I'd like to get into Touhou, but I'm a little overwhelmed by the vast amount of material.

Which game is a solid entry point for someone whose most played top-down shootan game was the old Raiden series?

Most people's first touhou.

>> No.7027159

I usually recommend you start with Perfect Cherry Blossom to get a feel for it. If you're used to shmups, go to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, or Mountain of Faith.

If you're good, start with Subterranean Animism.

Perfect Cherry Blossom or Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil
Avoid IN at all costs at first

>> No.7027167

>>7027145
We'll see how newcomer friendly it is

I'd suggest Imperishable Night, it has spellcard practice and seemingly easier generaly patterns, least for the first half.

Perfect Cherry Blossom is a more roundedly easy gama from what I've heard (can't say i completely agree).

...or you could dive in head-first and try Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, though don't do easy, since you dont even get to play all the way through it

>> No.7027175

People say Perfect Cherry Blossom, but I never found it particularly easy. I'd personally recommend Mountain of Faith, it's certainly easiest on the eyes and it has some catchy music as well.

Or you could do what I did and just download all of them and switch to another when you feel your ass is getting kicked too much.

Makes sense from the list, as the other six(?) before seem to be made PC-98. So chronological release order it is then. Thanks brosef.

He's not annoying, he's just new. He just assumed that the verbal quirks particular to discussions on /v/ would be received similarly here.

Hey, OP, if you're still around, /jp/ makes a big thing about not being /a/, not being /v/, not being /b/, and not being weeaboos. It's a slow board and it tries fiercely to maintain an independent character.

Unfortunately, board identities are a fact of life. You won't get a very warm reception if you don't adjust to the style of posting expected on another board. I mean, you clearly post on /v/. Think about how much /v/ hates /b/.

That's the spirit. There's no point in feeding petty conflicts when we would all rather be doing things we enjoy.

Here's the link for Mountain of Faith, at least I think it is. It may not be translated, so I recommend you hunt down the English patch if it isn't. It may be a shooting game, but it makes it a lot friendlier to be able to read the dialogue.

OP, here's a list of the translated Touhou games and their accompanying English patches. You can then just enter their names into /rs/ and grab the first link to get the games themselves

If you want to play the PC98 games, bare in mind that apparently 3-5 are not translated, only 1-2. With 3-5, you have to go look up the translated scripts hosted on the wiki

As for actually playing them, personally I use T98-Next to do that. Anex86 is an alternative, but frankly, it's rather inferior

I tried to start 1CCing the games starting from EoSD onward, but after deciding to start from Highly Responsive to Prayers onwards, I've gained a huge appreciation for the PC98 games. Don't be put off just because they're old! They've got excellent music, and graphically, I for one have been impressed with Story of Eastern Wonderland. ZUN really knows how to build atmosphere, even with limited technology
