we are all going to die. The energy from the massive explosion will cause a massive rift in the void that will begin gathering all the gravity of the earth at which point we will collapse into the shattered night world. Where a massive implosion will occur blasting into the 24th dimension where we will be greeted by arch-angel Xanaphyus with a quest. To receive the crystals of balance powering the universe. The part destroyed looks like the metal shroud at the top, whereas the actual containment is a concrete underneath structure underneath. If the explosion was from detonation of hydrogen gas that seeped upwards from the hot zirconium cladded fuel rods, then there's possibility that the containment isn't completely destroyed, hence hopefully most of the radiation will be contained.

The cladding covering the uranium pellets will burn off. Pellets will drop to bottom of thick steel container that encases the reactor. Nothing goes kaboom because the pellets simply can't achieve critical mass. Greenpeace will still scream ZOMG ZERNOBLYOFF for the next twenty years.

OR
the nuclear material becomes wedged in place because the control rods were dropped into superheated water and shattered. operators keep pumping in water & a positive feedback loop forms due to steam cavitation. the coolant system starts exploding because it cannot vent steam fast enough. pressure drops and the core overheats & melts downward tunneling into the earth.

Yukari is spearheading an invasion of the Earth the manner of her earlier invasion of the Moon.

All of Gensokyo's strongest youkai will surge forth to conquer the Earth. At a (super) critical moment, Yukari will withdraw her support, leading to the youkai forces being completely annihilated.

The end result are that:
1.) Human power is set back hundreds of years
2.) Gensokyo is reestablished as the only safe haven for youkai
3.) Every youkai of with power and ambition who might possibly rival Yukari is destroyed

The border between the puppeteer and the puppets widen, and everyone knows who holds the strings.

Western style reactors (which Japan uses), uses WATER as a moderator, which makes a nuclear disaster of any real scale impossible. Russian reactors used Liquid Sodium as a moderator, which made the whole system significantly more unstable, allowing it to keep going without human assistance. Water moderated reactors, in the absence of human maintance, just shut down. This issue is less dangerous then fires still burning in some parts of the country, the media just likes harping on it cause nuclear reactors are a nice, big fear button they can push.

I keep repeating this endlessly. The 'explosion' was from a catastrophic build-up of water pressure, which with this types of reactors are pretty much the worst case scenario. I'll repeat that. Worst Case Scenario already passed us by, now it's all just cleaned and minimizing radiation exposure.

Sure, we got run over by a lot of herp derp people from other boards last night, but the sticky never totally derailed, at least I never saw it happen.

I just want to say thank you /jp/, I'm sure people won't agree, but I think the disaster was handled nicely by our locals. Nearly all information I got out of /jp/ was trustworthy, and I moved by the genuine interest and worry many showed.

To armchair nuclear physicists of /jp/: Are these fuel rods so hot when not in the reactor? It was my understanding from before that you had to shoot particles at the fuel rods to get a reaction to get heat to steam water etc. so if particles aren't being shot at them why the increasing heat? Sorry if this is retarded question or all that info is wrong, just curious.

Even after the control rods are lowered, there's still residual reactions that finish occuring. After that, you have all the built up heat that needs to decay. The problem at the one plant is that the generators failed shortly after the rods were lowered, so they had no real way to continue removing that heat. At the moment they're gonna be flying in sea water to help cool it off. Bear in mind they normally spend days after 'shutdown' cooling this shit so they can ACTUALLY shut down the reactor.

>> No.7083905

>>7083894
The particles (neutrons) have already been shot at the rods, making the rods essentialy one big radioactive isotope.

You cannot simply shut off radioactivity, it will emit extreme radiation until it vanishes.

Yes, you have to shot at the material first, but after that it will react by it's own, since it produces the shots by itself. That's why there is a moderator material in the reactor to control the multiplicator to keep the amount of reactions stable.

tl;dr: It's an exothermic reaction.

At this point the reactor's shot anyway, and I believe it was scheduled for decommissioning in a few years either way. My guess is they're worried first and foremost about cooling shit down to prevent any more major issues and then they'll do what they need to to get it cleaned up, especially since 3 guys already have confirmed radiation sickness that worked around it recently. They've distributed Iodine to the citizens that were around the reactor too and whatnot so yeah, it's not a cakewalk at this point but it could still be way way worse.

That has to be the most retarded image I've seen on the internet all week... Unless something is powering the fallout to move crosswise to the jetstream, it's not going to do that shit. also, the image is predicting a reactive meltdown, which is impossible now that the plant has fully shut down.

Though frankly, the pic is made by luddite activists in Australia who are trolling Americans into following their cause. Retardation is to be expected.

The little earthquake I felt in 2008 in Japan was a very very small one. I didn't even get it until it started shaking full on (first thing I noticed was my screen shaking slightly)...
And when it started it was just fucking awful.
It moved quite gently (I think it was 2 on the japanese scale) ... the scary part was that only weeks before, I had learned that for big earthquakes there is a small quake beforehand with an intensity of 2 or 3 and then it suddenly goes up to 6 or 7...
So I was sitting on the chair in my Hotels lobby hoping it will NOT start shaking like mad.
