mainstream

protip: touhou has long been popular amongst the Gaia (etc) crowd. they basically talk about it in the same with that /jp/ does (WHICH TOUHOU WOULD YOU X AND Y), except with more faggotry and emoticons and slightly less bleach drinking

you are now aware that /jp/ is Shrine Maiden without emotes

>> No.7151179

Touhou isn't exactly mainstream. You couldn't have a conversation with the part-time cashier at GameStop about it.
If it was mainstream, I would still play it, I just wouldn't tell anyone.

>> No.7151181

Speaking of Zun... I might as well use this thread to know about this but... how does ZUN capitalize (if he ever does) Touhou money-wise?... I mean there's the direct profit from the Games themselves... maybe a bit of royalty from a couple of big merchandise like Touhou action figures and other related toys and trinkets but what else?... can anyone shed some light to this?... Also, was Touhou his full time job or just a hobby that went wild...

>ITT: Idiots who think touhou is mainstream

Reality check: Touhou is only popular amongst otakus in the east and severe otakus in the west, both of whom are members of their own respective counter-cultures, hence NOT mainstream.

Also, the very fact that ZUN has not, does not, and will not market to the West means that there will never be a true Western consumer base. If you would get your head out of the illusion that the majority of people in the world, unlike us, have lives, then I wouldn't have to say this

Are you sure about that? I remember watching a documentary and there were quite a few normal people, as you call them, that played and enjoyed the Touhou games. Not to the extent that people over here play Farmville or Call of Duty, but it's not a small niche.

A hobby. He used to work for Taito, now (acocrding to his blog) he has a new job but hasn't stated what it is.

I don't think you can pick a random perso in the street, ask him/her about touhou and he/she'll know about it.
Touhou isn't mainstream outside of japan, not that it matters anyway since no one except retards enjoy something dependin on how popular it is.

Yes. This. And nothing else.

>Most of the people in the west don't know it therefore it's not mainstream.

Reality Check: South America is also part of the west, 9/10 spanish-speaking japan/videogame forums will have members fapping to Touhous and arguing, primaries or not.

>> No.7151355

When I was still in uni I would see AZN kids playing Touhou on their laptops practically everywhere. I think it's fairly mainstream.

That's.... Sadly truth. I try to stay away from them as much as I can though. I know I'll always have my /jp/ at the end of the day anyways
