The first time you play Touhou, you play it like Space Invaders. You move back and forth frantically. You die a lot.

Then you realize that you can move up and down, too. You complete EASY MODO.

Then you come to understand streaming. If the bullets are aimed at you, you don't move frantically; you move slowly to one side in a very cautious, streamlined manner. You complete NORMAL MODO.

Then one day you realize that you can see the spaces between the bullets instead of the bullets themselves. You feel like Neo as he saw the truth behind the Matrix. You complete HARD MODO.

Finally, you realize that Touhou is not a two-dimensional game; it has a third dimension: time. As your mind thinks in all three dimensions at once, transferring the Z axis of normal experience to a Z axis of time, you finally realize how to be in the right place at the right time to beat the hardest of spell cards. You complete LUNATIC MODO. You have reached Touhou Zen.

I'm not very good either. I once beat PCB on easy (or was it MS?). PoDD on normal several times, and I once beat LLS on normal.

I think I can beat another one soon. I'll try PCB normal. It'll take several days of 8 hour/day playing.

I understand all these things, but I am too stubborn about using bombs because it feels as bad as losing a life.

I can't imagine using almost 50 bombs even if it means I "win" (1CC) so I guess my progress is going to be slower. I probably use 3 or 4 bombs a game.

Should I be less stubborn or will bombs help me beat the game but ultimately lose in the long run?

Even the experts use lots of bombs; you have to get the instinct to know when to bomb. Even if you're a very good player, you will run into many cases on higher difficulty levels where you simply can't get out. No good Touhou player ever wants to die with bombs.

If you get good at grazing but still don't have the "bombing instinct," you won't do nearly as well as someone who does. Unless you're playing Imperishable Night, of course.
