EoSD Manual
>She lives in her shrine and is rarely visited by anyone
Wow, so loved. Fanon of course generally rejects this, as her shrine is visited by everyone everyday.
PCB Manual
>She hates training, and because of this, lacks ability. So her skill is quite so-so.
>She hates to do her very best at anything that falls upon her.
>That is because she does not believe that effort will be rewarded.
This is why I don't like Reimu.
IaMP
>She lacks training in both melee and spells (or rather, she rarely does them), but she covers that up with the numerous talents she's born with.
She's not strong because she works hard; she just inherits power. Contrast that to my favorite character.

Someone who needs to run as hard as they can just to keep up with everyone around them is far more interesting. They're more likely to have obstacles they need to overcome with the abilities they've worked towards rather than THE POWER IS INSIDE YOUR ASS ICHIGO.

You can easily interpret that to mean they appreciate Reimu's presence. Youkai in general can be mildly annoying to outright terrifying, so Reimu dealing with them when they hit the 'terrifying' portions gives the village(s) a good opinion of her.

But then, the youkai are constantly (at least for them) visiting her shrine. So it's logical she wouldn't get many humans visiting or donations.

On top of that, she's lazy.

Agreed that it is quite a privilege to learn under Mima, but I refute that it's the same as being born with powers.
Let's try a real-world example.
Paris Hilton inherited the Hilton fortune. From her birth, it was decided that she would be rich. It's quite clear that she doesn't care much for being a positive contribution to human civilization.
Take into consideration then anyone not born into wealth. They studied hard under good teachers. After their teacher departs, they continue to work hard every day, amassing more books than they can crack open and read. They have to be pretty ruthless to keep up with competing businesses, but in the end they amass a respectable amount of wealth.
Not that these are very accurate to the characters (Reimu=/=Paris Hilton), but you wouldn't hold them in the same esteem would you? The same interest as characters? Which has a more interesting story?

You're correct. Let me try to explain that in a more expanded way.
When you try to tell a story, you want your audience to engage with your characters. You want your audience to hope your character succeeds when obstacles appear.
So let's try this:
Obstacle:
>A powerful fate-manipulating vampire is creating a minor nuisance. Dragged into the situation, Reimu encounters the vampire.
Under these conditions:
>Reimu was born with the power to exterminate extremely powerful youkai
>Reimu doesn't try hard at what she's doing
>Reimu doesn't really care about what she's doing
What is my motivation for hoping she succeeds? What in her character appeals to me that I might care about her? Really, nothing. If she wins, good for her--that's the power of the Hakurei miko. She was more or less destined to win (ha, Remilia) because she had that power to begin with. The battle was decided before it started. That's pretty boring.

Except the fact is that the fans do care about the characters, and one of the means by which we are able to establish just what kind of person they are is by the (admittedly, minimal) context clues given in-game and the descriptions handed out from ZUN. >Ultimately it is up to fans, but that's where we get a lot of our ideas and context.
Personally, I prefer to discard any ideas and character stories and personalities not created by ZUN himself. most fanworks to me always come off as the fan artist attempting to shove their interpretation of a character onto everyone. Sometimes they have a clear conflict with the original standing of the character.

A clear example would be how IOSYS presented Shikieiki in one of their videos. The attitude conflicts tremendously with the actual character, both in game and with what ZUN himself has said of the character.

But yes, most of the time it does end up that way, for good or bad. The best I can hope for is that they do not get too carried away, or that they at least use the canon as a heavy base.

Alright since you pathetic little whiny "someone doesn't like my waifu" bitches can't understand this, let's get down to brass tacks.
>The characters are THE means of conveying the game, not the other way around.
Holy shit, it's almost like they're interrelated. A story can't be told without characters, and a story conveys characters. Breaking new fucking ground here.
>ZUN said he wrote the backstories (i.e. the manual) to prepare players for the danmaku ahead.
Ever opened a classic video game before? Let's talk about Zelda, eh? You open the fucking cartridge box and what do you get? Hey what's this flappy little booklet? Oh cool it tells me about Link, Zelda, Gannon, and Hyrule. Oh okay, cool. Now I'm ready to start the fucking game. How novel!
Of course he did. But you don't experience Hyrule from the manual. You gain some beginning knowledge and context from it. It helps define your starting image when you begin playing. The way you start to really identify with a character is through the game itself, both with story and by the character (you) struggling through obstacles (danmaku-spewing fairies and youkai).
The game and story contained absolutely conveys character. To believe that it is a hollow vessel carried by pre-defined characters is utter stupidity and fails to refute any point I've offered in this thread.

Well, ZUN created the characters entirely, I do not mind if someone adds a little bit to the character, as interpretation of what is already canon can be seen in a few different ways. But if you're going to bastardize the entire character, you could just make up your own character instead of trying to change one that someone else already created.

What I'm trying to say is, it is ZUN's characters, so what he says does go. If you want your own interpretation of a character, go make up your own and stop trying to change what he made.

People enjoy reading more stories with characters they know and are attached to.
The artists on the other hand get popular characters with pre-established personalities that they can put into their own works.
Even shitty plotless porn can leverage the reader's emotional bonds to the characters.
It's a win-win.

And a lot of Touhou fans play Scarlet Weather Rhapsody but not Vanguard Princess. People who are fans of the Touhou universe tend to enjoy media that has Touhous in it. I don't see what's so terrible about this.

I'd find Touhou fans less irritable if they weren't so anal over what they seem to consider as "canon" fanon.

Even imply that a character doesn't line up to their supposed true personality and people flip their shit. Then again, I hate just about every touhou fan on /jp/, since they're secondary scum.

I left this thread 8 hours ago. Give it up, Mikofags, you're fighting thin air.
Apparently, according to >>7031345 boredom, nonchalance, and disappointment are all moe qualities. Whodathunkit.
Keep licking armpits. Its your... um... right as fanboys. Your miko will be in every game, doing her thing, and as long as you're addicted to that wonderful bored-yet-special-just-because quality about her, you'll be happy.
I still don't like her, and have no reason to like her. I'll be playing the other characters in Ten Desires. What a crime.

You're the one that started the whole scandal when all anyone did was ask your reasons and you took it as some kind of attack. People don't give a damn about the preferences of other anons so stop thinking you're privileged or something.

Obviously not everyone will like the same character but you keep thinking people want to force it otherwise.

Seems like he just can't accept any character that's not a genkishit haruhi clone.

No worries, he'll grow out of liking a single archetype like most do.

Its like arguing with a wall, when talking to that guy. He hates Reimu because she inherited her powers.
I'm mean I don't care if her hates her but the reason he has is just so fucking stupid. That's like me saying I don't like Marisa because she a thief or because she steals spells.
Anyway hope we can have some good Reimu threads in the future without this faggot butting in with his nonsense.

>thinking it was some kind of attack
I was not, contrary to popular opinion, upset that someone disagreed with me or questioned why I would dislike Reimu. I'm posting in a "we like Reimu" thread anyway. But I can certainly see why seeing things as an attack would be unreasonable:
>Marisa is shit.
>Also get that powerlevel hogwash out of /jp/
>Get back to Naruto dammit.
>Who lets you idiots post anyhow, there should be some kind of QA before any post on /jp/ is posted on the server for the public eye.
>The only thing I'm getting from you is vibes saying 'BAAW MY HORRIBLE TOMBOY CHARACTERS IS NOT LIKED AS MUCH AS THAT SHITTY SHRINE MAIDEN HOW DARE SHE BE TALENTED'
>Get over yourself.
You know, the usual, placid even-minded queries that I was totally unreasonable about. Y'know with my "I see why you think that, but here's why I don't like Reimu with evidence from ZUN's manuals..." That shit doesn't belong here.
>>7032340
>Implying Marisa is the only character/character type I like. My dislike of Reimu is not Marisa-based, contrary to what you've apparently thought for the past 9 hours.

>> No.7032416

Don't play dumb, as soon as someone asked you inmediately acted like it was a threat to your preferences. Also this was just a Gensokyo debate thread until you came in, stating your opinion wouldn't make you a public even in a Reimu praise thread anyway.

>> No.7032441

Please stop talking like a pompous classy schmuck wannabe, /jp/ doesn't like that kind of people, regardless of their opinion.

>> No.7032441,1 [INTERNAL]

This thread is remarkably shitty.

Oh, /jp/, whatever are we to do with you?
